Petrokimia Gresik, East Java, Indonesia REFERENCES The following documents shall be a part and reference of this document. - NFPA-78 Lightning Protection Code - NFPA-77 Recommended Practices on Static Electricity. - ANSI / IEEE Recommended Practice for Grounding of Industrial and Commercial Power System. - APLRP Protection Against Ignitions Arising Out of Static, Lightning and Stray Currents. GENERAL Bonding and grounding facilities shall be provided to : 1), Protect electrical equipment from damage and to insure operation of electrical over current devices. (System neutral grounding) 2). Protect personnel against shocks from electrical enclosure or equipment. (Enclosure and equipment grounding) 3). Protect structures and equipment against damage from lightning. (Lightning protection) 4). Insure against ignition of flammable mixtures by static electricity or stray current. (Static electricity current) }. GROUNDING SYSTEMS 1). Grounding system shall consist of networks installed around major process units, buildings, structures, distribution centers, substations, etc. Networks shall consist of grounding buses (main loops), grounding electrodes and grounding conductors for equipment. 2). Where the grounding systems are installed close to each other, they shall be interconnected at convenient points to bring all grounding to a common potential 3). Grounding for lightning protection shall be entirely separated from the electrical power grounding system. Grounding rods shall be located at the base of each protected structure. 4). Equipment which located remotely from the main grounding network, may be grounded using individual grounding conductors and grounding electrodes. 5). Where underground grounding conductors cross under main roads or paved area, they shall run in rigid conduits, pipe sleeves or duct banks in the same manner as wiring as cable system. 6). Grounding conductors extending aboveground shall be protected by a rigid steel conduit at least 150 mm above and below the finished grade or concrete surface. 5.2. Bonding and Grounding Connection 4). All grounding and bonding conductor connections to structures and equipment shall be made aboveground and with lugs bolted connectors for periodical maintenance. Those connectors shalll be protected by suitable materials 2). Material of grounding lugs shall be hot dipped galvanized steel sized as 12t x 38 x 70 or 120mm. 3). Connections of cable to cable shall be made by compression type connector, and wrapped with PVC tape. 5.3 Grounding Electrode 1). Grounding electrodes shall consist of driven rods and shall be cooper and shall have a minimum diameter of 18 mm and 3 m length. 2). A grounding rod shall connect to the loop conductor at the top of the rod in the concrete made grounding well, which is used as inspection pit for grounding resistance. 3). The grounding rod shall be connected to the loop conductor by a bolted connector. 4). If more than one electrode is connected to ground systems, the electrodes shall be spaced at least 3 m apart. 5). For equipment located remotely, each grounding rod shall be connected to the equipment and no grounding well for inspection purpose is required. 6). Grounding electrode shall have an electrode marker near grounding well or on the grounding electrode as shown on the standard drawings. 6. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM GROUNDING Neutral Grounding 1), . Neutrals of 6/0.38 kV transformers shall be solidly grounded. 2). . The metal enclosures for wire and cable, such as conduits, cable trays and raceways, shall be grounded at each end. Connections shall be made to the switchgear or control center ground buses, when such equipment is used. . The metal armour of cables shall be bonded together at each cable termination and across each splice, and shall be bonded to the metal enclosures of equipment at each end. The metallic shields in shielded cables shall be grounded at supply side only The electrical continuity of metal enclosures for wire and cable shall be assured between terminations. Grounding Point of Equipment as The metal enclosures of all electrical equipment shall be connected to a grounding network. . Street lights, flood lights, other outdoor lighting fixtures and convenience receptacles shall be grounded by one conductor of multi conductor cable. ). Metal enclosures, such as fences, partitions and around electrical equipment shall be grounded to a grounding network. Electrical equipment, even though they are bolted directly to grounded metallic structures, additional grounding shall be required. 7. LIGHTNING PROTECTION al 72) 73 Lightning protection for vessels, storages tank, other structures or masonry stacks shall be provided if their size exceeds 20 m height. Important structures shall be protected against damage from lightning, such as : 1). 2). Structures that are normally occupied by personnel, such as contro! building and maintenance stations. Structures that contain appreciable quantities of flammable materials, such as storehouses for flammable materials and drum or can filling facilities, or both, Structures not having metallic frames or siding shall be protected as follows : 1). 2), 3), 4), 5). Lightning protection facilities shall consist of air terminals, down conductors, testing joints and grounding electrodes. The air terminal should be ACTIVE NON RADIO ACTIVE type. Down conductors for lightning protection on the building shall be protected by schedule 40 PVC in standard conduit sized 25 mm min. and it shall extend a minimum of 300 mm below grade and 2,000 mm above finished grade. Each down conductor shall be provided with testing joint at a convenient location One down conductor shall be provided for every 30 meter of perimeter. All storage tanks, vessels, exchangers and other process equipment, which are not mounted on grounded steel structure, shall be grounded.
