1. The main words of the direct speech remain the same when we change it to indirect speech
but the construction of the sentence is different.
2. The pronouns and tense change from direct speech to indirect speech.
Eg: Rita Ma’am said, “I am not taking class today.”
Rita Ma’am said that she was not taking class that day.
3. Inverted commas in direct speech are replaced by the word ‘that’ in declarative sentences
only in reported speech
4. The comma after the main verb (say/said) will disappear. Eg Tom said, “
5. If the direct speech has ‘said to’ it will change to ‘told’ in reported speech. If the direct
speech has ‘says to’ it will change to ‘tell’ in reported speech
Eg: Tom said to Bob, “I love football.”
Tom told Bob that he loved football.
6. Reporting verb ‘said’ is in the past tense so we change the tense of the sentence. The
reporting verb ‘say/says’ is in present tense so we do not change the tense of the sentence.
Eg: He said, “Samarth is a clever boy.”
He said that Samarth was a clever boy.
