MEC 4209: AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING TEST

Question one
A client with a Mercedes Benz E230, 1982 model has tasked Genesis auto
Centre Limited to upgrade the car due to the inefficiencies of several
systems. Below is the diagnosis card by the company mechanic based
on the client's complaints

a) The mechanic would like to know the best options for all the systems
diagnosed. As an automotive Engineer suggest a new system for each
of the systems ensuring that the new system will address the client's
complaint. (10 marks; 2 marks for each)
b) The client has requested for a thorough explanation of how each of
the suggested systems works to address his complaints.
Using diagrams, elaborate to the client how each of the systems works
explaining how its components interact to satisfy his needs.

Question two
A report attached to an invoice from motor care Uganda shows that the
engine power of an automatic Spark Ignition Nissan Murano-V6 model
2018 had reduced to almost that of an in-line Engine type as per the
power stroke readings.
a) Describe the power stroke of this engine and give 2 possible
causes of engine power drop. (5 marks)
b) Geometrically explain why a V-engine produces more power and
torque compared to an in-line type with the same number of
cylinders. (3 marks)
c) Initially a report from McKenzie auto garage showed that the
engine power drop was due to the malfunction of the following
components;
i. Piston rings
ii. Clutch pedal
iii. Master brake cylinder
iv. Injector pump
Give one function of each of the above components on an
automobile and an explanation of how the component could or
could not have led to the engine power drop. (12 marks; 3 marks
each)
