At the time I visited, I recorded

a pH of 5.5, 0°GH, 2°KH and a
temperature of 27°C. The river’s
banks were populated with ibises and
overgrown with jungle trees, from
which small monkeys watched
proceedings with curious glances.
We snorkelled and fished there for
three days, fascinated by the
abundance of fish that populate this
biotope. This is a worthwhile
destination to visit.

Astyanax bimaculatus
No sooner had our faces touched the
water than we recognised two-spot
astyanax, Astyanax bimaculatus
(Linné, 1758), swimming around in
shoals, approaching us seemingly
unafraid and full of curiosity. They
seem aware that people swimming
stir up fine particles among which
they gleefully sift for morsels to eat.
Even though these hefty, 10cm
characins feed predominantly on
zooplankton like copepods,
ostracods, mosquito larvae and fly
larvae, they will not turn their noses
up at detritus and some plant matter.
They are even said to be occasionally
lepidophagous, eating the scales of
other fish, so it’s advisable to use a
species-only set-up for them.
Larger groups have more visual
appeal because all the fins aside the
pectorals are yellowish-orange or,
especially in males, even red, which
contrasts nicely against the silver
body, the scales of which have
narrow dark edges. The refers to the humeral spot and a
‘two-spot’ name longitudinal blotch on the caudal
peduncle which extends to the end
of the central caudal fin rays.

Behold the black lines

Another schooling fish found here is
the black line tetra, Moenkhausia
costae (Steindachner, 1907). It grows
to about 7-8 cm and is difficult to sex,
ripe females being only a bit fatter
than males. Formal sources tell us
that it lives in north-eastern Brazil
(Bahia, Alagoas, Pernambuco), but
we found it in an Orinoco-affluent,
which means that the species is more
widespread to the north.
These characins are robust and
adaptable, which is especially true if

solutions incorporating beer chillers, then passes through an expansion to consider a couple of things.
Firstly, you’ll need to place it in a
well-ventilated area. In a closed
cabinet the warm air expelled by the
chiller will be trapped around it, and
this will significantly reduce the
cooling performance. This means
that you may need to cut an
appropriately sized vent or direct the
flow towards the (usually) open back
of the cabinet. Most of the Teco TK
chillers have a rotatable top, so you
can guide the airflow in the most
convenient direction.
Also consider the routing of the
cooled water (outflow) pipe. It’s no
use to cool the water down and then
run it across the warm air flow or

consider insulating the pipework to
improve performance. You mustn’t

JEREMY SAYS: Yes, you should run the waterfall in the heat as it drives
off CO2 and increases oxygen: two things the fish need. Run it 24 hours
per day, as the fish are most likely to succumb to low oxygen levels at
night. It’s also important to keep it running because it's fed by the filter

Waste organics may collect over time from dead plant matter, fish
waste or uneaten food. It’s important to preform frequent water
changes while removing this waste. Use a syphon to lift the waste
from the top layer of the substrate — this is particularly helpful
when cleaning established carpets of plants. You can also use a

let’s have a go. It was one of my best
decisions.

Mystery lemons
Let me begin with some background
on the lemons. They originate from
the lower Amazon River basin and
for a long time have been considered
to be endemic to the middle and
lower reaches of Rio Tapajos, until
recent research found them in the
River Xingu system as well.
In the wild they inhabit typical
‘tetra’ waters: the forested areas of
slow-flowing tributaries of the main
rivers and adjoining igarapes. Under
the shadows of the forest canopy the
yellows of the lemon tetra really do
impress. The water parameters are
varied, but usually around 5-6pH and
23-28°C, with negligible hardness,
and these habitats are often shared
with other Hyphessobrycon tetras.
Within this genus of seemingly
mismatched characins, you can find

appear more obviously yellow in whiter lighting) with the most

At just 15cm fully grown, it’s manageable in set-ups that

part camouflage, the colours can switch in a heartbeat,
making it an exciting fish to own.
From the Philippines through to Indonesia, it makes its
