1 INSTALLATION AND HOOKUP

The vacuum filter will be delivered to site fully assembled. The filter skid is secured in place
via 4 hold down bolts secured through the 16mm holes in the lower flange of the skid frame,
2 located on each end. Beyond this, installation will only require the hook up of drain line
piping and connection of the vacuum pump to a power supply.

Liquids drain connections are located at the 40NB isolation valve at the bottom of the sump
on the vacuum filter main body, the drain valve on the overflow vessel (optional connection)
and the bund drain spigot (typically using beverage tube to a safe location) to collect any
overflow from the overhead feed hopper.

2 VACUUM FILTER OPERATION

2.1 PRE-OPERATIONS CHECKS

The following steps should be performed prior to operating the vacuum filter;

The following steps should be performed prior to operating the vacuum filter;

1. Ensure that the hopper is properly located above the vacuum filter main body.
2. Ensure correct vacuum pump oil level (Refer to Becker Operator Instructions) and
connection to a suitable power supply.

2.2 VACUUM FILTER PRESS OPERATION

For initial start up complete steps 1 – 9

1. Remove any liquid build up via drain valve on moisture trap on pump inlet (close when
empty).
2. Remove any liquid in main tank body via drain valve on side at the base (close when
empty).
3. Lift off both the slurry containing ring and the filter support rings. Smear a thin layer of
vacuum grease to the horizontal seal on main tank and replace the filter support ring
onto the main tank.
4. Place the Stainless Steel mesh support onto the filter support making sure the mesh sits
flat against the horizontal ring support.
5. Cut and fit the woven cloth making sure you cover the mesh completely (up to the
vertical edges to assist the sealing).
6. Cut and fit the required paper to completely cover the cloth as above.
7. Replace the (top ring) gold slurry retaining ring over the sheet paper and into the recess
of the filter support.
8. Smear a thin layer of vacuum grease around the girth of the tank where the top ring
meets the filter support.
9. Ensure the drain valve is closed on the overhead hopper then carefully introduce the
material to be dewatered into the hopper taking care not to overflow it.
10. Turn on the vacuum pump ensuring it is operating correctly.
11. Partly fill the top gold slurry retaining ring from the feed hopper maintaining an even layer
across the filter.
12. It is unadvisable to leave the pump unattended and do not forget to turn off the pump
when the moisture removal is complete.
13. Remove the dewatered cake from the filter

Repeat the operation No’s. 5 – 13 as required and draining the main tank at regular intervals.

Note: The thicker the layer of media the longer the pump will take to remove the moisture.

3 VACUUM FILTER MAINTENANCE

3.1 MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES

The PFWA vacuum filter is a relatively simple and robust equipment item and should provide
long life with only minor maintenance intervention. The following activities should be
performed at regular intervals. The nominated frequencies may be increased or decreased
depending on usage;

Daily checks;
1. Check vacuum pump oil level

Monthly checks;
1. Change out vacuum pump oil (use Shell Corena V). Refer to Becker Operator
Instructions) for details and comment on recommended frequency.
2. Clean vacuum pump fan cover, fan grill, cooling ribs and external surfaces to prevent
overheating.
3. Check condition of seals vacuum filter O-Ring seals and replace as required.
4. Check condition of the 316 SS mesh, filter cloth and filter paper and replace any filter
elements, as required.
5. Ensure that all isolation valves provide positive isolation and repair or replace as
required.

3.2 SPARE PARTS

PFWA should be contacted for supply of vacuum filter spare parts and spare parts pricing
and delivery will be advised at the time of order. The descriptions of standard spare parts
items are detailed in Attachment 2.

4 TROUBLESHOOTING

1. Vacuum pump does not start

• Check for correct hook-up to power supply and that power is turned on.

2. Vacuum filter does not operate effectively

• Check vacuum pump oil level
• Check that vacuum hopper is correctly seated and that O-Rings are in good
condition
• Check that all drain isolation valves are isolated
• Check for any fractures in the vacuum piping
• Check that liquids are drained from the overflow vessel and the filter sump
and ensure that liquids have not been carrying over to the vacuum pump.

3. Vacuum pump overheats

• Check that the filter elements are in good condition and aren’t obstructing air
flow
• Check for obstructions in the vacuum lines
• Check that vacuum pump fan cover, fan grill, cooling ribs and external
surfaces are not fouled.
