Guide Questions / Problem Set
Name:
RAMOS REYNO NERONA
_________________________ __________________________ __________________________
Family Name Given Name Middle Name

Instructions:
a. Type/write your answers on the given spaces below each number. Answers for essay questions should not be
more than the prescribed number of sentences. For mathematical problems, show complete solutions. Your
answers/solutions are personal. Do not copy nor share them to your classmates, to avoid significant deductions.
b. Save your personal file in PDF format, as follows:
< Family Name, Given Name >_<M 2>
example: Bau, Rey_M 2
Save in only one (1) file name, regardless of the number of pages. Do not assign 1 file name each for every
page. If this happens, only the first page will be considered.
c. Send your electronic file to our google classroom on or before the set deadline, in order to avoid unnecessary but
very significant deduction in scores (please refer to our House Rules).
d. Please do not be limited by the given reference materials. Feel free and be creative to utilize other related and
relevant print and non-print reference materials that could enhance your learning in the given topic, from the
University Library, and/or the internet.

1. In how many different ways can a true-false test consisting of 9 questions be answered? (15 points)
Solutions:

Since there are 9 questions to be answered by either true or false, the number ways to answer

N = 29 = 512 ways; answer

2. If a multiple choice test of 5 questions each with 4 possible answers of which only 1 is correct,
a. In how many different ways can a student check off one answer to each question? (15 points)
Solutions:

There are 5 questions and 4 possible answer for each question

let N - number of ways the student can check off the answer

N = 45 = 1024 ways; answer

Page 1 of 4
b. In how many ways can a student check off one answer to each question and get all the answers
wrong? (15 points)

Solutions:

Since there are four choices of answer and only one is correct, the chance of getting a wrong
aswer is;

N = 35 = 243 ways; answer

3. A witness to a hit-and-run accident told the police that the license number contained the letters RLH
followed by 3 digits, the first of which was a five. If the witness cannot recall the last 2 digits, but is
certain that all three are different, find the maximum number of automobile registrations that the police
may have to check. (15 points)
Solutions:
The registration plate contains RLH
The witness is certain that 5 is the first digit
The second digit will be from 0-9, except 5 = 9 numbers
The third digit is from 0-9, except 5 and the second digit = 8 numbers
Maximum number of automobiles to check
N = 9x8 = 72 vehicle registration

4. A bag contains 7 black and 6 white balls. In how many ways can we draw from the bag groups of 5
balls involving at least 3 black balls? (25 points)
Solutions:
Consider Two Cases:
1. Exactly 3 black balls were chosen
2. Exactly 4 or 5 black balls were chosen

Case 1: For the total number of ways:

N = result from case 1 + result in case 2

N = (35x15)+(35+6+21+1)

Case 2: N = 756 ways; answer

5. In a survey concerning the smoking habits of consumers, it was found that 55% smoke cigarette A, 50%
smoke cigarette B, 40% smoke cigarette C, 30% smoke cigarettes A and B, 20% smoke cigarettes A
and C, 12% smoke cigarettes B and C, and only 10% smoke all three cigarettes. What percentage of the
population did not smoke? Illustrate the Venn Diagram and show complete your solution. (30 points)

Solutions:

let x = total percent of the population who smokes

x = 15+10+18+2+18+20

x = 93%

The percent of the population who does not smoke

% = 100% - x

% = 100% - 93%

% = 7%; answer

6. There are 20 seniors serving the student council of UPang this academic year. Of these, 3 have not
served before, 10 served on the council in their Junior years, 9 in their Sophomore years, and 11 in their
Freshmen years. There are 5 who served during both their Sophomore and Junior years, 6 during both
their Freshmen and Junior years, and 4 during both their Freshmen and Sophomore years. How many
Seniors served on the student council during the four years in college? Illustrate the Venn Diagram and
show complete solution. (50 points)

Solutions:
let x - number of seniors who have served during each of the four years in college
20-3 = 17, number of seniors who have served in the council
6-x = number of seniors who have served during freshman and junior
5-x = number of seniors who have served both junior and senior
4-x = number of seniors who have served both freshman and senior
The number of seniors who have served for junior only
10-(6-x+x+5-x) = x-1
The number of seniors who have served for sophomore only
9-(4-x+x+5-x) = x
The number of seniors who have served the council during the four years in college
17 = x-1+x+1+x+4-x+x+6-x+5-x
17 = x+15
x = 2 seniors; answer
