3. Number the answers according to the numbering system used in this question
paper.
QUESTION 1
An epicyclic gear train has two planetary gears with 36 teeth each and a sun gear with
14 teeth. The input shaft is connected to the sun gear and transmits 3,8 kW of power at
a speed of 230 r/min. The output shaft is connected to the carrier arm of the planetary
gear. These planetary gears mesh with an outer ring gear.
1.1 Calculate the number of internal teeth of the ring gear. (2)
1.2 Calculate the speed of the output shaft and the amount of torque that is
transmitted if the efficiency of the system is 92%. (8)
[10]
QUESTION 2
A pinion has a pitch circle diameter of 200 mm and has 48 teeth. The pinion meshes
with a single-start worm gear that is rotating at 240 r/min, and the force created through
this contact is 1 350 N.
Calculate the torque input of the worm gear as well as the speed of the pinion if the
efficiency of the system is 86%. [10]
QUESTION 3
A flat belt is 15 mm thick. The driving pulley has a radius of 500 mm, an angle of contact
of 155° and a speed of 320 r/min. The coefficient of friction between the pulley and the
belt is 0,32. The belt has a density of 860 kg per cubic metre. The maximum allowable
tension in the belt is 25 kN/m.
Calculate the width of the belt needed to transmit 42,5 kW of power. [20]
QUESTION 4
The centre distance between the head and the tail is 100 m, with bucket spacing of 700
mm. At a chain speed of 75 m/min, a mass of 1 200 tons is transported in an effective
shift time of 8 hours. The discharge of the coal takes place at 30° after top dead centre.
Calculate:
4.1
The diameter of the head pulley (4)
4.2 The total length of the chain. Assume the same diameter for both the head and
the tail pulleys. Ignore the deflection of the chain given by the tension device. (2)
4.3 The driving motor power required if the drive is 81% efficient (9)

QUESTION 5
5.1 List SIX holdback devices that are used to prevent rope haulages from
reversing when stopped. (6)
5.2 An endless rope haulage is required to convey 600 tons of ore up an incline of
15° and 650 m long, in an effective shift time of SEVEN hours. The capacity of
the tub is 1 ton and the mass of an empty tub is 500 kg. The rope speed is
70 m/min while the rolling resistance is 180 N/ton. The total friction of the rope
on the rollers is 16 kN. Allow a factor of safety of 5.
Calculate:
QUESTION 6
An elevator starts from rest with an acceleration of 1,2 m/s 2. The hoisting drum has a
diameter of 0,75 m, a mass of 350 kg and a radius of gyration of 0,48 m. The elevator
car has a total mass of 950 kg, while the counterweight has a mass of 680 kg. The force
needed to overcome friction is 520 N.
Calculate:
6.1 The speed of the elevator after 2,2 seconds of travel (2)
6.2 The total torque required to accelerate both the load and the hoisting drum. (8)
[10]
QUESTION 7
The wheels of a vehicle increase their speed uniformly from 60 r/min to 1 200 r/min in
50 seconds. The wheel diameter is 650 mm.
Calculate:
QUESTION 8
If 150 kJ of energy is stored in a flywheel when it is rotating at 160 r/min and the speed
is reduced to 120 r/min after punching a hole, find the average force exerted by the
punch if the stroke is 30 mm. [5]
