SPEAKING ENGLISH ON THE PHONE
W hen answering the phone and you hear someone speaking
in English, don't be afraid to reply! The only way to win your
fea r o f t a lkin g on th e phon e in a s ec on d l a n g u age is to
telegraph pulses. Mr Bell’s first words into the new telephone were to his
a ssist a nt, a n d h e s a i d : “ Wa tson, c om e h e r e . I n eed you!”.” He llo, this is Wa tson.

These landline phones are still being used in some places, but most people now
use mobile phones or smartphones. These phones send signals through the air
rather than through physical telephone lines.
T he most advanced phones are called smartphones. These are like small

messages, take and send photos, record and play audio and video files, connect to
the internet, and do much more. Even though telephone technology has changed a
lot over the years, the language and vocabulary used when making a call has
remained mostly the same.
