COSHH Risk Assessment Form

Department
Names/ type of persons involved
Undergraduate group, lab technicians, cleaners secondary
Procedure description
HF beta is first obtained, which is a strong acid. Solution of HF beta and a solvent such as
acetone is prepared with a concentration of HF beta being 1-2 mol/L. The ketone is then
added to the HF beta solution in order to convert it and the mixture is stirred for about 1-2
hours.
Substances used Hazard identification+ the Exposure limit/ toxicity
exposure routes, and the
estimated risk when using
all controls as specified
Acetone Highly flammable LD50 = 2200 mg/kg
Distilled water Low acute toxicity but may
HF beta cause mild irritation to eyes,
HF skin or mucous membranes.
Control/ containment measures
- Adequate ventilation, such as fume hoods or local exhaust systems.
- Follow safe handling and storage procedures, which include using appropriate
containers and labeling to reduce risk of accidental exposure.
- Store away from ignition sources.
- Use PPE including gloves, safety goggles and lab coats.
Emergency procedures (not otherwise covered by Changes to fire risk
departmental good lab practice) assessment
Upon spilling: immediately restrict access to area. Put on - Identify as a
appropriate PPE and if spill is small then carefully absorb flammable substance
with absorbent materials specifically designed for chemical and characterize
spills. If spill is significant evacuate the area and notify specific hazards.
laboratory personell and relevant authorities. - Review and specify
After skin contact: remove contaminated clothing and storage requirement.
wash affected area thoroughly with water for at least 15
minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation and symptoms
persist.
After eye contact: immediately wash eyes with a gentle
stream of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical
attentionpromptly.
Upon inhalation: move affected person to area with fresh
air and seek medical attention if necessary.
Health surveillance/ monitoring required
Provide periodic medical evaluation for employees.
Employees are encouraged to report any symptoms.
Do not eat, drink or smoke near where the chemical is handled to avoid ingestion.
Special training requirements
Access restrictions/ signage requirements
- Restricted access to areas where beta- hydroxyacetone is used, stored or handled to
authorized personnel with proper training and are aware of the risks.
- Use of physical access control measures such as locked cabinets and restricted
access rooms.
- Every undergraduate student must have constant supervision
Special waste/ decomposition requirements
Classify waste containing the chemical as hazardous waste. Use containers that are
chemically compatible with the waste and have secure closure to avoid or prevent spills.
Clearly label waste containers with information about the contents, hazards and any special
handling requirements.
