GLOBAL TRENDS IN TOURISM DURING THE PANDEMIC

TOURISM IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

By, EY Strategy and Consulting Co., Ltd.- WEBINAR (2023)

“A recurring theme of the webinar is the need to redefine tourism. A “workation” lifestyle,
popularized during the COVID19 pandemic, has made tourism an everyday event. In addition,
emerging digital technologies such as the metaverse have the potential to undermine the
concept of mobility in travel. We need to explore a multilayered concept of tourism which
embraces travel in the metaverse and the real world.”

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE ACCOMMODATION SECTOR

IN TOURISM – A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS
By, Mariela Nekova (2023)

“The significance of review articles has been proved. This type of articles is especially necessary
now, when immediate actions to save an important economic sector must be taken. The
present research aims to determine the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on one of the most
important elements of tourism – the accommodation facilities, through bibliometric analysis. In
order to achieve this goal, the VOSviewer software was used, and data from one of the world’s
largest databases of scientific production – the Web of Science, was collected. The bibliographic
coupling approach was used in the bibliometric analysis. The bibliometric analysis was followed
by content analysis of the most cited studies from each cluster. The effects of COVID-19 on the
accommodation facilities are summarized and classified by groups.”

ANALYSIS OF TOURISM TRENDS AFTER COVID-19

By, Anna Davtyan (2023)
“After the great boom of tourism industries all over the world, by recording approximately 1.5
billion international tourist arrivals in 2019, the unfortunate event of covid-19 changed the
world and accordingly, the boom of the tourism industry. The world faced an unspeakable;
pandemic, which brought losses of numerous lives, and bankruptcy of businesses, including
tourism-related businesses. The economies that depend on tourism (a higher portion of GDPs)
tried to re-open their borders to tourists as soon as the numbers of infected were not major in
their countries. Every and each country had regulations related to procedures regarding arrivals
after covid- 19, trying to minimize the risks and outbreaks of the virus in the country, major
rules were that, tourists had to be vaccinated, take tests a maximum of 48 hours before the
flight, etc…Naturally, tourists would more give priority to checking the location regulations,
hygiene, sanitizing and wearing masks, etc. From the responses of the conducted survey
(Rangsit University 143 international students), it is found that, the youth still has the
willingness to travel, but with a lower budget, compared with the budget before covid-19.
Content and visiting friends and family trips will be popular types of trips after covid-19.
Countries have to develop and focus on making better experiences not only for international
travelers, but also for domestic travelers, as visiting friends and family consists of trips locally
with family and friends.”

DOT, ATTACHED AGENCIES PROMOTE DIGITAL TOURISM

From DOT news (2021)

“With the hampered travel movement brought about by the COVID–19 pandemic
situation, work and play are inevitably done online. The evolving crisis and in anticipation of
other challenges, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and its attached agencies are making sure
that Philippine tourism remains competitive, adapts well and takes advantage of the digital
revolution.”

THE PHILIPPINE TOURISM SECTOR AMID THE PANDEMIC:

DEVELOPMENTS AND PROSPECTS
By, Kristhel Anne M. Caynila, Katherine T. Luna, and Sarah Amabelle A. Milla (2022)
The tourism sector is a key contributor to the resilience of the Philippines’ external payments position and overall
economic development, alongside overseas Filipino (OF) remittances and business process outsourcing. As one of
the country’s biggest employers, it provides various opportunities for businesses and individuals from all segments
of society and supports sustained structural foreign exchange (FX) inflows. But given the contact-intensive nature
of the tourism sector, it has been significantly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, prospects for recovery
in travel services are improving amid accelerated mass inoculation and easing of travel restrictions.

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE PHILIPPINE TOURISM INDUSTRY

By, PWC Philippines- ARTICLE (2020)

“Without a doubt, the tourism industry is among the sectors that have been greatly affected by
the COVID-19 pandemic. The closing of borders, airports, and hotels as well as restrictions on
mass gatherings, land travel and related services across the world put around 100 to 120
million jobs at risk, as estimated by the World Tourism Organization.”

