MID SEMESTER EXAMIANTION Date: 24.02.2023
B.Tech. 4th Semester (Civil Engineering)
Subject: Water Resources Engineering
Max. Marks: 30
[Note: Question 1 is compulsory and carries 10 marks. Answe Time: 2 hr.
r any four question from 2 to 6, and each question
carry 5 marks. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.]

1. a) Describe various types and forms of precipitation.

b) What is meant by Probable Maximum Precip itation? Descri be
the methods of estimating PMP.
c) What are the data to be obtained from field measu rements
to determine the discharge by slope-area
method? Explain how the discharge is computed?
e) What are initial losses? How does the interception loss vary
with the magnitude of storm rainfall ?
~ List out the various physiographic factors affectin g runoff. Discus
s their influence on the volume of runoff
end on the time of distribution of runoff.

2. The annual rainfall of 7 raingauges in a basin is 58, 94, 60, 45,

20, 88 and 68 cm respectively. What is
percentage accuracy of the existing network in the estimation
of the average depth of rainfall over the
basin? How many additional gauges are required if it is desired
to limit the error to only 10%?

3. Thiessen polygons constructed for a network of 10 raingauges

in a river basin yielded Thiessen weights of
0!1:0'; 0.16, 0.12, 0.12, 0.11 , 0.09, 0.08, 0.07, 0.11 , 0.06 and 0.10. If the
rainfall s recorded at these gauges
during a cyclonic storm are ~ . 114, 152, 138, 207, 156,
~35, 158, ~63 a~d 150 mm respectlvc, y.
Determ ine the average rainfa ll depth. Also, determ ine the volume
of surface runoff at the basin outlet if
35% of the rainfall is lost as infiltration . Take the area of the
basin as 5800 square km and express your
answer in million cubic metres .

4. In order to compute the flood discharge in a stream by the

slope-area method the following data is
obtained:
u/s Section Middle section dis section
Area (sq m) 108.6 103.1 99.8
Wetted perimeter (m) 65.3 60.7 59.4
Gauge reading (m) 316.8 316.55
Determine the flood discharge assum ing Manning's n= 0.029
and length betwee n u/s and d/s sections as
250 m.

S. A seven hour storm produced the followi ng rainfall intensi

ties (in mm/hr) at half an hour intervals over a
basin of aiea 1830 sq km :
4, 9, 20, 18, 13, 1\ 12, 2, 8, 16, 17, 13, 6 and 1
If the· co~responding observed runoff is 36.6 million m3• estima
te the r/J- index for the storm.

6. A small watershed having an area of 500 hectare in size

has Type C soil. The land cover can be classified
as 45% open forest and 55% agriculture land. Assume AMC
at an average condition , estimate the direct
runoff volume due to rainfall of 30 mm in one day. Use
SCS-CN equation applicable to the Indian
conditions. (Assume CN for Group C soil and open forest as
60 and CN for Group C soil and agricul ture
land as 80).

explanation of Assertion.

1. Assertion A: The repeating variables in dimensional analysis include the dependent variable. 1'

Reason R: The repeating variables should exclude one of the basic dimensions.

2. Assertion A: At the critical state of flow, the specific force is a minimum for the given discharge.
Reason R: for a minimum value of the specific force, the °first derivative of force with respect to depth should be unity.

3. Assertion A: A minor change in the specific energy at or close to critical state will cause a major change in depth.
Reason: R: Froude number being equal to unity characterizes a critical state of flow.

Section B: Fill in the Blanks. (3xl= 3)

4. The relationship between the length scale ratio and th~ velocity scale ratio in hydraulic models, in which Froude dynam ic
similarity is maintained, is.............. ..
5. In a 1/50 model of a spillway, the discharg~ was measured to be 0.3 cumecs. The corresponding prototype discharge in

6. For subcritical flow in an open channel, the control section for gradually varied flow profile is at. .......... ........ ..end.

Section C: Short Answer type: (4 X 1 = 4)

7. What conditions are essential for the formation of hydraulic jump?

8. How many ,r - terms are required to express the functional relationship v_ = f O.,t,a,~ ?
9. What do you understand by the back water effect and afflux? ·
10. Prove that the Froude number is equal to unity in case of critical flow in open channels?

Section D: Answer the followings: (5 X 4 = 20)

11. A. The height of a hydraulic jump in the stilling pool of 1: 25 scale model was observed to be 10 cm. Calculate the
corresponding prototype height of the jump? (2)
B. The viscous resistance F of a sphere of diameter d moving at a constant velocity V through a fluid of density p and
viscosityµ may be expressed as F = (lip) µ2 f(Re). . (2)

12. A hydraulic jump is formed in a 2 m wide rectangular channel which is horizontal and frictionless. The post--jump depth
and velocity are 0.8 m and 1 mis, respectively. Calculate the pre-jump .velocity in mis.

13'. A4 m wide rectangular channel, having bed slope of 0.001 carries a discharge of 16 cumecs. Consider Manning's
roughness coefficient as 0.012. Determine the category of the channel slope.

14.. Arectangular channel 6 m wide carries adischarge of 16 cumecs under uniform flow condition with nom1al depth of 1.60
& Manning's n is 0.Q15. Determine the longitudinal slope of the channel. A hump is to be provided on the channel bed.
ine the maximum height of the hump without affecting th~ upstream flow condition.

wide rectangular channel has the Froude's number before the hydraulic jump equal is 2.2 . If the height of the jump
