Identifying Your World
#1606
Coins
Q Why do we continue to identify coins by using mint marks? Is it
really necessary?
At a time specie coinage was in circulation it was important to
know who to blame if the coinage was found to be substandard.
The mint of origin or the moneyer responsible for the coinage has
been identified on coins since the time of the ancient Greeks for
this reason. In our modern fiat money world the mint mark and
even the date are meaningless to the general public and the gov-
ernment, the exception being modern bullion composition coins.

Q I’m new to collecting medieval coins. Can you give me an idea

what areas are the most popular?
Most medieval European coins are rather crude unattractive
coins only able to be identified through the legends on them. The
more popular coins for that reason are those on which something
other than a simple Christian cross or monogram appears, unless
the coin was issued in the name of someone well known from his-
tory such as Charlemagne.

Q What was the reason the French aluminum-bronze 50-centime

coins of the early 1960s were what appears to be on short notice?
The 1962 to 1964 French 50-centime coins were withdrawn
after a very brief public notice due to people complaining the
coins were easily mistaken for the smaller diameter 20-centime
coins.

Q I am having trouble locating some foreign commemorative coins

struck about 10 years ago. Could some of these have lower mintages
than what was announced?
While the non-circulating legal tender commemorative coins
of some popularly collected countries are relatively easy to find
in the secondary market, coins issued by less popularly collected
countries are not. It isn’t uncommon for a country to announce
a mintage, then later destroy the unsold pieces—which may be
many. Since it is typically true collectors who purchased these
coins they many times don’t appear in the secondary market until
that individual’s collection has been liquidated.

Q Can I spend or redeem British non-circulating legal tender coins?

According to the Royal Mint, “The Mint told banks in a let-
ter that commemorative ‘£20, £50 and £100 coins are issued for
commemorative purposes only and are not intended to be used as
cash. ‘Members should not accept the coins at bank branches and
customers who wish to return the coins should be referred to the
Royal Mint.’”

Q Is there a quick reference that will help me identify some ancient

Greek coins I purchased as a miscellaneous group?
There are many books that specialize in areas of Greek coins,
but you likely need to start with the out-of-print book Greek
Coin Types and Their Identification by Richard Plant. The book
features line drawings of coins by subject as well as assistance in
identifying coins by their inscriptions.

The silver and gold coinage of 1816 bore the bust of
Alexander I which hardly seems out of place until one
realizes that portraits had not been used on Russian
coins since 1796. This may have been one more indica-
tion of Alexander’s wish to give his coinage a Western
European mold and thus an impression of 19th-century
Liberalism.
In November 1825 Alexander I died at Taganrog
in southern Russia and was succeeded by his brother
Nicholas I. (There was an interregnum at St. Petersburg
when it was at first thought that Constantine was the
new czar; the famous Constantine rouble was produced
at Petersburg during this period of uncertainty.)
Several coinage plans were submitted to Nicholas I in
the spring of 1826 for his consideration. Nicholas at first
is said to have favored his own portrait replacing that of
his brother, but in the end decided to retain Alexander’s
bust, but with an inscription stating that the late ruler
was the “regenerator” of the Polish kingdom; the appro-
priate Imperial Ukase was issued in April 1826. Nicholas
was content to state on the reverse that he (Nicholas)
was the “reigning” king.
With the exception of the changes in design, normal
to the beginning of a new administration, the coin-
age continued much as before. One major rarity of the
period is the 10-zlotych coin of 1827, of which 2 variet-
ies exist, depending upon the mintmaster initials. Those
marked IB (Jacob Benik) are of extraordinary rarity and
were probably struck for a few high-ranking collectors
at the Warsaw Mint. Even the regular issue of the coin,
with initials FH, is quite rare.
Long pent-up emotions of the Polish people exploded
in November 1830 when they rose in open revolt. The
Russians were quickly driven from Warsaw and a new
state established. Nicholas was formally deposed as king
by the Sejm (parliament) and coinage began using the
standards of 1815, but with revolutionary designs. As the