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON PHILIPPINES TOURISM INDUSTRY:

MACROECONOMIC AND MICROECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS
By, Héritier I. Kalonda (2023)

“COVID-19 has harmed lives and businesses locally, regionally, and globally, saying worldwide.
Before the pandemic, tourism supported the Philippines' unstoppable economic growth. The
pandemic slowed it. COVID-19 adversely affected the tourist industry by lowering Global
Domestic Product (GDP) and other key macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators. In other
words, tourism's decline affected macroeconomics and microeconomics indicators. Covid-19's
impact on the tourism sector increased unemployment rate, poverty, household vulnerability
due to income loss, and job losses in transportation, travel agencies, tour guides,
accommodation, food supply, and other sectors. In short, the fall of the tourism industry
affected the economy as a whole, especially in countries like the Philippines that rely on it.”

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN PHILIPPINE TOURISM

AMID THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
By, Deoan D. Andulana, Mayuan T. Calijan, and Albert C. Albina

“This exploratory study aims to discuss the multifaceted challenges and opportunities of
the Philippine tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges and
opportunities are organized by following the elements of anti-pandemic strategies in the
COVID-19 Management Framework. Some pressing challenges are the decline in tourism
demand, layoff of workers, demand for online/digital transactions, avoidance of tourists to
occupy hotel rooms used as quarantine facilities, and compliance of disaster management and
control preparedness protocols. However, tourism industry can thrive through ample
opportunities like exploring local tourism, training employees on digital services and on safety
protocols, rebuilding company brand, improving business facilities, adapting to modern
technology, and collaborating with consultants on disaster and risk management. These
challenges and opportunities provide the bases for suggestions and recommendations to
improve policies for future pandemic planning to cushion any potential impact on the tourism
industry.”

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19

PANDEMIC ON THE SMALL AND LARGE-SCALE TOURISM
SECTORS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
By, Pranjal Kumar and Pratima Ekka (2023)
“The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has affected the tourism sector by closing borders,
reducing both the transportation of tourists and tourist demand. Due to the country-wide
lockdown, most activities in the hotel, motel, restaurant, and transportation sectors have been
postponed. Consequently, the article investigates four research issues by examining the
consequences of global tourism in the private sector before and after COVID-19. As an
analytical method, the article suggested qualitative research methodologies to collect
information from tourism employees. The opinions of the respondents were gathered through
online emails in the questionnaire survey. Further, the article considers people’s future desire
for specific tourism destinations based on visitor arrivals. Forecasting tourist demand is an
essential component of good and efficient tourism management. Consequently, the article
proposes an attention-based long short-term memory model for exact demand forecasting. The
experimental findings reveal that the model’s minimal prediction error accuracy is 0.45%, which
indicates that it has a more robust prediction effect, a faster convergence rate, and a greater
prediction accuracy. Seasonality has emerged as one of the most distinguishing and defining
characteristics of the global tourist business. Accordingly, the article mandated to compare the
seasonal and non-seasonal effects of the tourist sector throughout the years 2020–2021.
Moreover, Governments must analyze the crises’ long-term consequences and, as a result,
define the components that constitute government advantages supplied to the tourist sector
during the pandemic era. As a result, many governmental policies, especially those about social
welfare, may perceive a fresh start during the post-pandemic period, respectively.”

