CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

The activity of understanding is an activity carried out by humans in their lives

with other humans to understand each other and value. Understanding the song is not
just understanding but including understanding the objectivity and meaning contained
in a song. A process of understanding the song is a process of identification about
songs. If from the beginning we didn't understand the content of the song we used in
the discussion, then our conversation will be undirected. In this case, understanding
and interpretation in the context of this appreciation which we will make the topic or
research material. Thus the understanding and or interpretation of the song in the
context of appreciation is the main key that needs to be understood from the start. It
seems like an easy way to understand a song in context music appreciation let alone to
be able to interpret it but it is not easy for someone to understand well even for
interpreting a song.
Music is one of the human cultures, used in music various human interests
including entertainment, religious rituals, healing therapy, advertising, self-
expression, cultural celebrations, and so on. The existence of music itself in its history
to date along with its musical idioms and the technological linkages that accompany
it, there is a various variety of packaging, shapes, and styles. Specifically the
existence of popular music too influenced by the industrialization and
commercialization that began in America and England in the 1920s. The phenomenon
of the development of popular music is in line along with the development of audio-
visual media. The music charts contain songs from a variety of sources,
including classical, jazz, rock, and novelty songs. Although much of the music that
appears on record charts is seen as pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart
music.
Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the
mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. The terms popular music
and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all
music that is popular and includes many disparate styles. During the 1950s and 1960s,
pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced.
Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which
pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and
accessible.
One of the modern pop musicians who caught the writer's attention is Justin
Beiber. Justin Drew Bieber is a Canadian singer and songwriter born on March 1,
1994, in London, Ontario, in St. Joseph Hospital and grew up in Stratford, Ontario.
After talent manager Scooter Braun discovered him through YouTube videos of him
covering songs in 2008 and he was signed to RBMG, Bieber released his debut EP,
My World, in late 2009. The EP was certified platinum in the US. Bieber became the
first artist to have seven songs from a debut record on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Bieber released his first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, in 2010. The album
debuted at or near number one in several countries, being certified three times
platinum. in the US, and produced the single "Baby".
The “Ghost” earned Bieber his 26th top-ten hit and made him hold the 11th-
most top-ten entries in the chart's history. It additionally became his longest climb to
reach the top ten, surpassing the 18-week ascent of Skrillex and Diplo's "Where Are
Ü Now", featuring Bieber, in 2015. "Ghost" achieved its highest chart position in
Singapore, reaching number one.
The author himself took the song "Ghost" as research material because the
song seemed to fit the circumstances or situation the author was facing at that time. Of
course, the song has a very deep meaning, especially how important it is to gather
together with the closest people, such as friends from school. Before regretting it later
after they left.

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL REVIEW

2.1 Theoretical Description

In this section, there would be some definitions and concepts related to the
theories in this study. The theories are the definition of Interpretation, music and
songs, songs function, and lyric analysis.

2.2 Interpretation
Interpretation is the art of indirectly depicting, however communication can be
easily understood. Interpretation is closely related to the range that must be achieved
by the subject and at the same time simultaneously re-expressed as the identity of the
structure contained in the life, history, and objectivity (Kaelan: 1998).
Interpretation or often referred to as interpretation is a process of
communication through words or gestures between two or more people who cannot
use the same symbols, either simultaneously (known as simultaneous interpretation)
or sequential (known as sequential interpretation). according to the definition,
interpretation is only used as a method if needed. If the object of the work of art is
quite clear in its meaning, the object will not invite anyone's interpretation. The term
interpretation itself can refer to the process of interpretation which in progress or
results. An interpretation can be part of a presentation or representation of information
that is modified to suit a specific set of symbols. The information can be spoken,
written, pictured, or other forms of language. Complex meanings can arise when the
interpreter whether consciously or not, cross-references an object by placing it in a
broader framework of experience and knowledge. Destination interpretation is usually
to increase understanding.

2.3 Song Lyric

The lyrics of the song have similarities with the rhyme, only in that Song
lyrics also have their specialty because of the pouring of ideas through the lyrics of
the song reinforced by the melody and the type of rhythm that adjusted to the lyrics of
the song and also the color of the singer's voice. Not only concerned with the melody
and vocal sound but the lyrics of the song are also full of meaning.

According to Noor (2004: 24) lyrics are an expression of the feelings of an

author. These lyrics came to be known as poetry, namely literary works that contain
the expression (outpouring) of personal feelings which prioritizes how to express it,
while art especially song is part of the culture. According to Muliono (Ed) (2007):
678) there are two meanings of lyrics, namely (1) literary works (poetry) that contain
an outpouring of personal feelings, (2) composition of a song. When making lyrics, a
poet or songwriter must be good at processing a word.

Lyric of “Ghost” by Justin Bieber

Youngblood thinks there's always tomorrow

I miss your touch on nights when I'm hollow
I know you crossed a bridge that I can't follow

Since the love that you left is all that I get

I want you to know that if I can't be close to you
I'll settle for the ghost of you
I miss you more than life (More than life)

And if you can't be next to me

Your memory is ecstasy
I miss you more than life
I miss you more than life

Youngblood thinks there's always tomorrow (Woo)

I need more time, but time can't be borrowed
I leave it all behind if I could follow

Since the love that you left is all that I get

I want you to know that if I can't be close to you
I'll settle for the ghost of you
I miss you more than life, yeah

And if you can't be next to me

Your memory is ecstasy
I miss you more than life
I miss you more than life
Whoa, oh, oh-oh
More than life
Oh-oh

So if I can't get close to you

I'll settle for the ghost of you
I miss you more than life

And if you can't be next to me

Your memory is ecstasy
I miss you more than life
I miss you more than life

2.4 Lyric Analysis

According to Jan Van Luxemburg (1989), the definition of song lyrics or
lyrics can be considered poetry and vice versa and appropriate, such as the definition
of texts Poetry does not only suffice for the types of literature but also expressions
that advertisements, proverbs, slogans, prayers, and song lyrics. Based on theories
about the analysis and lyrics above, we can know that lyric analysis is an activity
carried out to peel, parse, review or discuss the lyrics of the song to find all the
elements, purposes, and functions contained in the lyrics of the song.
