Topic: Exploring the Inheritance of Intellectual Abilities

Hook: Do you think that IQ it is related to our parents?

General Background:

Psychologists recognize that intelligence is a complex trait shaped by both

genetic and environmental factors. While the nature versus nurture debate has
persisted, modern research suggests that intelligence is a result of the interplay
between our genetic makeup and the environment in which we are raised. (Plomin
& Von Stumm, 2018)

Intelligence can be broadly defined as the ability to learn, reason and solve
problems. (Gottfredson, 1994)

Thesis statement: Genetic and Environmental Influences on Intelligence

Outline statement:

This presentation will be divided into two parts. My first argument is the
genetic influence on intelligence and my second point will be focus on
environmental influence on intelligence.

Body:

Evidence of Genetic Influences on Intelligence (Oommen, 2014)

 According to studies, identical twins may have more similar IQ scores than
fraternal twins.
 Compared to adopted children reared in the same home, siblings who grew
up in the same environment share a higher similarity in IQ.

Evidence of Environmental Influences on Intelligence

 Compared to identical twins reared in the same home, identical twins grown
apart had less similar IQs. (Oommen, 2014)
 Higher IQ test results are correlated with longer educational duration.
(Oommen, 2014)
 Global improvements in IQ have been linked to better nutritional policies.
(Ritchie & Tucker-Drob, 2018)

Conclusion

An individual's IQ is multifactorial, influenced by a wide range of variables.

Human intelligence is influenced by both nature and nurture. The IQ of an
individual can be influenced by a number of modifiable environmental factors,
including education, nutrition, even though genetic susceptibility plays a significant
role in IQ.
