QUARTER 1 – MODULE 1
(Week 1)
SCIENTIFIC
METHOD
What I Need to know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the components of a scientific investigation. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of
the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
MELC: Describe the components of a scientific investigation.
CODE: K to 12 BEC CG: S7MT-Ia-1
The module consist of one lessons namely:
Lesson – Components of a Scientific Investigation and Scientific Investigation
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. define scientific method;
2. enumerate the components of a scientific investigation/ scientific method;
3. explain components of a scientific investigation;
What I know
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the chosen letter on
a separate sheet of paper.
1. In a scientific investigation, what is the possible answer to the problem?
A. conclusion B. data C. experiment D. hypothesis
2. During an experiment about a coin and feather that were dropped at the same time,
it was found that the coin reached the ground first. One student said: “Maybe, the
coin is heavier than the feather.” What do you call this kind of statement?
A. a problem B. a hypothesis C. an interpretation D. conclusion
3. Which of the following statements is true of the scientific method?
A. People structure their lives on the principle of scientific method.

C. The scientific method is a continuous process by which people learn about his
world.
D. When the results of the experiment do not fit the hypothesis, a scientist may
discard the results and stop the experiment.
4. In the scientific method, before conducting any experiments, it is necessary to
_________.
A. make discoveries C. draw conclusions.
B. form a hypothesis. D. collect results.
5. The part of an experiment that is not tested and is being used for comparison.
A. control group C. dependent variable
B. constant D. independent variable
6. What do you call the information collected during an experiment?
A. variable B. observation C. hypothesis D. data
For questions 7-9, refer to the information below
Jacob wants to know the effect of temperature on the rate of the solid dissolved in
water. She decided to set up an experiment to find out.
11
7. What would be Jacob’s statement of the problem?
A. Does coffee dissolve faster in cold or hot water?
B. What would happen if you drink hot coffee?
C. Will coffee taste much bitter in cold temperature?
D. Does water volume affect the quality of coffee drink?
8. Which of the following would be the dependent variable in the experiment of
Jacob?
A. Dissolving amount C. Coffee variant
B. Water temperature D. Dissolving time
9. At the end of the experiment, Jacob stated that coffee dissolves faster in hot
water than in cold water. What does this statement signify?
A. An observation B. A hypothesis C. A conclusion D. A question
10. Celso read about growing plants in water. He wanted to determine how
plants could grow without soil. What step of scientific method is being
described?
A. Observation C. hypothesis
B. Experiment D. Conclusion
What’s In
In Grade 6 you have performed activities like science simple experiments. For
example, you mixed salt and water. In the process of mixing, you have observed that
the resulting salt-water mixture is homogeneous mixture because it looks uniform
in appearance. The solid was completely dissolve in liquid and cannot be seen. We
cannot see the salt anymore because the water molecules have blinded to the salt
molecules. You conclude now that the salt dissolves in water, or salt is soluble in
water. What is the role of experiments in scientific inquiry? In this lesson, you will
define what scientific investigation is and describe its components.

What’s New
What is it
Scientific investigation is also known as scientific inquiry. Scientists are, by nature,
keen observers that is why they can easily perceive areas where problems exist. Having
identified the problem, scientist undertakes a carefully planned investigation following a
systematic and logical approach using steps in the scientific method.
The figure below shows the steps in Scientific Investigation.
13
Steps in Scientific Investigation
1. Observation
Assessment
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. In a scientific investigation, which is the tentative answer to the problem?
A. conclusion B. data C. experiment D. hypothesis
15
2. The mother of Aaron wanted to find out the effect of organic fertilizer in the
growth of pechay plant. What are the steps she needs to follow in order to
find out the effect of fertilizer on the plant’s growth?
A. conduct an experiment, form a hypothesis, make a conclusion, record
data , ask a question
B. observe, ask a question, form a hypothesis, conduct an experiment,
record data, make a conclusion
C. form a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, record data, make a
conclusion, ask a question
D. record data, form a hypothesis, make a conclusion, conduct an
experiment , observe, ask a question
3. The scientific investigation begins with ________.
A. sharing findings to others
B. asking the opinion of others
C. an observation of events around us
D. digging of information over the internet
4. During an experiment about a coin and feather that were dropped at the same
time, it was found that the coin reached the ground first. One student said:
“Maybe, the coin is heavier than the feather.” What do you call this kind of
statement?
A. a problem C. an interpretation
B. a hypothesis D. conclusion
5. Vincent saw bats catching insects after dark. He asked, “How do bats find
the insects in the dark?” What does this statement signify?
A. Observation C. conclusion
B. Experiment D. question
6. What do you call the information collected during an experiment?
A. data B. observation C. hypothesis D. variable
For questions 7-9, refer to the information below
During the bread and pastry class of Russel, he watched closely as her teacher
demonstrated how to prepare bibingnka or rice cake. She noticed that her teacher
added yeast. She asked her teacher, “Teacher Ana what is the use of yeast?”
Teacher Ana replied, “The yeast will make the bibingka rise. It will release gas as
it is feed on sugar.” Russel wonders if the amount of sugar will affect the size of
the bibingka.
