1. INTRODUCTION

MyLaps Handheld is a result viewer for Orbits3. It allows

you to display results on a Pocket PC (PDA) using a WIFI
network on the track. In order to receive the results you
must be able to connect to the network over which the
results are broadcasted. For more information ask the
organisation of the event you are attending.

1.1 System Requirements

The minimum specifications to use MyLaps Handheld are:
• A Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003 or
better
• A working WIFI connection on your Pocket PC
• About 350-400 KB of free space
• PC with the Microsoft ActiveSync program
installed

1.2 Installing the software

After downloading and unpacking the MyLaps Handheld
program follow the steps below to install the program on
your Pocket PC
• Start the “Autorun.exe” program in order to start
the MyLaps Handheld setup
• Click on “Install MyLaps Handheld” from the menu
“Installation Tasks”
• Follow the instructions of the ActiveSync program

from there. Using the Pocket PC, tap on the copied

2. CONNECTING MYLAPS
HANDHELD

It is assumed that you have a working WIFI connection

within the WIFI network broadcasting the results. If you
do not know how to connect your PDA to a WIFI network,
please consult Appendix A for help.

After starting MyLaps Handheld you will be presented

with the screen below. Click on the button “Connect
automatically” to connect and to start receiving results.

If a connection can not be made automatically you can try

to connect manually, using the option under the button
“Connect Automatically”. Enter the IP address of the PC
sending the results and click the “Connect” button.

6
While the program tries to connect, you will see the
following screen:

As soon as the program is connected, the MyLaps

Handheld homepage is displayed. Here you can monitor
the traffic and items that you receive. From here you can
click on the “Go to the start page” link to view the live
official result screens.

7
After starting and connecting MyLaps Handheld, the
program will always try to (re)connect with the settings
you entered in the first screen (see image on page 6).
When the connection fails (you might be out of the range
of the network) you will no longer receive results but
MyLaps Handheld wil try to reconnect every 10 seconds.
If you want to connect to another network (on another
track) you have to close and restart the program.

As long as you are disconnected you can still view the

results received so far (but results will not be updated).
After reconnecting, the results will be updated again. To
view the current status of the connection you can look at
the icon, left off the menu at the bottom of the screen.
If the icon is blinking blue and white then the program is
connected.

APPENDIX A.
CONNECTING PDA TO
WIFI NETWORK

The exact configuration of your PDA depends on the

version of Windows Mobile and on the type of driver
installed on your Pocket PC (PDA). Please check the
manual of your PDA on how to connect your PDA to
a WIFI network if it does not connects to the network
automatically. Make sure your wireless network card is
(inserted and) enabled. If the network is secured please
ask the responsible person of the event organisation how
to get access to the network.

Below an example is given on how a pda is

generally configured for WIFI:

To connect your PDA to a WIFI network go to the

“Configure Wireless Networks” screen. You can do so
by tapping “start” then “settings” and then selecting the
“connections” tab. Tap on the icon as shown in the screen
below to open the “Configure Wireless Networks” screen.
Select the tab “Wireless” if not already selected.

11
You will be presented with the screen below. Tap and hold
the stylus on the name of the network you want to connect
to. Select the “connect” option in order to connect. Tap on
the name of the network to set the appropriate (security)
settings if applicable. After tapping “ok” the pda will try to
connect to the WIFI network.

12
Additionaly you might have to configure the ip-adress of
the WIFI network adapter. To do so select the “Network
Adapters” tab in the “Configure Wireless Networks”
screen. Make sure the tab “IP Address” is selected. In
most cases the option “Use server-assigned IP adress”
must be selected.

In some cases you might have to use the option “Use

specific IP address” to manually fill in the IP address, the
subnet mask and the default gateway. Ask the responsible
person of the event organisation for the required
settings.
