Notes
1. This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds (you will not join each round).
2. In this pattern, I begin each circle with “the ch 2 method.” Another way of beginning is to start
with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, do 8 sc (or whatever number is
specified) into your magic circle.
3. Single crochet decrease stitch explanation: Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over.
Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next
stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over
again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
Instructions
Head
With green yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5-8: Sc 30 (30 sts x 4 rounds)
R9: (Sc 14, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (32)
R10: (Sc 7, 2 sc in next st) 4 times (36 sts)
R11: (Sc 4, dec 1) 6 times (30 sts)
R12: (Sc 3, dec 1) 6 times (24 sts)
R13: (Sc 2, dec 1) 6 times (18 sts)
R14: (Sc 4, dec 1) 3 times (15 sts)
R15: (Sc 3, dec 1) 3 times (12 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Finish stuffing the
head, but leave the neck un-stuffed. Your turtle’s head will
now look as shown in Figure 4.
Top Shell
With light brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts) Figure 4: Finished Head and Neck
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (36 sts)
R6: Sc 36 (36 sts)
R7: (Sc 17, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (38 sts)
Wait to fasten off until you have made the bottom shell.
Bottom Shell
With cream yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts) Figure 5: Crocheting the Shell
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (36 sts)
R6: (Sc 17, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (38 sts)
Fasten off, leaving just a short yarn tail for weaving in. Now fit
the bottom cream shell on top of the top light brown shell,
and starting from where you didn’t fasten off the top shell,
single crochet the 2 circles together. See Vid #2 on the Figure 6: Finished Shell
Stuff the shell (Figure 6). Your turtle’s shell is now all ready to
add the turtle! :) Figure 7: Sewing on the Head - 1
To sew the head to the shell, use the green yarn tail left from
the head/neck, and sew it to the opening left on the shell.
Again, see Vid #2 on the Materials page for a video
explanation of sewing the head to the shell. Position the head
sideways in the shell, so the turtle’s face is looking at you
when you look at him from the side. Sew the head to the
BACK LOOPS ONLY of the stitches at the opening of the shell
(Figure 7 & Figure 8). Sew all the way around the opening.
Now, weave the yarn tail through the inside of the shell and
Figure 8: Sewing on the Head - 2
out between R5-R6 of the top shell; then grab a stitch at the
back of the neck at R12-R13 of the head (Figure 9). Insert the
needle back into the same spot of the top shell and pull
tightly to pull the turtle’s neck up against the shell. Do 1 or 2
more stitches to hold the head securely in place, right up
against the body. Secure with a knot and weave in the end.
Your sea turtle will now look as shown in Figure 10.
Instead of fastening off right away (do not stuff), turn and
single crochet 3 sts across the top of the flipper, through both
layers, to close it (Figure 11-A). Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail
for sewing (Figure 12-B).
To sew the flippers to the turtle without seeing your sts, Figure 10: Finished Head and Shell
insert your needle sideways behind the seam between the
top shell and bottom shell, and then into the top sts of the
A B
flipper (Figure 12). See Vid #3 on the Materials page for a
video explanation of sewing on the flippers. Sew the 2 front
flippers 3 sts back from where the neck is sewn to the body.
R3: Sc 7 (7 sts)
R4: Dec 1, sc 5 (6 sts)
As you did with the front flippers, wait to fasten off and do
not stuff. Turn and single crochet 3 sts across the tops of the
flippers, through both layers, to close them. Fasten off,
leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Count 2 sts back from the front
flippers, and sew the back flippers right at the seam between
the top and bottom shell. The back flippers should be 5-6 sts
apart across the back of the turtle’s body. Figure 12: Sewing on the flippers
Tail (optional)
With green yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch (4 sts)
R2: 2 sc in first st, sc 3 (5 sts)
R3: Sc 5 (5 sts)
Wait to fasten off. Do not stuff. Single crochet across the top
of the tail to close it – 2 sc sts across. Fasten off, leaving a
yarn tail for sewing. Sew the tail to the back of the body
(Figure 13). Figure 13: Flippers & Tail Placement
Flipper Freckles
Cut a strand of cream yarn and insert it through the bottom
of a flipper and out through the top. Sew 4-5 little sts on the
top of each front flipper and 4 sts on the top of each back
flipper (Figure 14). You will need to cut a new strand for each
flipper. Secure with a knot and weave in the ends.
This plush sea turtle will not stand on its own, but he can be
held for pictures, propped up with a toothpick, or leaned
Figure 14: Finished Freckles
against a prop for displaying.
And there you go, you are done! Thank you so much for joining
me in making a plush sea turtle! Enjoy!
