Where is Kaikoura?
 2 deaths
 a magnitude of 7.8
 economic damage was 1.5
billion USD
 The seismic effects were felt
as far away as the capital city,
Wellington, which is
located approximately
200 kilometers from
the epicenter
Rescue Teams
 There were many organizations that went to help
 New Zealand Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)
was one of them, This organization had highly
trained personnel specializing in urban search
and rescue operations. They are equipped with
specialized tools and equipment to locate and
find all the people trapped in collapsed buildings
or other structures.
 Medical personnel were sent to those in need to
help those, , effected and injured during the
earthquake.
 Figher fighters were also sent to look and help
if any fire started because the earthquake
 DIfferent volunteer organizations and community
groups offered assistance with search and rescue
operations. They helped clean up.

Transportation
 The earthquake triggered landslides and rockfalls, blocking
roads and highways throughout the affected regions. Many
roads were impassable due to cracks or structural damage,
making travel dangerous or impossible.
 The earthquake damaged railway lines, including the Main
North Line, which connects the South Island's major cities, it
was unsafe for trains to work
 Some major bridges were damaged and
needed extensive repair or reconstruction.
 Airports weren't very damaged however some flights had to be
cancelled due to airtrafic control or runway inspections.
 Some communities, particularly those faraway or coastal areas,
have been temporarily cut off from the rest of the country due
to damaged transport infrastructure. This isolation created
challenges for emergency response and care.
In response to these transportation challenges, emergency
responders and government agencies worked quickly to assess
damage, clear debris, and restore access to affected areas.

Medical facilities
 The earthquake resulted in damage to several
hospitals and healthcare facilities in the
affected regions, including Marlborough and
Canterbury. Some hospitals experienced
structural damage, while others faced issues
such as power outages, water supply
disruptions, and equipment damage.
 Medical staff at hospitals and clinics worked
tirelessly to provide care to those injured
during the earthquake.
 In some cases, patients had to be evacuated
from damaged healthcare facilities to ensure
their safety and access to appropriate medical
care
 Ambulance services and emergency medical
teams were deployed to provide first aid and
transport patients to medical facilities for
further treatment

Strength of buildings

• Many modern buildings in New Zealand, especially

those constructed in recent years, are designed
and constructed by engineers using advanced
structural analysis and construction techniques. These
buildings are engineered to distribute seismic forces
efficiently and resist damage during earthquakes.
• In places where there are old buildings, they might do
some changes to make them better at
handling earthquakes. They can make the structure
stronger, add extra support walls, and make the
connections between different parts of the building
stronger to make it more stable.

Availability of money

 The earthquake likely caused disruptions to

business operations, including retail stores, banks,
and other financial institutions.
 individuals and businesses affected by the
earthquake would have filed insurance claims to
cover damages to property and assets.
 The New Zealand government typically provides
assistance and financial support to individuals,
businesses, and communities affected by natural
disasters.
 The earthquake's impact on local economies,
particularly in the tourism and agricultural sectors,
may have affected income levels and employment
opportunities for residents in affected areas.
 9.6/10
aftercare

 Rebuilding and fixing things were

the main goals of the
reconstruction efforts. They wanted
to make sure that the damaged
roads, bridges, and buildings were
repaired so that people could
recover and be safe.
 They also made plans to help the
communities get back on their feet
and make them better than before.
The government, non-profit
organizations, businesses, and
people in the community all
worked together to make sure that
each community's needs were met.
 It took 2 billion USD to reconstruct
buildings, public places,
hospitals etc.
