SPEAKING ENGLISH ON THE PHONE
W hen answering the phone and you hear someone speaking
in English, don't be afraid to reply! The only way to win your
fea r o f t a lkin g on th e phon e in a s ec on d l a n g u age is to

practice often. Most people find speaking English on the


phone quite difficult at first because they can't see the other
person's eyes, mouth and overall body language. In face-to-
face c onv e rs a tion w e c ommuni ca t e not only with wor d s, b ut

a lso with our e y e s, with fac i a l e xpr e ssions, a n d b y movin g our

hands and bodies. When speaking on the phone, however, all


you can use is spoken language. But speaking on the phone
will become much easier after you've learned the special
vocabulary and phrases and make sure you have also a
c h a n ce to pr ac ti ce th e m a s o f t e n a s possi b l e .

THE TELEPHONE
Bef ore the telephone the only way to send a message over a distance was to send
it by mail or by telegraph. The telegraph was a machine that sent little electrical
pulses to a wire to another machine on the other side. People sent these pulses in

THE TELEPHONE
l phones have changed a lot over the years. Before the first mobile phones (or

These landline phones are still being used in some places, but most people now
use mobile phones or smartphones. These phones send signals through the air
rather than through physical telephone lines.

T he most advanced phones are called smartphones. These are like small
c omput e rs with m a ny f un c tions be si de s m a kin g t e l e phon e ca lls. Y ou ca n s e n d t e xt

messages, take and send photos, record and play audio and video files, connect to
the internet, and do much more. Even though telephone technology has changed a
lot over the years, the language and vocabulary used when making a call has
remained mostly the same.
