Direction: Solve the following problems below;(use yellow pad for your solution)

1. A normally consolidated clay stratum of 3 m thickness has two permeable layers at its top and
bottom. The liquid limit and the initial void ratio of the clay are 36 % and 0.82 respectively, while
the initial overburden pressure at the middle of clay layer is 2kg/cm². Due to the construction of a
new building this pressure increases by 1.5 kg/cm². Compute the probable consolidation
settlement of the building? (20 pts)

2. A 5 m thick layer of normally consolidated clay supports a newly constructed building. The weight
of sand overlying the clay layer is 660 gm/cm², while the new construction increases the stress at
the middle of the clay layer by 450 gm/cm². Compute the probable consolidation settlement of the
building. Given, (20 pts)

LL = 39% G = 2.7 w = 45%

3. A 3 m. x 3 m. square footing is embedded 0.60 m into a sand profile having a bulk unit
weight of 18 kN/m³ and bearing capacity factors Nc = 48, Nq = 25 and Ny = 19. Neglecting shape
factors, if the depth to the water table is 2.10 m. below the ground surface and the proposed
column load is 3340kN, find the factor of safety against bearing capacity? (20 pts)

4. A retaining wall
has a height of 6 m. It supports a horizontal backfill of non-cohesive soil with a groundwater table
at a depth of 3 m. below the horizontal backfill. Cohesion on soil layers are 8 and 10 kpa
respectively. (20 pts)
➀ Compute the effective stress at the bottom of the wall.
➁ Compute the force per unit weight of the wall using Rankine’s active state.
➂ Determine the location of the resultant force acting on the wall.
