2004 INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI

• The 2004 Earthquake was one of the deadliest natural disasters.

• It had a deadly magnitude of 9.1-9.3 with an epicenter of Sumatra
in Indonesia.
• It triggered a series of devastating tsunamis that affected coastal
areas around the Indian Ocean like in countries like the Eastern
Coast of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc.
• It had was caused by a deadly earthquake leading to a tsunami or
tidal wave.
EFFECTS OF THE TSUNAMI

• The tsunami was responsible for most of the impacts, which were
observed in 17 countries in Africa and Asia. 227,899 were killed or
missing and presumed dead
• About 1.7 million people were displaced. Total damage was estimated at
roughly $13 billion (2017 dollars) with Indonesia being the hardest hit
country
• Waves and wave-carried debris devastated once-thriving communities
having punitive effects. And the inundation of saltwater damaged soils
affecting agriculture.
• Together, the earthquake and tsunami changed the landscape of many
Indian Ocean coastal communities. Coastal erosion and subsidence
caused some shorelines to disappear into the ocean and affected coastal
reefs.
ACTION PLAN OF TSUNAMI

• The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) was established

in 2007 at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services
under the Ministry of Earth Sciences after the Tsunami. It gives
updates and warnings round the clock everyday
• Apart from early warning services, the warning center at INCOIS is
preparing for tsunamis through regular workshops, training,
seminars and tsunami mock drills in India. INCOIS also offers
awareness material such as leaflets and short films in many
languages
DATA OF THE TSUNAMI

• The tsunami contained twice the energy of all the bombs utilized
throughout World War II.
• The earthquake that caused the tsunami lasted almost 10 minutes.
• The tsunami resulted in about $10 billion of property damage and
other material losses.
• It causes death to almost 2,30,000 to 2,80,000 people
• It also caused huge monetary losses approximately to be 10 billion
