I. SHORT INTRODUCTION/DESCRIPTION OF THE MOVIE

Living with agoraphobia can be very debilitating, as it can severely limit a person’s
ability to participate in everyday activities. The movie entitled “The Woman in the Window”
follows the story of the Agoraphobic Doctor, Anna Fox, who suffers from Anxiety following a
traumatic life event.

Anxiety is a mental health disorder that affects many people worldwide. Anxiety
disorders are characterized by excessive fear and worry and related behavioral
disturbances. Symptoms are severe enough to result in significant distress or significant
impairment in functioning. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), anxiety
disorders are the most common mental health illness worldwide, affecting approximately 1 in
13 people.

On the other hand, Agoraphobia, is a type of anxiety disorder that involves an intense
fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult or help might not be available in
the event of a panic attack. Traumatic events or life changes, such as the loss of a loved one
or a divorce, can trigger the onset of agoraphobia.

Treatment for agoraphobia usually involves a combination of therapy and medication.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help individuals identify and change negative
thought patterns that contribute to their anxiety. Exposure therapy is also commonly used,
where individuals gradually face their fears in a controlled environment. Medications such as
antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs can also be prescribed.

II. SUMMARY/PLOT

Child Psychologist Anna Fox has a condition called Agoraphobia that inhibits her to
go out of her home. This condition led her to observe the activities of the people in their
neighborhood including the Russell family who have just transferred into the neighborhood.
One evening Anna befriends Jane Russell and they tell stories about each other while
drinking wine. Anna then witnesses the abusive behavior of the Russell family’s head,
Alistair, who she suspects to be responsible for the murder of her friend Jane. She then
contacts the police to report the crime that she had just witnessed. It was also at this scene
that Anna went out of her home to try to save her friend from being killed. As the scene
progresses, Anna was confronted by the Russells, and she was in complete shock after
discovering that the Jane she was referring to was a complete different person. Anna begins
spying in the Russells again which led to a huge turn out of events.

As a result of Anna’s spying to her neighbors, she then receives an email containing
a photo of her sleeping. She calls the detectives once again, and Anna suffers from an
emotional breakdown in front of the detectives, the Russells, and her tenant, David. It was
also at this scene were it was revealed that her husband and daughter died tragically one
winter night when she was driving. Anna was the sole survivor of the said incident, which
resulted to her Anxiety and Agoraphobia. As Anna was having a nervous breakdown, the
detectives mentioned that her therapist stated that Anna’s medications causes her to have
hallucinations and conversations with people who are not physically present. Anna
apologizes to the Russell family and admits that she was at fault. Anna then stops pursuing
evidences for her suspicions and plans to commit suicide by overdosing herself with the
medications she is taking.

As Anna was looking through the photos on her laptop, she sees the reflection of
Jane, thereby proving that their interaction was real and not fabricated by the medications
thought to have caused hallucinations. She then shows David the photo and she was
shocked by David’s revelations about who Jane really is. David revealed that the “Jane”
Anna was referring to is originally named Katie Meli, Ethan’s birth mother. Katie was stalking
the Russell family, the reason why they have transferred to the neighborhood where Katy
was living. David then rejects Anna’s proposal of reporting it to the police, then he was
suddenly attacked by Ethan who was living in her house for a week. Ethan then reveals that
he was the person responsible for the death of his mother and plans to kill Anna too. They
were involved in a brawl which resulted to the death of Ethan, as he fell from the skylight.

Months later, Anna has now sobered and moves on with her life, by living her home.

III. CHARACTERIZATION

Child Psychologist Anna Fox is the main character of the movie that suffers from
Anxiety and Agoraphobia. Anna lives alone in her apartment, separated from her husband
and daughter, whom she talks to on a daily basis. As her condition impairs her to go out, and
has made her more of a housebound individual, Anna observes her neighbors through her
windows. To manage her condition, Anna undergoes therapy under the care of the
Psychologist named Karl. She was prescribed with medications to manage her anxiety, to
which she drinks with Alcoholic beverages.

Alistair Russell is the head of the Russell household who is physically abusive to his’
family. In one instance he punches his child, Ethan in front of the protagonist, Anna Fox.

Katie Meli, first identified as Jane Russell by the protagonist is the biological mother
of Ethan. During the start of the film, she becomes close to the protagonist, she also died
early into the start of the film. Her death becomes the reason of Anna’s entanglement into a
huge mess, as Anna tries to avenge the death of her friend by finding out was responsible
for the killing.

Ethan Russell is a 16 year old child who is responsible for the death of her biological
mother. He also plans on killing Anna but was unable to do so. He died at the end of the film
as he fell from the skylight of Anna’s home.

Karl is the Psychologist of Anna who has been patient with Anna as she tries to
overcome her anxiety. She counsels Anna by talking to her and challenges Anna to go out of
her home to overcome her Agoraphobia.
