Distributor Manual
AMI-1200 l Short Arm (UP): Gate arms less than 9 ft. in length.
l Long Arm (DOWN): Gate arms between 9 ft. and 12 ft. in length.

Power Fail Arm Position (SW1-2): This setting determines the position of
the gate arm when a power failure occurs and the Up/Normal/Down
(UND) Switch is set to NORMAL.

l On (UP): The gate arm will be raised in the UP position after a power failure
allowing vehicles to leave the facility.
l Off (DOWN): The gate arm will be left in the DOWN position after a power failure
preventing vehicles from entering or leaving the facility.

Note: If the UND Switch is set to UP or DOWN, the gate arm

will not move on power recovery.

Extra Sensory (SW1-5): The Extra Sensory feature determines what

happens when the gate arm strikes an object as it is being lowered.

l Extra Sensory (UP): The gate raises the arm to the UP position. The arm will
either remain up, or will lower again after a timeout period has passed, as
specified by the ES Timeout Enable switch (SW2-7).
l Gentle Touch (DOWN): The gate arm stops once it strikes an object and remains
in this position until the obstruction is cleared. When the obstruction is cleared
the gate slowly moves (floats) to the DOWN position.

Multi-Vend (SW1-7): The Multi-Vend feature determines whether the gate

will accept multiple vend requests before the gate arm has closed behind
the current vehicle.

l Enabled (UP): If the gate receives multiple vend requests before the gate arm has
closed, the arm will remain UP until a number of vehicles have crossed Loop C
equal to the number of vend requests. If a backout occurs, the number of stored
vend requests will decrement by one each time the backout timer expires (SW2-
6).
l Disabled (DOWN): The gate will ignore any vend requests until the gate arm has
closed after the current vehicle has left Loop C.

Field Connect Board Output 8 (SW1-8): Output 8 on the Field Connect

Board is controlled by this DIP switch. This setting has no effect for gates
without the Field Connect Board.

Two-Way (with RS-485 COMMS) On On Off

Backout Mode (SW2-5): Backout mode determines how the AMI-1200

responds to a vehicle backout.

l Enabled (UP): When a vehicle backs out of the lane the gate arm will lower after a
timeout period (Backout Timer). The duration of this period is set by the Backout
Timer (SW2-6) setting and starts when a vehicle leaves the A Loop. The timer
continues to run until the vehicle is detected by loops A and C. If the timer expires
without the vehicle crossing the loops the gate arm lowers.
l Disabled (DOWN): The gate leaves the arm in the UP position until a vehicle
crosses the C Loop. If backout function is provided by commands from other lane
equipment then this switch should be in the Disabled position.

Distributor Manual
AMI-1200 Backout Timer (SW2-6): Selects a time duration of 5 or 10 seconds that is
used for the Backout and Extra Sensory features.

l Ten (UP): 10 second timeout.

l Five (DOWN): 5 second timeout.

l Backout Timer: The amount of time the gate is left in the UP position after a
vehicle leaves Loop A and does not cross Loop C. See Backout Mode (SW2-5) for
more information.
l Extra Sensory Timer: The amount of time the gate arm is left in the UP position
after an Extra Sensory event occurs. See Extra Sensory (SW2-7) for more
information.

ES Timeout Enable (SW2-7): This setting determines when the gate arm
is lowered after an Extra Sensory event occurs. An Extra Sensory event
occurs when the gate arm strikes an object while lowering, or stops for
any reason while lowering. When the Extra Sensory (SW1-5) switch is set
to Extra Sensory and an extra sensory event occurs, the gate raises the
arm to allow the obstruction or input to clear.

l Enabled (UP): The Backout Timer (SW2-6) setting controls the duration that the
arm remains in the UP position before it lowers.
l Disabled (DOWN): The gate will remain in the UP position until a vehicle crosses
the C Loop.

Auto Stop Mode (SW2-8): This setting determines how the gate responds
to a vehicle crossing the C Loop while it lowers the gate arm.

l Enabled (UP): The arm will stop lowering until the vehicle leaves the C Loop. The
arm will then continue to lower after the vehicle leaves the loop.
l Disabled (DOWN): A vehicle on the closing loop will be ignored and the gate arm
will continue to lower.

Changing the DIP Switch Settings

The DIP Switch settings are read when the AMI-1200 is powered on. To
change the DIP Switch settings:

1. If the AMI-1200 is on, power OFF the device.

2. Change the DIP Switches to the desired settings.
3. Power ON the device to use the new settings and return to normal operation.

adjustments have been made. Always keep the battery disconnected and
the power off when installing or servicing the gate.

Page 25 of 77 Copyright © 2017 Amano McGann, Inc. AMI1200_Distributor_05262017

Distributor Manual
AMI-1200 The battery is required for the Power Failure Arm Position feature to move
the gate UP during a power failure, and is not required for normal
operation.

Note: Amano McGann recommends the battery remain

connected even if the Power Failure Arm Position feature is
not used, in order to maintain the battery’s charge.

Battery Bypass Switch (SW6)

In the event of a power failure the connected battery can power the gate
for one cycle of operation. To cycle the gate using the battery backup:

1. Press the bypass button on the Gate Control Board and hold until the status light
begins to blink.
2. Release the bypass button and wait for the rate of blinking to change.
3. Within 20 seconds of releasing the button, switch the Up/Normal/Down (UND) switch
to the desired gate position.
The gate arm rises or lowers to the new position and the gate board powers off.

Note: If no action has been initiated within 20 seconds of

releasing the button, the gate board powers off
automatically.