150 Years with Manitoba in the
Confederation
By Tom Michael

THOUGH DELAYED DURING the pan-

demic, both the celebration and coin release for
the 150th Anniversary of Manitoba’s entry in to
the Confederation has come to pass. A 2 ounce
silver proof denominated $30, the Manitoba
150 coin is classic in its reverse design, adapted
from Raymond Taylor’s design for the 1970
Manitoba Centennial dollar struck in nickel. Yet
it’s cutting edge in the obverse, which features a
laser engraved background for Arnold Machin’s
Queen Elizabeth II bust. Look closely and you
can see the background is made up of Manitoba
150 logos.
“The year 2020 marked 150 years since
the Manitoba Act received royal assent, pav-
ing the way for Manitoba to become Canada’s
f ifth province. Manitoba 150 “United in
Celebration – Unis dans la fête” emphasizes
that our province is in the heart of the coun-
try, uniting the east and the west. The unbro-
ken line of the logo represents our unity and
the strong connection we feel to our home,
uniting us as Manitobans. We are thrilled that
the Mint is re-releasing the Centennial coin,
depicting the Manitoba Crocus, while also
now incorporating the Manitoba 150 logo,
to mark our sesquicentennial in 2020.” Brad
Robertson, Chief of Protocol and Manitoba
150 Committee Member.
“The Manitoba 150: United in Celebration
coin, showcasing our provincial flower, the
prairie crocus, is particularly meaningful
in these challenging times, “ said Monique
LaCoste and Stuart Murray, co-chairs of The
Manitoba 150 Host Committee. “Just as the
crocus bursts through the soil each year after
a typical prairie winter to thrive and bring the
promise of a new day, so too will Manitoba
face the future with hope, resilience, and a
spark of joy”
“This coin celebrates an important chap-
ter in Canadian history,” said Marie Lemay,
President and CEO of the Royal Canadian
Mint. “The Mint and its employees are proud
to take part in celebrating Manitoba, with
Winnipeg being home to our state-of-the-art
facility where Canadian circulation coins
have been produced since 1976.”
Limited to a mintage of 2,500, the 2020

The Most Terrifying Coin Ever!
By Mark Benvenuto

The Ravana King of Demons coin is quite thick, providing depth to bring the many layers of arms and heads of the King of Demons to life.

NOT TOO MANY coins can make us jump out of our

skin when we look at them, but the newest offering from
the Cook Islands might qualify. Ravana, king of the
demons in the Hindu pantheon, is the subject of the new-
est issue from the Islands, and presents a visage fierce

There won’t be all that many kings of the demons

Ravana’s place in Hinduism is one of conflict with the
god Vishnu, as he appears in the 7th reincarnation, as the
hero Rama. Since Ravana stole Rama’s wife, according
to the Sanskrit writings, it’s no big leap to see that the
two would get to a major fight. Despite having plenty of
weaponry for his twenty hands, Ravana ends up taking a
mortal wound from one of Rama’s arrows. Good wins this

Trick of the Illusion Bridge
By Tom Michael

A coin with a perspective, the Illusion Bridge 20 Francs teaches a fine lesson of life – no one gets younger and the past remains out of sight behind us
as we progress forward in life.

IN THE NARROWEST sense of the word,

an illusion is simply a trick. But an illusion of
the eyes or an optical illusion is a little more
complex. Sometimes our eyes see an illusion in

I think the child in each of us enjoys being
tricked as much as we enjoy being scared. So it
is not surprising that the Swiss Mint embarked
on a coin illusion project with Swiss artist
Sandro Del-Prete.
Del-Prete has a serious canon of work in this
arena. In fact he coined a word for his artistic
optical illusion work, “illusorism”. A popular
example of this illusorism is displayed in his oil
painting “The Bridge of Life”, which was used
as the model for the silver 20 francs issued in
2021 by the Swiss Mint.
One of the most interesting observations
Del-Prete has made of this painting is, “The
people are perpetually moving forward, towards
the observer, and are never seen from behind.
They are always heading towards the end of life. As no one gets age of 19,000.

The Eternal Army, the Terracotta Warriors
By Mark Benvenuto

The copper and silver editions of this coin both sport incredible detail with the chariot drawn by four horses on the obverse, and three terracotta
warriors on the reverse. The warriors include detailing on their armor, and each face is different, just as the warriors themselves.

WHEN YOU ARE the emperor, you pretty much can get what
you want. Emperor Qin Shihuang, China’s first, wanted his
army to accompany him to the next life – and he got it.
The terracotta warriors – sometimes called the terracotta
army – rank as one of the greatest archaeological
finds the world has ever seen, an army made and
buried with their emperor. The size and scope
of this burial site is enormous, and the work
that went into creating it for the emperor is
equally impressive. Not only does the site
cover a whopping 20 square miles, but each
terracotta warrior appears to be distinct in
facial features from the others. It appears
that they were modeled from real, living sol-
diers of the emperor, by skilled artisans who
must indeed have been working overtime!
Recently, the Cook Islands have issued a
copper $1 piece commemorating this ancient
army, featuring Queen Elizabeth, as well one
of the chariots of the army on the obverse, and
a stunning image of three of the eight thou-
sand warriors on the reverse. Weighing in at an
impressive 50 grams – more than an ounce – these
big copper pieces have been minted in proof-like
condition and have been made in an ultra-high relief.
Fortunately for us, while the Cook Islands have
released more than one version of this coin commemorating
the terracotta warriors, they have not been as complete as the
sculptors of ancient China, and have not produced 8,000 coins,
one for each warrior!
The copper $1 piece is an impressive commemorative, but for The 3-ounce silver coin highlights one of the warriors on the reverse,
creating a beautiful pop of color.
