Chapter 5

1. In the unbalanced reaction of aluminum chloride and silver nitrate below, if you have
104.301 g of aluminum chloride and excess silver nitrate: How much solid product is
produced (in grams)? How much silver nitrate reacted (in grams)?
AlCl3(aq) + AgNO3(aq) → AgCl(s) + Al(NO3)3

2. What mass of carbon dioxide (in grams) is formed from the combustion of 98.45 g of
C7H12O2 (g)? Assume oxygen is in excess.

3. In the unbalanced reaction of potassium chromate and lead(II) acetate below, if you have
104.301 g of potassium chromate and 178.42 g of lead(II) acetate: How much solid
product is produced (in grams)? If the actual yield is 34.5 g of solid product, what is the
percent yield? How much of the excess reactant is left over?
K2CrO4(aq) + Pb(C2H3O2)2(aq) → PbCrO4(s) + KC2H3O2(aq)
4. The percent yield of chromium(III) carbonate is 34.7 %, when chromium(III) nitrate
reacts with sodium carbonate shown in the unbalanced reaction below. What is the
amount of sodium carbonate required to react with excess chromium(III) nitrate to
produce 45.0 g of chromium(III) carbonate.
Na2CO3(aq) + Cr(NO3)3(aq) → NaNO3(aq) + Cr2(CO3)3(s)

5. A mineral contains lithium chromate and other inert compounds. In order to find out what
the percent mass of lithium chromate is in the mineral you dissolve 6.294g of the mineral
in water and add iron(III) nitrate to the solution. A solid forms and you continue to add
iron(III) nitrate until the solid stops forming. You filter the solution, dry the solid you
obtained and measure that the mass of solid formed is 1.596 g. What is the percent mass
of lithium chromate in the mineral?

6. Calculate the concentration of LiCl in a solution if: you took 45.76 g LiCl and dissolved
it in water up to a total volume of 100.0 mL, then you took 25 mL of that 100mL solution
and added 100.0 mL of water to it.
7. You have a solution with an unknown concentration of HCl, in order to determine the
concentration of HCl you titrate 35.00 mL of the solution with a 0.3275 M solution of
Ba(OH)2. You reach the endpoint of the titration after having added 34.63 mL of
Ba(OH)2, what is the concentration of HCl in the unknown solution?

8. Determine the molar mass of an unknown acid if you titrate a solution made by taking
3.654g of the acid and dissolving it in 50.00 mL of water. It took 32.16 mL of 0.911 M
NaOH to reach the endpoint, assume the acid and the base react on a 1 to 1 mole ratio.
