GRIP AMID INCAPACITY – Mark Genesis T.

Ala-an

At our school, we often talk about the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of
challenges. These values are exemplified by one of our own learners, whose story is both
inspiring and moving.

Meet Jenus F. Requina, 14 years old residing at Sanyata, San Roque, Bislig City a grade 8 learner
of Maharlika National High School who was born with a cleft lip and palate. A cleft is a birth
defect that occurs when the tissues that form the lip and palate do not join together properly
during fetal development. This can lead to a range of health and social challenges, including
difficulties with eating, speaking, and hearing, as well as stigma and discrimination.

His journey has not been an easy one. As a child, he underwent operation and treatments to
address his cleft and related issues. He also faced teasing and bullying from some of his peers,
who made fun of his appearance and speech.

Despite these obstacles, he remained determined to succeed. He worked hard in school and
extracurricular activities, and found comfort in some subject. He also sought support from his
family, and friends, who encouraged him to embrace his differences and strive for his goals.

Today, Jenus is a thriving learner who excels in academics, sports, and leadership. He is also an
advocate for people with clefts, and has spoken at conferences and events to raise awareness and
promote inclusion.

In an interview, Jenus shared some of the lessons he has learned from his experiences. "Having a
cleft is not easy, but it's also not the end of the world," he said. "You can choose to let it define
you or you can choose to define yourself. I chose to define myself as a learner, a friend, a son, a
brother, and a human being who deserves respect and dignity like everyone else."

Jenus story is a reminder that disability does not have to equal incapacity. With the right
support, mindset, and attitude, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. As we
continue our journey as learners and members of the school community, let us take inspiration
from his example and strive to be more compassionate, inclusive, and resilient. Though his
disability slightly affects how he communicates, as he was born cleft, he has no deterrent reason
to get up, go to school, and participate in class. He gets out of his shell like any other child
enjoying school life – learning and getting to know people.
