Introduction

Menstruation, commonly known as periods is a cycle that happens to women on a monthly basis. The 2-
6 day process includes ejection of blood, tissues and the egg. Every month tissues build up in case of
fertilization. If the fertilization of egg does not take place, having lost their purpose….the lining that’s
build, disintegrates and leaves the body through vagina. This refers to a period.

Objective
Our objective was,

I) To normalize menstruation
II) To create awareness and to remove the barrier that is ignorance
III) To educate the future generation thus preventing stereotypes.

Action plan
Our team (Louie Godsun, Aruvi A.S, B. Lokesh, Subanithyananth, Kavi Prasad, Dinesh Kumar, and
Madhesh) met at Lokesh’s house to discuss our roles in doing the project.

Our roles were,

1) Lokesh and Kavi Prasad did the interview.

2) Madhesh, Dinesh and Subanithyananth collected the data and information from websites.
3) Aruvi and Louie Godsun prepared the questions for interview. They then processed and
compiled the data from websites and interviews and turned it into the final draft.

Questionnaire
 How would you rate your knowledge about the menstrual cycle out of 10?
 Can you tell what a period in one or two sentences?
 Have you ever bought sanitary napkins or any product of that kind for anyone you might know?
 List any 3 brands which sell sanitary and essential products for girls to use while they are on
their menstrual cycle?
 What do you think women expect while they are in their periods?
 “Women usually don’t tell when their cycle starts” how will you find out? What are the main
signs they give out?
 Do you think this is a very comfortable topic to discuss with someone in public?
 How do the people in your family treat this specific topic?
 What would you like to say to the people who get uncomfortable or angry if this specific topic is
brought up to them?

Public Opinion
Young people who were interviewed were very knowledgeable, when asked to rate their knowledge
about menstruation, they rated themselves 7 out of 10

When asked to describe periods in one or two sentences, we received the following replies:

> Happens every month.

> They bleed a lot.

>Immense pain.

>Cramps.

Most men answered that they had not bought a sanitary napkin for a woman. When asked which brands
they prefer, answer was ‘Stay free’, ‘Whisper’ and ‘Care free’

According to men, women need comfortable and cosy environment during periods. They also think it
would be better if they are given some personal space. Sweets also help.

Lastly, most household’s family members respect the topic well, with the exception of few; some think
it’s not something that should be talked about in public, although they don’t talk about the topic, that
doesn’t mean they don’t care. Some think it’s people’s wish to treat this topic well or not.

Team’s Opinion
Our teammates went around interviewing; they almost asked around 60 different men over a span of 4
days… but only managed to get 12 of them to answer for the questions.

To an extent we feel happy that people were willing to open up.

So many men refused to talk about it, which was quite puzzling for us. Because in our opinion the topic
was about a common occurrence, there is nothing wrong about it

“It happens to half of the population for half of their lifetime; it’s absurd not to talk about it

-Dr. Mike (Philosophy)
