Scientists Discover New “Cryptic”

Species of Leaf-Tailed Gecko

By UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN

A global team of scientists has identified and named a new species of

leaf-tailed gecko from northern Madagascar, known as Uroplatus
garamaso on September 9, 2023.

During an exploration organised in North Madagascar, a

group of scientists discovered a new breed of gecko that has
not yet discovered by any scientists.

“When we first discovered this species in 2000, we already suspected it might be

new to science, but it has taken us many years to amass enough information to
confidently describe it as a new species” says Dr Frank Glaw, curator of
herpetology at the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology.

During the day, they rest head-down on tree trunks with these skin flaps spread
out, blending seamlessly into their surroundings and rendering themselves
virtually invisible, but they come alive as night falls to navigate the slender
branches of the understory in search of invertebrate prey.
