ACTIVITY 2
Guide Questions:

1. Describe the shape of the s, p, and d orbitals.

An s-orbital is spherical with the nucleus at its center, a p-orbitals is dumbbell-shaped and four of
the five d orbitals are cloverleaf shaped. The fifth d orbital is shaped like an elongated dumbbell
with a doughnut around its middle.
2. Can electrons be exactly found on the regions depicted by the orbital shapes? Explain.
The electron is a quantum particle and cannot have a distinct location, but the electron's
orbital can be defined as the region of space around the nucleus in which the probability of
finding the electron exceeds some arbitrary threshold value, such as 90% or 99%

REFLECTION

The practical applications of this is that they form the basis for chemistry. I am pretty
sure these applications of quantum numbers/ orbital diagrams / magnetic property has in real
life.

BARIUM 2A 2 METAL 2
PHOSPORUS 5A 5 NONMETAL
SULFUR 6A 6 NONMETAL 2
BROMINE 7A 7 NONMETAL 1
Guide Questions

1. Which type of elements will likely to form a cation? Anion?

Metals tend to lose electrons forming cations while nonmetals tend to gain electrons forming
into anions.
2. How are cations and anions formed?
Cation is formed when a neutral atom loses one or more electrons. Anion is formed when a
neutral atom gains one or more electrons.
3. What did you notice about the charge of the ion?
The charge of the ion corresponds to the number of electrons lost or gained.

ELECTRONS
1. SODIUM 1A 1 NA+
2. POTASSIUM 1A 1 K+
3. CALCIUM 2A 2 CA2+

REFLECTION
1. How are ions formed?
In terms of ions, ions are usually formed when the number of protons in an atom
does not equal the number of electrons. The more protons are present, the ion is
positive and it is well known as a cation, If more electrons are present, the ion is
negative and referred to as an anion.
2. If you were an element, which group would you choose? Do you want to be a giver
or a receiver? Why?
I would choose to be a giver because I love helping the needy and the most suffering
ones.

3. What will happen if there is an imbalance of the important ions in our body
It will trigger twitching, weakness, seizures and heart rhythm disturbances.
