FASTENERS
Answer all questions. Use sketches to aid your answers where applicable.

1. Define the term “mechanical fastener” (2 marks)

A mechanical which holds two are more parts of machine of a structure.

2. Name three mechanical fasteners. (2 detachable and 1 Non-detachable) (4 marks)

Detachable- Screws & Bolts
Non- Detachable- Rivets

3. Discuss four thread forms (discuss means elaborate stating purpose/uses and showing
by sketches how they look) (12 marks)
Square Threads
These threads have their flanks at right angles to the axis offers less resistance to the
motion, generally used for power transmission.

Acme Threads
Modified from the square threads. The thread angle is 26 degrees. These threads are
particularly used in cases where the engagements and disengagements are frequent.

Knuckle Threads
Modified from square threads rounded at top to bottom. These threads are used in electric
bulbs, bottles, railway couplers etc….
Buttress Threads
Combined form of V threads and square threads. It combines the low frictional resistance of the
square threads and the strength of V threads used for power transmission in one direction only.

4. Make a neat and fully labeled sketch of a Bolt. (6 marks)

5. Make a neat and fully labeled sketch of a parting of a metric thread. (show the pitch,
crest, diameters, etc) (10 marks)
6. a) Define lead. (2 marks)
Lead is the distance moved by a nut or bolt in the axial direction in one complete
revolution.

b) If the pitch of the double-start thread is 1.25mm, calculate its lead. (2 marks)
Lead= n x Pitch
= 2 x 1.25mm = 2.5mm

c) If the pitch of the triple-start thread is 0.75mm, calculate its lead. (2 marks)
Lead= n x Pitch
= 3 x 0.75
= 2.25mm

TOTAL MARKS = 40
