1. Do you think that the electrons in helium atom are closer or farther away than electron in hydrogen
atom?

2. How can the spectrum of hydrogen contain so many lines when hydrogen contains only one electron?

3. Why does it is easier to predict position of more massive object?

4. Explain how emission and absorption spectra are produced.

5. Find the wavelength of the light emitted by hydrogen as predicted by the Rydberg formula with n = 4
and n=1. What is the nature of this radiation (visible, x-ray, etc)? [Ans: 97 nm]

6. What is the approximate radius of the n=1 orbit of the innermost electron in the aluminium atom?.
Atomic number of aluminium is 13. [Ans: 4.1×10-15 m]

7. Find the wavelengths of K, K, and K of molybdenum. Atomic number of molybdenum is 42.
[Ans: 0.069nm, 0.059nm, 0.055nm]

8. (i) Find the energy of the hydrogen atom in the n=3 state. (ii) Find the wavelength of photon emitted
in the transition n=3n=1 [Ans: -1.51eV, 1.03×10-7 m]

9. Use Bohr’s model to construct the energy level diagram for beryllium ion, Be 3+ (Z=4). Calculate the
energy needed to ionize the electron in n=3 state.

10. Find the wavelength of electrons with kinetic energy of 10, 100 and 1×10 4 eV. Compare with the
wavelength of visible light and x-rays. [Ans: 0.39nm, 0.12 nm, 0.012nm]

11. Find the wavelength of a raindrop with mass of 1 mg and speed of 1 cm/s. Does it likely that the wave
properties of the raindrop could be easily detected? [Ans: 6.6×10-29 m]

12. Find the kinetic energy of a neutron with the same wavelength as bluelight (=450nm).
[Ans: 6.5×10-28 J]

13. The uncertainty of velocity of an electron is 0.25 m/s. What is the minimum uncertainty of the
electron’s position? [Ans: 2.3×10-4 m]

14. An electron remains in excited state of an atom for 10 -8 s. What is the minimum uncertainty in the
energy of this state? [Ans: 5.3×10-27 J]

15. The kinetic energy of an electron is given by 4.50  0.01 keV. What is the minimum uncertainty of
the electron’s position? [Ans: 1.3×10-6 m]

16. What is the uncertainty in the mass of a muon (mass = 1.057 MeV/c 2 , given its lifetime is 2.20 s?
Give the answer in the unit of eV/c2 [Ans: 1.5×10-10 eV/c2]
