THE AFRICAN CONGRESS FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS

The African congress for architecture students is a conference where African architecture students have
the opportunity to come together, share knowledge, build connections, and collectively contribute to the
growth and development of their profession.
It is a periodic gathering that fosters collaboration, knowledge exchange, and collective growth among
African architecture students every three years. This congress is to be hosted by selected different
Architecture Student Associations from different African Regions.
The congress for African architecture students provides a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing,
networking, professional development, and advocacy. Under different themes, it’s meant to foster a
sense of community, inspire creativity, and empower students to actively shape the future of architecture
in Africa.

Each host for the congress must carefully state a theme for the congress and ensure the following
objectives are achieved:
I. Knowledge Exchange: The congress provides a platform for African architecture students to
share their research findings, innovative ideas, and design projects. It promotes knowledge
exchange and exposes students to a wide range of perspectives, foster intellectual growth and
inspiration.
II. Networking Opportunities: The congress brings together African architecture students from
various universities and countries across the world. It allows them to connect, network, and build
relationships with their peers, establishing valuable contacts that can lead to future collaborations
and professional opportunities.
III. Professional Development: The congress includes workshops, seminars, and lectures conducted
by experienced architects, educators, and industry professionals. These sessions provide valuable
insights into architectural practice, emerging trends, technological advancements, and career
development, enhancing the students' professional skills and knowledge.
IV. Exposure to Diverse Architectural Approaches: African architecture encompasses a rich
tapestry of diverse cultural, historical, and contextual influences. The congress provides a
platform for students to explore and learn about different architectural approaches from various
regions within Africa, broadening their understanding and appreciation of the continent's
architectural heritage.
V. Peer Feedback and Critique: The congress offers students an opportunity to present their work
and receive feedback from their peers and experts in the field. This constructive critique can help
students refine their design skills, develop a critical mindset, and improve the quality of their
architectural projects.
VI. Platform for Advocacy: The annual congress serves as a platform for students to advocate for
issues that are important to them, such as sustainable design, social equity, and cultural
preservation. It empowers students to voice their concerns and aspirations, contributing to
broader discussions on the role of architecture in addressing societal challenges in Africa.
VII. Inspiration and Motivation: Attending a congress with like-minded individuals who share a
passion for architecture can be a source of inspiration and motivation. Students witness the

achievements of their peers, engage in creative discussions, and gain a renewed enthusiasm for
their own architectural journey.
VIII. Building a Sense of Community: The congress will help foster a sense of community and
camaraderie among African architecture students. It creates a shared space where students can
bond, exchange ideas, and form lasting friendships, strengthening the collective identity of
African architecture students.
IX. Exposure to Industry Exhibitions and Products: The congress features exhibitions and
showcases by architectural firms, construction companies, and manufacturers of architectural
products. This exposure will allow students to stay updated on the latest industry trends,
materials, and technologies, expanding their knowledge of the practical aspects of architecture.
X. Platform for Collaboration and Initiatives: The congress is a catalyst for collaborative
initiatives among architecture students. It facilitates the formation of student-led organizations
such as The Federation of African Students of Architecture (FASA), research groups, and
community engagement projects, empowering students to take collective action and contribute to
positive change within their communities.

THE 2023 INAUGURAL CONGRESS

The inaugural African Congress for Architecture Students will be hosted by the Architecture Students
Association at the International University of East Africa in Uganda from September 30th to
October 2nd 2023.

This groundbreaking event will gather architecture students from across Africa to participate in
enriching discussions, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative endeavors. The congress will serve as a
platform for students to present their design projects, research findings, and innovative ideas. It will
feature esteemed keynote speakers and captivating exhibitions, providing valuable opportunities for
networking and professional development.

The main objective of this year’s congress is to found the Federation of African Students of
Architecture (FASA)

We are also delighted to announce that this congress will offer an online attendance option, allowing
architecture students who are unable to physically attend the event to participate virtually. With this
hybrid format, we aim to ensure inclusivity and accessibility, allowing a wider audience to join the
congress and contribute to the dialogue.
Whether attending in person or online, the African Congress for Architecture Students 2023 promises to
be a transformative experience, fostering a sense of community, inspiring creativity, and promoting
cross-cultural exchange. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this momentous gathering of
aspiring architects from across Africa.

2023 CONGRESS THEME

"Building Bridges: African Architectural Narratives Shaping Tommorow"

"Building Bridges: African Architectural Narratives Shaping Tomorrow" is the theme chosen for the
inaugural African Congress for Architecture Students. The main objective for the congress is to establish
the Federation of African Students of Architecture. This theme embodies the vision and purpose of the
congress, encapsulating its main objective and aspirations.

The theme "Building Bridges" symbolizes the intention to foster connections, collaboration, and unity
among architecture students across Africa. It emphasizes the importance of coming together to exchange
ideas, share experiences, and collectively contribute to the future of African architecture. By building
bridges, the congress seeks to overcome geographical, cultural, and educational barriers, creating a
platform for dialogue and mutual learning.

The phrase "African Architectural Narratives" highlights the rich tapestry of architectural heritage,
diversity, and innovation found across the African continent. It recognizes the need to embrace and
celebrate the unique narratives, histories, and cultural contexts that shape African architecture. Through
exploring these narratives, the congress aims to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of
African architecture, inspiring students to contribute to its evolution.

The phrase "Shaping Tomorrow" reflects the forward-looking nature of the congress. It emphasizes
the role of architecture students in envisioning and creating a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant future
for African cities and communities. By emphasizing the importance of innovative design, technological
advancements, environmental consciousness, and social responsibility, the congress aims to empower
students to shape the future of African architecture.

