Artillery missile system ground / ground LANCE (Bw)

(schu) - In 1962, the US Army began developing the LANCE weapon system as a successor to the HONEST JOHN weapon
system. At the same time, the development of a range-enhanced version of the weapon system began in 1966, which in 1967
was determined to be the sole successor to the HONEST JOHN and SERGEANT.

In 1976/1977, as a replacement for the HONEST JOHN and SERGEANT artillery missile systems, the Bundeswehr
introduced a total of 26 systems with 175 missiles in the rocket artillery battalions of the artillery command of the Corps and in
the rocket artillery battalion of the 6th PzGrenDiv. Each ArtRakBtl had 4 launchers. LANCE was retired in 1992.
In addition to various management and logistics components, the LANCE system includes:

Carrier vehicle M 752 (modified M 667 with lockable drive) and the removable starting frame M 782 and portable
measuring, testing and programming devices for the missile,
Loading and transport vehicle M 688 with 1.8t crane for preassembling and moving the rocket to the launcher and for
transporting 2 rockets
uniaxial transport trailer M740 with conversion kit M234 and launch frame for transporting and launching the rocket.

The M 752 guided rocket launcher consists of the modified US carrier vehicle M 667 and the removable launch frame M 782.
A special feature is the electro-hydraulic drive locking system, which blocks the spring movement of the caster swing arms
and ensures the necessary stability of the vehicle during loading or use as a launch vehicle.
The M 688 loading and transport vehicle, like the M 752 launch vehicle, is derived from the M 113. The loading space of the
guided missile launcher is 3200 mm long, 2430 mm wide, 1260 mm high and accommodates the transport and loading
equipment with a hydraulically operated 1900 kp crane. Two partially or fully assembled missiles can be transported.

The single-stage, wing and spin stabilized missile with a length of 6170 mm and a diameter of 650 mm weighed 1300 kg. The
missile, equipped with 670 kg of liquid fuel and a 454 kg warhead, had an operational range of 10-110 km at supersonic
speed.
A rocket could also be fired with the towed single-axis guided missile launcher M 740 and the transport kit M 234 for mounting
the launch frame.
