Summary

Tairn's voice in Violet's mind was a deadly growl.

"Adapt or die." Tairn's voice in Violet's mind was a deadly growl. "They will adapt the
lessons to you, Silver One, or I will kill them."

Violet walked around to Tairn's head, not flinching from the flash of his sharp teeth. "You
have to let me choose my own battles."

"Not the battles you fight while on my back. You are my rider to protect." She was his, and
Andarna's as well. Violet might never literally be Andarna's rider, but Andarna too was
bonded to her. Andarna had to remain hidden in the Vale for the sake of every feathertail, for
every egg that held a vulnerable hatchling.

Tairn had not only his own protectiveness of Violet, but the excuse of taking on Andarna's
share as well while Andarna slept. More protectiveness than Violet could stand, a lot of the
time. More than Violet needed, but Tairn weighed matters differently.