PHILIPPINE MICE TOURISM POST-COVID 19: AN OVERVIEW OF

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
By, Maria Arlene T. Disimulacion (2021)

“The unprecedented impact of the novel corona-virus (COVID-19) adversely affected the
Philippine Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. Optimistic
forecasts and expected increases in arrivals and investments in infrastructure were stifled by
travel restrictions, involuntary quarantine, and social distancing bringing the industry to a
standstill. However, the pandemic offers a unique opportunity to rethink and innovate
strategies to transform MICE tourism. Anchored on the value-chain and stakeholder theories,
this paper argues that recommendations from stakeholders are critical as the industry pivots
into the new normal. Using primary and secondary data, the study reveals that the barriers
include limited MICE infrastructure, intermittent internet connectivity, and non-targeted
marketing campaigns. On the other hand, the study shows that the Philippines can leverage on
its human resources, authentic tourism products, and opportunities for strong collaboration.
Although the respondents were limited to a panel of industry experts, the results of this
exploratory research resonate with similar studies. Further empirical studies may reveal its
feasibility for sustained growth and development in a post-COVID-19 MICE tourism landscape.
Moreover, the pandemic may provide the impetus to further strengthen the collaboration and
partnership between stakeholders across the MICE value chain.”

DEVELOPMENT OF THE PHILIPPINE TOURISM ECONOMY IN

THE POST-COVID PERIOD
By, Julia A. KUZNETSOVA (2023)

“In the Philippines, the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the tourism industry is a
major concern with multiple restrictions in place since 2020. International tourist arrivals fell by
22%, resulting in a loss of approximately US$80 billion in global tourism receipts1. This also
affected the domestic tourism of the Philippines, due to the fact that local tourists also limited
their travel, fearing infection with COVID-19. Since June 2020, the domestic tourism industry
has begun to recover.
The Philippine tourism industry has been an important contributor to the country's GDP for
many years. The share of the tourism sector of the Philippines in Asia's GDP is 11.5% (Fig. 1).
This figure is one of the highest.”

SOCIAL DISTANCING AS A RECONTEXTUALIZATION OF FILIPINO

VALUES AND CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS PRACTICES: A RESPONSE
TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
By, Joseph Renus F. Galang, Jose Ma W. Gopez, Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, and Philip Joseph D.
Sarmiento (2021)

“This paper investigates Catholic religious practices and Filipino values in the Philippines
during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to show that religious practices conducted with proper
social distancing help in the development of a renewed understanding of Filipino values
without contributing to the spread of the virus. This qualitative study makes use of expository
writing and content analysis. First, religious practices before the pandemic marked by
maximum social interaction are presented. Then, the paper shows religious practices during the
pandemic marked by social distancing. Thirdly, the paper looks into how Filipino values are
recontextualized in relation to religious practices despite the need for social distancing during
the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, the researchers claim that those who participate in
religious practices with social distancing do not contribute to the transmission of the virus while
still developing a renewed understanding of Filipino values.”

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON CHURCH GATHERINGS IN THE

PHILIPPINES: A POLICY ANALYSIS
By, Grace Zurielle Malolos, Joseph Christian Obnial, Rena Mallillin, Pamela Bianca Pasco, Erika
Ona, Arianne Andes, Faith Ann Apat, Emma Teresa Carmela Aportadera, Rafael Valencia and
Don Eliseo III Lucero-Prisno (2021)

“The Philippines is the largest Christian-majority country in Asia. With church gatherings
playing a vital role in the nature of Christianity in the Filipino culture, the advent of the
coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the Philippines posed challenges to public religious
practices amid efforts to mitigate COVID-19 community transmission. Various policy
pronouncements from both the government-led InterAgency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging
Diseases and the church-led Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) were issued.
These guidelines were implemented in order to address the two-pronged problem on
healthcare and religious obligations. While these guidelines were initially contributory to the
mitigation of disease transmission, varied compliance by Filipinos was observed through the
progression of the pandemic. Considering the value that church gatherings and religion play in
the lives of the Filipino people, further studies on COVID-19 transmission in the church should
be conducted in order to develop more efficient policies and guidelines on the practice of
religion, particularly for religious gatherings. Furthermore, a more synergistic state and church
cooperation must be encouraged in order to arrive at solutions that will mutually address the
concomitant problems of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
