4.1 Steam at 40°C condenses on the outside of a 3-cm diameter thin horizontal copper tube by
cooling water that enters the tube at 25°C at an average velocity of 2 m/s and leaves at 35°C.
Determine the rate of condensation of steam, the average overall heat transfer coefficient
between the steam and the cooling water, and the tube length
4.2 In a cross flow type heat exchanger with steam condensing inside tubes at 100°C is used to
heat air from 20°C. The air side may be taken as mixed. The effectivenesss of the heat exchanger
is found as 0.7. If the area is 20 m2 and overall heat transfer coefficient (clean) based on this
area is 150 W/m2K, determine the heat transfer rate.
Also determine the extra area required if a fouling resistance of 0.0006 Km2/W is to be allowed
for.
Determine the exit temperature when the clean surface is operated with this excess area
4.3 The evaporator of an air conditioner operates at 5°C. The cooling rate required is 10 kW. Air
at 26°C is to be cooled to 12°C for the conditioning process. The value of overall heat transfer
coefficient is 96 W/m2 K. Determine the area required. The unit is cross flow type with finned
tubes. Assume that condensation does not occur. During mild weather the load reduces to 6
kW. The air flow rate and inlet temperatures remain unaltered. Determine the evaporation
temperature for steady state operation at this load.

4.5. A type 1-1 shell-tube condenser condenses 5000 kg/h of saturated ethanol vapor at normal
pressure with cooling water at 25°C. Liquid ethanol exits the apparatus at a temperature of
60°C. The water leaving the device has a temperature of 40°C. Let the heat coefficient of steam
side (ethanol vapor) is 6000W/m2..K, liquid ethanol side is 3000W/m2K, water side is
2000W/m2K.
The enthalpy of vaporization of ethanol is 38.7 kJ/mol at its boiling point (78.29°C).
4.6 How much water would be required in a jet condenser to condense the vapours from an
evaporator evaporating 5000kgh-1 of water under a pressure of 15cmHg? The condensing water
is available at 18oC and the highest allowable temperature for water discharged from the
condenser is 35oC
4.7. A counterflowing shell tube heat exchanger is used to condense 200kg/h saturated vapor
NH3 at 11.9 at, 950C. The cooling water temperature at the inlet is 150C. Liquid NH3 exists the
equipment at saturated state.
Given the saturated temperature of NH3 at 11,9at is 300C.
a) How much the cooling water is needed if the requirement on minimum temperature
difference between the two fluids is 50C.
b) How much is the temperature of the cooling water exist the equipment,
c) Given the overall heat transfer coefficient in the condensing side is 700 W/m2C, in the
cooling side is 300W/m2C. How much is the total heat surface area of the equipment
