Cynthia Herrera 3/2/2024

Hello,

My name is Ms. Herrera. I am your child’s special education teacher. This is my first
year as a teacher but my 6th year working in the district.

I went to Harlandale High School where I was in colorguard for 4 years. I am a first
generation college graduate. I went to San Antonio College where I received 2
associates, one in photography and the other journalism. I was the Editor in Chief for
The Ranger, the college newspaper. I was also the assisting managing editor. After
graduating from SAC, I transferred to Texas A&M San Antonio where I received my
Bachelor of Arts in Communications. I graduated Summa Cum Laude, highest honors. I
was also a part of the university online newspaper, The Mesquite. During my senior
year in college I started substitute teaching, working my way from elementary to high
school. I found my calling at the high school level and I was a long term math teacher
for sophomores. After this I was hired as a Campus Monitor for 2 years before finally
finishing my alternative certification and now in the classroom with your child!

Time is precious and my first classroom procedure is to follow directions immediately.

This ensures things are done smoothly and no one is left behind. My second most
important procedure is to actively participate in class. This gives your student an
opportunity to show the class how brilliant they are. Last but not least, to be respectful
and if there’s an issue, ask to speak in private. Working as a monitor, I didn’t always see
the best behavior, but with working with these students, most of the time I noticed that
there was an underlying reason for the behavior. Students have feelings, and that is
okay. I want them to be comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. If it’s something
that I did, I would like them to get it off their chest and share it with me because if their
mind is on that incident, then I know they aren’t using their mind on the lesson.

I want my students to succeed. I will give students the opportunity to redo assignments
as many times as they need. I do ask that everything is on time. Communication is key,
if there is something going on outside the classroom that the student has a hard time
completing the assignment on time, let me know. I can make adjustments and
accommodations. Communication is important for me. If you need to reach me, you can
always call the main office and leave a note. I also respond to emails during work hours.
Students can make an appointment to meet with me before or after school.

I look forward to working with your child this year!

Sincerely,
Ms.Herrera