The main objective of the congress is to establish the Federation of African Students of Architecture.
This objective underscores the congress's commitment to fostering long-term collaboration and
cooperation among architecture students across the continent. The federation will provide a platform for
ongoing exchange, networking, and collective action, empowering students to advocate for their needs,
address common challenges, and contribute to the advancement of architecture education and practice in
Africa.

By focusing on this theme, the African Congress for Architecture Students 2023 shall contribute to a
deeper understanding and appreciation of Africa's architectural history, regional diversity, and design
heritage. It aims to inspire a new generation of architects who are passionate about sustainable,
culturally responsive design and who can shape the future of African architecture.

THE FEDERATION OF AFRICAN STUDENTS OF ARCHITECTURE (FASA)

The African Congress for Architecture Students 2023 has a major objective of founding the Federation
of African Students of Architecture. The Federation is an independent, nonprofit, student-run
organization dedicated to establishing a network of architecture students across Africa that fosters
communication, cooperation, and the sharing of ideas and resources.

The Federation aims at creating a platform where African students unite as an opportunity for increased
collaboration and knowledge exchange. This platform would allow students to learn from each other's
experiences, gain exposure to different architectural approaches and practices from various regions, and
collaborate on projects and initiatives that address common challenges faced by African communities.
The federation will facilitate the creation of mentorship programs, joint research projects, and shared
learning resources, ultimately enhancing the educational and professional development of African
architecture students and promoting a sense of unity and solidarity within the field.

A platform fostering learning that empowers African architecture students’ collaboration and
professional growth while promoting the values of design excellence, sustainability and social
responsibility.

THE OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the Federation of African Students of Architecture (FASA) are determined by
the collective needs and aspirations of the African architecture student community.
i. Networking and Collaboration: Facilitating connections and collaboration among architecture
students across Africa, fostering a sense of community and enabling knowledge sharing and peer
support.
ii. Educational and Professional Development: Providing opportunities for professional growth

and development through workshops, seminars, conferences, and guest lectures. Offering
resources and information on architectural education, licensure, and career pathways.
iii. Advocacy and Representation: Advocating for the interests and needs of African architecture
students at regional and international levels. Representing their voices and concerns in
discussions regarding architectural education, accreditation, and standards.
iv. Cultural Exchange and Diversity: Celebrating and promoting the rich cultural heritage and
architectural diversity of Africa. Encouraging cross-cultural exchange and learning among
students from different African countries.
v. Community Engagement and Social Impact: Encouraging architecture students to engage with
their local communities and contribute to social and sustainable development through design and
planning initiatives. Promoting the importance of architecture in addressing social, economic,
and environmental challenges in Africa.
vi. Research and Innovation: Promoting research and innovation in architectural design,
technologies, and sustainable practices. Encouraging students to explore and contribute to the
advancement of architectural knowledge relevant to Africa's context.
vii. Mentorship and Guidance: Establishing mentorship programs to connect experienced
architects with aspiring students, providing guidance and advice on career development,
academic pursuits, and practical experiences.
viii. Collaboration with Professional Associations: Collaborating with established architectural
associations and organizations within Africa to strengthen the ties between students and
practicing professionals. Creating opportunities for internships, job placements, and mentorship
from industry experts.
ix. International Collaboration: Facilitating collaboration and exchange programs between
African architecture students and their counterparts from other regions, promoting a global
perspective and fostering cultural understanding.

THE FEDERATION STRUCTURE

It is important to note that the specific structure of the association may vary depending on the size,
resources, and goals of the association. The key is to create a structure that allows for effective
governance, representation, collaboration, and engagement among architecture students across Africa.
The federation will be structured in the following manner in accordance to the federation constitution:

Governing Body:
The governing body will consist of elected student representatives who will oversee the association's
operations and decision-making processes. This body could include positions such as a president, vice-
president, secretary, treasurer, and other relevant roles as needed.

Executive Committee:
The executive committee will be responsible for managing specific areas of the federation, such as
events, communications, finance, and membership. These committee members can be appointed or
elected and will work closely with the governing body to implement the federation's objectives and
initiatives.

Regional or Country Chapters:


Regional or country-based chapters within the federation will ensure representation and engagement
across different African countries or regions. Each chapter can have its own leadership structure,
including a president or coordinator, to address specific local needs and facilitate closer collaboration
among architecture students within the region.

Standing Committees:
Standing committees will be dedicated to specific focus areas such as education, professional
development, community engagement, sustainability, and advocacy. These committees can be
responsible for organizing relevant activities, conducting research, and advocating for their respective
areas of focus.

General Assembly:
General assembly meetings should be conducted regularly to provide a platform for all members to
come together, share updates, discuss important matters, and make decisions collectively. The general
assembly can also serve as a space for members to present research papers, projects, and ideas to the
wider federation.

Membership Structure:
The membership structure will allow architecture students from different universities or educational
institutions across Africa to join the federation. It will offer both individual and institutional
memberships, with benefits such as access to resources, networking opportunities, and discounted rates
for events and workshops.

Communication Channels:
Effective communication channels will ensure smooth information flow within the federation. This may
include a website, email newsletters, social media platforms, and online discussion forums. They will
encourage active participation and engagement from members through these channels.

Collaboration with Stakeholders:


Partnerships and collaborations with relevant stakeholders, including architectural associations,
educational institutions, industry professionals, and government entities will be instilled. These
collaborations can provide valuable support, resources, and opportunities for the federation and its
members.

Financial Management:
A clear financial management system shall be defined, including budgeting, fundraising, and
transparency in financial transactions. This will ensure proper accounting and reporting mechanisms to
maintain the federation's financial integrity.

Evaluation and Continuous Improvement:


Regular assessment of the effectiveness of the association's activities and initiatives will be done. This
