COURSE NAME: GEOINFORMATICS

CREDIT HOURS: Theory = 1
Practical = 1
Total = 2
CONTACT HOURS: Theory = 16
Practical = 48
Total = 64
PREREQUISITE: Nil
MODE OF TEACHING:
Instruction: One hour of lecture per week 50%
Practical/ Laboratory Demonstration: Three hours of Lab work per week 50%
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to familiarise the students of Civil Engineering with the field of Geoinformatics
which has at its core the technologies supporting the processes of acquiring, analysing and visualizing
spatial data. This includes Field Surveying, Photogrammetry, Geographic Information System (GIS),
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Remote Sensing. However in this course the students
will be only studying introductory topics on remote sensing, GIS and GNSS.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To provide working knowledge of Geoinformatics as a modern tool as applicable to civil engineering
projects.

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs):

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:

1 Engineering Knowledge: 7 Environment and Sustainability:

2 Problem Analysis: 8 Ethics:
3 Design/Development of Solutions: 9 Individual and Team Work:
4 Investigation: 10 Communication:
5 Modern Tool Usage: 11 Project Management:
6 The Engineer and Society: 12 Lifelong Learning:

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

S. No CLO Domain Taxonomy PLO
Level
1Demonstrate the ability to comprehend ERDAS Imagine Cognitive 4 5
and Arc GIS software and their usage.
2 Apply the working principles of remote sensing, GIS Cognitive 4 5
and their respective data acquisition technique(s).
3 Illustrate the differences between spatial/non-spatial Cognitive 4 5
data, raster and vector data, spatial analysis and their
applications in GIS environment.
4 Produce GIS solutions for a variety of engineering Psychomotor 4 5
projects by using modern field survey instruments for
data acquisition and processing the acquired Geo-spatial
data using modern GIS and Remote sensing software.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:
Geoinformatics play an important role in providing assistance to various sub fields of Civil Engineering
such as urban planning and land use management, environmental modelling and analysis, traffic
management analysis, flood monitoring, architecture and town planning, irrigation systems, water supply
systems, sewage disposal systems, construction project management, etc. Studying this course would
equip the students to understand the importance of the spatial dimension in assessing, monitoring and
modelling various issues and problems encountered in various Civil Engineering projects not only in
Pakistan but all over the world.
