Improper food waste practices include purchasing too much food, using unsuitable storage

practices, cooking too much food, and discarding leftovers. Food waste is a global problem that impacts

food security, water, land, energy, labor, economy, climate, and environment. Among students it can be

assumed that due to their lifestyle with frequent changes of residence and temporary secondary

residences, a relatively high amount of food waste occurs. The present study aims to analyze to what

extent perceived importance of, interest in and knowledge of food waste influence students’ behavior

with respect to food purchases, preparation and storage causing food waste. The objective is to

understand young people’s perceptions of food waste so that behavior change interventions programs

can be designed that will be effective in reducing food waste and creating a world where resources are

sourced and used sustainably. Therefore, understanding their perception is crucial in designing future

programs for food saving.

While many studies focus on how individuals' practices in food waste

management, they often overlook how environmental consciousness influences the

perception of individuals in regards on what will be the ultimately impact to this in the

environment. This study emphasizes the need for further research to explore the views

in which students' environmental consciousness shapes their awareness and practices

concerning food waste management. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for

developing effective strategies to reduce the environmental impact of waste

accumulation and promote sustainable practices among student populations.
