Windows 10 can't repair microSD card, even though it Last updated December 8, 2023
says it did.
Views 10,308
I have a 64gb microSD card that I've used in the past, and when I went to use it again, Windows
says there's a problem with the disk and to scan & fix it (the usual error for removing something Applies to:
from a USB drive without ejecting it from Windows first). When I select that option, it says that it
can't be used because there are errors on the drive. When I click on repair, it scans it and says Windows / Windows 10 /
there are no errors, which is followed by ANOTHER window saying it can't be used because there Devices and drivers
are errors and to fix it.....over and over until I just select cancel.

So, I'm not supposed to be able to write/copy data on a damaged drive, but I actually still CAN. It try Microsoft 365
works perfectly on the PC (except for the errors when I insert it), but I only want to use it in the for free
Nintendo Switch, which can't access it to format there. When trying to format it on Windows 10
using the default exFAT setting, it says Windows can't complete the format. When I select the Unlock now
NTFS option, it says that it's been formatted....

...However, it WASN'T formatted! All of the data is still there (I tried 2 micro-SD adapters, and
made sure neither was set to write protect). I've tried scanning, repairing, and formatting it from
the command prompt (both normal & Admin), and also in Disk Manager (which says the disk is
healthy), but with no luck. I've also tried doing all of this on another Windows 10 computer, with
the same results. Also, I made sure that all of the USB drivers are updated.

Any ideas on how to fix this broken card that isn't broken? I almost got a headache from trying to
explain all of this! :)

I'm using Windows 10 Pro, 1803 update.

Hi ZeistIsBad,

Since you've mentioned that you already tried your SD card to another PC and still
gets the same issue, it could be possible that some part of your SD card got corrupted
that prevents it from getting formatted. As far as Windows can go in repairing your SD
card, I suggest that you perform chkdsk and see if it helps. Here's how:

1. Insert your SD card.

2. On the Cortana search box, type cmd.
3. Right click and select Run as administrator.
4. On the command window, type chkdsk <space> <drive letter of your SD card
and colon> /f (example: chkdsk d: /f)
5. Hit the enter key.

Note: this step could erase some, if not, all the data stored on your SD card.

Windows will then scan your SD card and attempt to fix any corruption. If the issue
persists after using the chkdsk command, then you'll have to check a third party
program or app that could repair corrupted SD cards. You might also want to contact
the manufacturer support for further assistance with your SD card as well.

Please respond to this thread to let me know how the issue progresses. Similarly, if you
have more questions, please inform me by replying to this post.

Using chkdsk from cmd still says that there's nothing wrong with the disk. I tried using
2 third-party formatting/fixing programs, and both said they successfully formated it.
However, when I checked the drive when they were done, every single file was still on
it, and still accessible. It apparently can't be formatted or fixed, even though it says it
has been. Also, checking with SanDisk themselves was no help.
