ENGLISH EXAM REVISION 2022

(10 minutes reading time, 75 minutes writing time)

There are three sections in the English exam;

1) Spelling
2) Grammar – Parts of speech (Nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. See Pages 8 – 11,
16-25 of grammar booklet).
3) Text Response Essay based on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

GENERAL TIPS

In reading time

1. Read the exam from cover to cover;

2. Look at the allocation of marks and decide how much time should be devoted to
each section. A guide will be provided on the examination paper. NOTE: You will not
be permitted to use your dictionary for the spelling or grammar sections. (These will
be in a separate booklet from the essay).
3. In the remaining reading time, focus on the essay question. Think about your
contention and which arguments you may use.

SECTION 1 – SPELLING (10 minutes) (copy of spelling list attached)

You will be given a passage and there will be 20 misspelled words contained in this passage.
You will have ten minutes to complete this section.

Spelling words have been taken from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Spelling lists (Week 1 –
5)

SECTION 2 – GRAMMAR (15 minutes)

You will be asked a series of questions based on four parts of speech (Nouns, adjectives,
verbs and adverbs. See Pages 8 – 11, 16-25 of grammar booklet).

SECTION 3 – TEXT RESPONSE ESSAY (50 minutes)

You are required to write a text response essay based on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. In
class, we will be working on a practice essay topic such as:

Friendship was the most important influence on Bruno’s choices. Discuss.

In working on this practice essay, you will be revising the structure of a text response essay
and some important ideas from the novel. This will help to prepare you for writing an essay
in the exam.

GOOD LUCK! ☺
