Chapter Seven: Work, Energy and Power

Work Calculations

1) Work Done by a Constant Force

W = F.d = Fd cos 
SI Units: N.m = Joule

Work is a scalar quantity.

• The sign of the work depends on the direction of (F) relative to (d):

2. Zero: θ =90, r=0. (n, mg)
3. Negative: θ =180. (fk)

• Work is a Transfer of Energy: The System either gains energy (if W > 0)
or loses energy ( if W < 0).
