What is a textbook?

A textbook is a book that contains comprehensive information about a course or a subject


that a student needs, to get through the academic year.]

textbook is one kind of education book, textbook is books containing descriptions of material
about subject or definite field of study, which is arranged systematically and have been selected
based on specific objectives, learning orientation, and students’ development to be assimilated.

Textbook is a students’ instrument to understand and to learn things which is read and also to
understand the world outside of it.

What does a textbook have?

A textbook is a book that contains comprehensive information about a course or a subject that a
student needs, to get through the academic year. This has a set of chapters, question-answers,
and exercises included in the curriculum to improve the learning standards of a student.

How does a textbook help teachers?

Textbook helps the teacher to provide materials structurally and of course it is made based on
curriculum. Moreover it does not only provide learning materials, but also activities and
evaluation for students.

It is obvious that the function of textbook is as sources and means for teaching and learning
activity that provide the materials. The materials are made based on the curriculum beside that
the textbook is as s means in providing some exercises to students. It can help students to study
or repeat the lesson by themselves.

How does a textbook implement CLT approach?

1. They provide structure and a syllabus for a program.


2. Without textbooks a program may have no central core and learners may not receive a
syllabus that has been systematically planned and developed.
3. They help standardize instruction. The use of a textbook in a program can ensure that the
students in different classes receive similar content and therefore can be tested in the same
way.
4. They maintain quality. If a well developed textbook is used students are exposed to
materials that have been tried and tested, that are based on sound learning principles, and
that are paced appropriately.
5. They provide a variety of learning resources.
6. Textbooks are often accompanied by workbooks, CDs and cassettes, videos, CD ROMs, and
comprehensive teaching guides, providing a rich and varied resource for teachers and
learners.
7. They are efficient. They save teachers’ time, enabling teachers to devote time to teaching
rather than material’s production.
8. They can provide effective language models and input. Textbooks can provide support for
teachers whose first language is not English and who may not be able to generate accurate
language input on their own.
9. They can train teachers. If teachers have limited teaching experience, a textbook together
with the teacher’s manual can serve as a medium of initial teacher training.
10. They are visually appealing. Commercial textbooks usually have high standards of design
and production and hence are appealing to learners and teachers.
11. Economy: A textbook is the cheapest way of providing learning material for each learner.
12. Convenience: A textbook is a convenient package. It is bound, so that it components stick
together and stay in order, it is light and small enough to carry around easily.

These eighteen values are honesty, tolerance, democracy, hard work, creativity, environmental
caring, social caring, discipline, patriotism, nationalism, respect achievement, loving peace,
reading habit, independence, religious, responsibility, curiosity, and friendly/communicative.
