Human Activity & Global climate Change place.

Doodle Notes allow for creativity and a visual representation of the material. These

notes will assist students as they learn about the greenhouse effect and definitions of

global warming and climate change. Students will see evidence of global climate change.

This evidence includes sea levels rising, sea ice declining, ocean acidification, global

temperatures rising, and an increase in extreme weather events. These doodle notes

include a graph illustrating the rise in CO2 over time. Students compare fossil fuels to

renewable resources and see which human activities contribute to a rise in global tem-

perature. Students can color the notes for homework. Do not spend extra class time

on coloring.

These notes work towards mastering NGSS MS-ESS3-5

Ask questions to clarify evidence of the factors that have caused the rise in global
temperatures over the past century.

combustion, cement production, and agricultural activity) and natural processes (such as chang-
es in incoming solar radiation or volcanic activity). Examples of evidence can include tables,
graphs, and maps of global and regional temperatures, atmospheric levels of gases such as
carbon dioxide and methane, and the rates of human activities. Emphasis is on the major role
that human activities play in causing the rise in global temperatures.]

CER: According to the pie chart and your notes, explain what human
activities have contributed to the increase of greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere?

Epa.gov

Claim: Human activities that contribute to an increased amount of greenhouse gases in the atmos-

phere are transportation, electricity, industry, agriculture, cement making, and deforestation.

Evidence: From the pie chart by from Epa.gov, we learn transportation accounted for 29% of the
greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere in 2019. Electricity is often created with fossil fuels and

accounts for 25% of greenhouse gases released while industry accounts for 23%. Homes and businesses

account for 13% of the total while agriculture makes up 10% of the total greenhouse gases released

into the atmosphere in 2019 in the U.S.

©Mrs. Proton Priest

Reasoning: Some specific human activities that increase the amount of greenhouse gases are

driving cars and other forms of transportation, electricity creation and usage, industry, agriculture, cement

making, and deforestation.

Therefore, we learned that there are many human activities that contribute to greenhouse gases being re-

leased into the environment with the top three in 2019 in the U.S. being transportation, electricity, and in-

dustry.

CER: Scientists at the Mauna Loa Observatory have been monitor-
ing carbon dioxide levels. How have the levels of carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere changed from 1960 to 2020? How does this impact
Earth’s atmosphere?

Claim: Carbon dioxide levels as measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory have steadily increased

from 1960 to 2020.

Evidence: From NOAA’s graph of carbon dioxide levels we learn, that in 1960 carbon dioxide was

measured to be about 315 ppm at the Mauna Loa Observatory. The graph shows a steady increase in

carbon dioxide levels. In 2020, the carbon dioxide levels were measured to be about 415 ppm which is an

increase of 100 ppm in the forty years data was collected.

©Mrs. Proton Priest

Reasoning: The levels of carbon dioxide impact Earth because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse
gas that traps heat in the atmosphere warming the surface of the Earth. If we have more carbon di-

oxide continue to build up in the atmosphere, the Earth will continue to warm as heat is absorbed by

carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Therefore, we learned that scientists at the Mauna Loa Observatory have collected data showing that

levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have been steadily rising between 1960 and 2020. Carbon

dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps heat and contributes to climate change.

CER: Why are more efficient cars and planes important

in our effort to reduce the level of greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere?

Epa.gov

Claim: More efficient cars and plant are important in our effort to reduce the level of greenhouse

gases in the atmosphere because transportation was the #1 source of greenhouse gases entering the

atmosphere in 2019.

Evidence: From the pie chart from Epa.gov, we learn there are several sources of greenhouse

gas emissions. In 2019, transportation accounted for 29% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the United

States.

©Mrs. Proton Priest

Reasoning: The levels of greenhouse gases on Earth are impacted by cars and planes because
we know that transportation accounts for the largest release of greenhouse gases. If we can manufac-

ture more efficient cars and planes that will release a smaller amount of greenhouse gases in their pro-

duction and use, we can reduce the release of these gases into the atmosphere. Less greenhouse gases

means less trapped heat in our atmosphere and less impact on global warming.

Therefore, we learned that transportation was the #1 contributor to greenhouse gas emission in the

United States in 2019. We learned that more efficient cars and planes would help reduce the release of

greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
