Interviewer: So, why “In my blood” for the first track of the record?
Shawn Mendes: Uhmm, I guess when you listen to a record, usually what happens is that there’s one, when you listen
to them all and you’re like “Oh, that’s obvious! That’s the single!” And for me, when I was listening to the record it was
really hard to tell what… there were a few that I really (you know) that I really felt strongly about… but “In my blood” had
this other extra layer which was with the concept of what it was about… Uhmm… You know, to overcome fears of
anxiety and… as a songwriter and as a person that was the most I’ve ever put into a record… So that was the thing…
And that I was definitely really scared because this is not… had nothing like I have done in the past, you know?
Interviewer: Right, so how are you doing with that right now?
Shawn Mendes: Good! I mean… I think that thing about anxiety is that it comes in phases and it’s different for
everybody and in the moment when I was having it I wrote a song about it and I’m great right now but I mean I’m really…
I’m super proud of that record.
Interviewer: What was the moment that you knew things were going to be different for you?
Shawn Mendes: Yeah! When I came down to Toronto and there was this meet up for the Viner’s, I remember we’re
going to the square and not really knowing what was going to happen but then… It’s the difference… When you see
three hundred thousand as a number and then you’re like “Wow, that’s amazing!” but you see three hundred people in
person chasing you that is a different feeling.
Interviewer (laughing): Yeah! (…) I know that in the past you said that you want to create more than just music that goes
away after a couple of months… You wanted to last and you wanted to make a difference. What do you mean by that?
Shawn Mendes: Yeah! I want to create stuff that breaks the boundaries of time and…
Interviewer: Oh, like it will be…
Shawn Mendes: Timeless. To create timeless music that affects people today the same as it would affect people twenty
to fifty years from now. Uhm, and at the same time, I’d also, I’m not just thinking on how to create music, I also want to
make a difference in the world, and I want to help and I want to, you know… use my voice and use music to take steps
forward and help people take steps forward.
