What I Need to know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the components of a scientific investigation. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of
the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
MELC: Describe the components of a scientific investigation.
CODE: K to 12 BEC CG: S7MT-Ia-1
The module consist of one lessons namely:
 Lesson – Components of a Scientific Investigation and Scientific Investigation
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. define scientific method;
2. enumerate the components of a scientific investigation/ scientific method;
3. explain components of a scientific investigation;

Lesson Components of a Scientific

1 Investigation
We may not know but every day, we are doing a scientific investigation or at
least we are applying some principles of scientific investigation in our daily life. As
we wake up in the morning we observe things. Some of these things make us
wonder. Normally, we try to investigate and answer this wonderment especially
about things which concern us.

What’s In
In Grade 6 you have performed activities like science simple experiments. For
example, you mixed salt and water. In the process of mixing, you have observed that
the resulting salt-water mixture is homogeneous mixture because it looks uniform
in appearance. The solid was completely dissolve in liquid and cannot be seen. We
cannot see the salt anymore because the water molecules have blinded to the salt
molecules. You conclude now that the salt dissolves in water, or salt is soluble in
water. What is the role of experiments in scientific inquiry? In this lesson, you will
define what scientific investigation is and describe its components.

What’s New

Scientific Investigation Defined

Scientific investigation is the how scientists and researchers use a systematic
process to answer questions about the world around us. It is a way of finding the
answer to a question using carefully arranged steps. In other words, the scientific
method is a systematic process that involves measurable observations to formulate,
test or modify and prove a hypothesis.
In conducting a scientific investigation, the scientific method is used. This
method includes a series of logical steps. Let us do Activity 1 to reveal the steps.
Activity: Arrange Me!
Directions: Below are steps in scientific investigation, arrange the following steps
in the proper order. Write numbers 1-7 (1 being the first step and 7 as the last step).
Use another sheet of paper for your answer.
____________a. Observe
____________b. Test the hypothesis
____________c. Identify the problem
____________d. Arrive at a conclusion
____________e. Communicate the result
____________f. Organized and analyzed the data
____________g. Make a hypothesis / tentative answer

What is it
Scientific investigation is also known as scientific inquiry. Scientists are, by nature,
keen observers that is why they can easily perceive areas where problems exist. Having
identified the problem, scientist undertakes a carefully planned investigation following a
systematic and logical approach using steps in the scientific method.
The figure below shows the steps in Scientific Investigation.

13
Steps in Scientific Investigation
1. Observation

The first process in the scientific method involves the observation

of a phenomenon, event, or “problem.” The discovery of such a
phenomenon may occur due to an interest on the observer’s part, a
suggestion or assignment, or it may be an annoyance that one https://www.google.com/searc

wishes to resolve. ahUKEwiOx-

The second step in scientific investigations is to identify a

problem in a given situation. This problem comes when a nt=img&ei=JPrYYI6lAoqMr7wP

Educated is highlighted because no good hypothesis can be
developed without research into the problem. In other words, you

will give temporary solutions to the identified problem.
4. Testing the Hypothesis/ Experiment
The next scientific step you are going to is to test your
hypothesis. Some hypothesis may be tested simply by further
observations or take an elaborate and tedious process as in the
experiment.

A. Independent variable
An independent variable is a variable
that represents a quantity that is being
manipulated in an experiment.
B. Dependent variable
A dependent variable represents a
quantity whose value depends on how
the independent variable is
manipulated.
C. Controlled Variable
A controlled variable or constant
variable is a variable that does not
change during an experiment.

5. Organize and Analyze Data
After performing an experiment and collecting data, one must
analyze the data. Research experiments usually analyzed data with

statistical software in order to determine the relationships among the
data gathered. In the case of a simpler experiment, one would look at
the data and see how they show a relationship.

6. Draw Conclusions – The next step of scientific investigation is to

form a conclusion. If the data support the hypothesis, then the
hypothesis is correct and may be the explanation for the phenomena.
www.clipartk If the data do not support the hypothesis, then more observations
ey.com must be made, a new hypothesis is formed, and the scientific
investigation is used all over again.

7. Communicate Results - When a conclusion is drawn, the

research can be presented to others to inform them of the
findings and receive input about the validity of the conclusion
drawn from the research.