Distributor Manual
AMI-1200
Power Failure Recovery
When powered on after a power failure, the gate arm remains in its
current position until the following conditions occur:

l The Up/Normal/Down (UND) switch is moved from UP or DOWN positions to

NORMAL, and a vend or closing loop input occurs.
l The UND switch is moved from Normal to UP or DOWN positions.
l The arm is up and the gate receives an ON then OFF Loop C input.

Note: When powered on the loop detectors re-tune to the

lane conditions and if a vehicle is present the detector
tunes out the vehicle.

Slow Mode
Slow mode is a built-in safety feature that will raise or lower the gate at a
slow speed when the gate arm is not detected by Up and Down Limit
Switches at power-up. It is intended to protect against driving the gate
arm too fast to the physical stop location. Slow mode will last for one UP
cycle to allow the limit switches to detect the gate arm.

If the gate arm is detected by either the Up or Down limit switches at

power up, the gate arm will move at the normal speed on the first cycle.

Gate Operation Test
After the gate arm is installed, its operation must be fully tested.

1. Verify that the gate arm is properly installed.

2. Locate the Main Power Switch and turn it OFF.
3. Set the Up/Normal/Down (UND) switch to NORMAL.
4. Turn the Main Power Switch to ON.
5. Verify that the gate arm behaves as expected per below Power Up Operation.
6. While the gate is powered ON, toggle the UND switch between UP and DOWN to
verify that the gate motion follows the UND switch.

Power Up Operation

NORMAL: On power-up, if the gate arm is in the UP or DOWN position (on

the Up Limit Switch or Down Limit Switch), the gate arm remains in its
current position and the gate begins normal operation. If the gate is
between the UP and DOWN positions (not on either limit switch), the gate
arm will slowly rise to the UP position and remain up until either a vehicle
is detected on and then leaves Loop C, or the UND switch is set to DOWN.

UP or DOWN: On power-up, the gate arm will not move from its current
position. This is a built-in safety feature that prevents the gate from
moving after a power failure or when the gate has been manually shut
down for maintenance. If the gate is currently UP, a momentary activation
of the C Loop will bring the gate down. Alternatively, toggling the UND
switch to either the UP or DOWN position will cause the gate to move to
the indicated position.

AMI-1200
Gate Arm Adjustment
The UP (vertical) and DOWN (horizontal) travel limits of the AMI-1200 arm
are controlled by the Up Limit Switch (ULS) and Down Limit Switch (DLS),
which are located near the interior end of the gate arm shaft on the top
plate assembly.

During normal operation the gate arm will travel up until it is detected by
the ULS, or down until it is detected by the DLS. These limit switches
consist of Hall effect sensors with adjustable positions. The ULS sensor
can be adjusted to maximum of 5 degrees of over-travel past vertical, and
a minimum of 70 degrees up from horizontal.

Note: Left-hand drive mechanism shown. Right-hand drive

mechanism is reversed.

WARNING! Always make sure that the gate is in manual

mode (The Up/Normal/Down (UND) switch is in UP or
DOWN position) and the battery is disconnected when you
adjust the limit switches. The UND switch must be in the
DOWN position to adjust the ULS and in the UP position to
adjust the DLS. This prevents the gate from moving when
power is turned on and off. Be extremely careful of the
pinch points! Do not have hands or tools on the mechanism
while motor is moving.

l Small adjustments in the limit switch position may have a large effect on the

position of the arm.

l Be careful not to bump the UND switch when adjusting the limit switches.

l The gate arm must be installed before attempting to adjust the DLS or ULS.

Vertical Gate Arm Adjustment

Important: The following instructions are for adjusting the

vertical travel of the gate arm for a left- hand drive
mechanism. The adjustments for a right- hand drive
mechanism are reversed.

1. Place the Up/Normal/Down (UND) switch in the DOWN position.

The arm will move down and stop when it reaches the Down Limit Switch (DLS).
2. Using a 5.5mm nut driver, loosen the nuts on the front of the Up Limit Switch
(ULS) Hall effect sensor enough to slide the sensor in small increments.
3. Move the ULS sensor right to adjust the arm's vertical limit up, left to adjust the
arm's vertical limit down.
4. After making an adjustment, momentarily move the UND switch to UP to test the
vertical position, then return it to DOWN.

WARNING! Make sure to keep hands and tools away from

moving parts!

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have the gate arm in the desired UP position.
6. Secure the ULS sensor in place. Be careful not to move the sensor while you are
tightening the nuts.

Horizontal Gate Arm Adjustment

Important: The following instructions are for adjusting the

horizontal travel of the gate arm for a left- hand drive
mechanism. The adjustments for a right- hand drive
mechanism are reversed.

Brush Locations Brush Wear Line

The motor brushes should be replaced when the body of the brush has
worn to the brush wear line.

Caution: Place the brushes back into the same side of the
motor and place them in the same orientation (Up or
Down). If the brushes are not replaced in the same
orientation they wear faster. To avoid confusion, check only
one motor brush at a time.

To replace or inspect the motor brushes:

1. Set the Main Power Switch to the OFF position.

2. Using a flat-head screwdriver or a penny coin, remove the brush cap on the motor
housing.
3. Pry the brush from the housing.
4. Inspect the brush.
l If the brush is worn insert a new brush.

l If the brush is not worn, re-insert the brush.

5. Re-install and secure the brush cap.

6. Set the Main Power Switch to the ON position.

Lubrication
The pillow block bearings on the gate shaft should be lubricated with a
few drops of oil every 100,000 cycles.
