Measurement of D.C Voltage

AIM: Convert the ammeter into voltmeter to read a suitable voltage.

Theory: The moving coil instrument can be made into a voltmeter by connecting
a resistor R in series as shown in the figure below. The scale may be calibrated to
read directly the voltage applied to the terminals.
The series resistance is called multiplier and is equal to:
𝑽
RS = - Rm ............. (1)
𝑰𝒎
Where:
Im = Full seal deflection current of the moving coil.
Rm = Internal resistance of moving coil.
V = Full range voltage of the instrument.
Rs = Multiplier resistance.

Procedure:
1. For the shown in fig. (1) determine the value of Rs which is required to connect it
with the moving coil to obtain 10v full range voltage. Assuming Rm=2KΩ and Im
2. Connect the circuit shown in fig. (2) and record voltmeter reading.
3.Check the reading obtained from step 2 using another voltmeter on scale 10 v.
Discussion:
1. Derive equation I.
2. Discuss the result obtained.
3. Draw and explain the circuit of multi range voltage.
4. Compare between the readings of the two voltmeters
