Web Browser
A web browser is a type of software that allows you to find
and view websites on the Internet. Web browser can show
text, audio, video, animation and more. It is the
responsibility of a web browser to interpret text and
commands contained in the web page.
There are many different web browsers, but some of the
most common ones include Google Chrome, Internet
Explorer, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox.

MAIN PARTS OF A WEB BROWSER

1. Navigation buttons is used to go back and forward while browsing.

2. Refresh buttons is used to force web browser to reload webpage.
3. Address bar is used to enter website and page names.
4. New Tab Button opens a new page in the same window when selected. This option allows for
many websites to be open but contained within one main window frame. This keeps the desktop
from being cluttered with too many open windows.

Browser tabs allow opening many websites on a single web browser's window - very helpful when
reading several websites at the same time.

Bookmark button (Usually shaped like a star) Saves a link to the current page so that you can find
it again later.
When you save a destination address as a favorite or bookmark, your browser stores the URL, along
with its site or page name, so you can access it again with a single click.

Menu Button. In Chrome, the menu is indicated by three vertical dots in the upper right corner of
the browser window (Edge uses three horizontal dots; Firefox uses three stacked horizontal lines).
Once the menu button is selected a dropdown menu will appear.

A hyperlink (also called a link) is a section of text, an image, graphic or icon that is linked to a
specific webpage, image, file, or object. This is commonly seen in a browser as text, often a blue
color.
Once the link is selected or clicked, the webpage automatically navigates to the linked webpage,
icon, image, graphic or file. This is one of the main tools used when conducting a search on the
web.

Working with files
Understanding how to work with files and folders is an important part of using your computer. Once
you understand how files and folder work, you will use them all the time.

What is a file?
There are many different types of files you can use. For example, Microsoft Word documents, digital
photos, digital music, and digital videos are all types of files. You might even think of a file as a
digital version of a real-world thing you can interact with on your computer. When you use different
applications, you will often be viewing, creating, or editing files.

What is a folder?
Windows uses folders to help you organize files. You can put files inside a
folder, just like you would put documents inside a real folder. In the image
below, you can see some folders on the desktop.

File Explorer
You can view and organize files and folders using a built-in application
known as File Explorer.

Understanding file extensions

Your computer has many different types of files on it,
and each one has its own file extension. A file extension
is a three- or four-letter identifier found at the end of a
file name and following a period. These extensions tell
you about the characteristics of a file and its use.

Examples of file extensions

❖ A JPEG uses the .jpg or .jpeg extension (for example, image.jpg).
❖ A Word document uses the .docx extension, or .doc for older versions (for example,
CoverLetter.docx).
❖ An MP3 audio file uses the .mp3 extension (for example, rhyme_rap.mp3).
❖ An Excel spreadsheet uses the .xlsx extension, or .xls for older versions (for example,
budget.xls).
❖ Below is a list of the most common file extensions, broken into categories by type of files.

Audio file formats by file extensions
There are several audio files formats, standards, and file extensions used today. Below is a list of
the most common audio file extensions.
❖ .aif - AIF audio file
❖ .cda - CD audio track file
❖ .mid or. midi - MIDI audio file.
❖ .mp3 - MP3 audio file
❖ .mpa - MPEG-2 audio file
❖ .ogg - Ogg Vorbis audio file
❖ .wav - WAV file
❖ .wma - WMA audio file
❖ .wpl - Windows Media Player playlist

Executable file extensions

The most common executable file are files ending with the .exe file extension. However, other files
can also be run by themselves or with the aid of an interpreter.

❖ .cgi or .pl - Perl script file
❖ .com - MS-DOS command file
❖ .exe - Executable file

Image file formats by file extension

There are many different image types and image file extensions that can be used when creating
and saving images on the computer. Below is a list of the most common image file extensions.

❖ .ico - Icon file
❖ .jpeg or .jpg - JPEG image
❖ .png - PNG image

The Internet is the most used resource on the computer and because web servers supply the files,
there are many different file extensions utilized. Below are a list of the most common file extensions
on the web.

❖ .cer - Internet security certificate
❖ .cfm - ColdFusion Markup file
❖ .cgi or .pl - Perl script file
❖ .css - Cascading Style Sheet file
❖ .htm and .html - HTML file
