2.1.5.1 Err:509
The guide wall is required for keeping the alignment and verticality of the contiguous pile
wall within the tolerable limits. Trench excavation shall be carried out along the contiguous
pile wall center line for a depth 50 cm from working platform level.

2.1.5.2 TEMPORARY GUIDE CASING

A crawler mounted piling rig specially developed to reduce the possible disturbance to the
surrounding soil will be used to install contiguous piles. A temporary guide casing of
appropriate diameter shall be installed to the pile center t

The temporary casing used will be free from significant distortion and shall be uniform
cross-section throughout the length.

the steel casing is measured from the reference pins and adjustment made so that the
reference pins are equidistant from the steel casing. The verticality of t

Rev.: 02

2.1.5.3 DRILLING OF PILE BORE HOLE

After installation of the temporary guide casing, the borehole will be drilled using
appropriate drilling tools. The borehole will be drilled under bentonite slurry support for soil
stabilization.

The Slurry Support System relies on the presence of a thixotropic mud-water mix to
maintain the stability of the sidewalls in a drilled borehole. The positive hydrostatic
pressure developed by the slurry achieves this.

The drilling fluid is prepared in mixers and kept in tanks for storage and hydration purpose.

After fixing of guide casing, the borehole will be drilled down to its final level by means of
bucket and auger.

The drilled borehole will be filled with bentonite slurry and the slurry level maintained at
working platform level at all times.

2.1.5.4 RECYCLING
The process of cleaning the bentonite suspension from sands and silts to keep its quality
within the allowable limits is called recycling.

Recycling will be performed after excavation has been completed and the bentonite slurry
has been replaced by concrete.

The suspension from the borehole will be pumped to the desanding plant during concreting.
After being cleaned in the plant, the bentonite will be pumped to the bentonite tank for
further use. For cleaning operation of the bottom of the borehole a cleani

Bentonite suspension

We propose a bentonite concentration of 5%. New bentonite slurry will have the following
properties.

Density : 1.03 to 1.10 g/cm3

Viscosity : 30 – 75 s

Ph value : 9.5 – 12

Rev.: 02

In order to achieve a concentration of 5%, 50 kg of bentonite will be added to approximately

1000 liters of water.

Mixing will take place in a mixing plant designed for this purpose. The bentonite slurry
shall rest in a tank for at least 6 hours to allow proper hydration.

2.1.5.5 CONSTRUCTION OF PILE

The piles are constructed at minimum 3 piles diameter c/c on the same day.

1st day = 1,4,7,10,-,-

2nd day = 2,5,8,-,-

METHOD STATEMENT & PILE DESIGN

Date: 5-Mar-24 Ms. No. MSTA / ED / Piles / SK- - 01 Rev. No. 02

3rd day = 3,6,9,-,-

The piles are reinforced piles with concrete strength 40N/mm2. The c/c distance between
the piles after installation shall be as per table 1.(above)

2.1.5.6 PILE REINFORCEMENT

Subsequent to the completion of the drilling, the borehole depth will be checked and verified
versus the depth given on the drawings. Only after borehole depth check can the cage be
lowered into the borehole.

A reference site datum level will be given to ensure the correct positioning of the cage.

Spacers shall be fixed to the spiral of the reinforcement cage to ensure the specified
concrete cover and to keep the reinforcement cage centered in the borehole.

The reinforcement cage top level will be checked to verify the correct level.

To keep the steel cage in place and at the correct levels, the cage will be hanged or
arrested to the temporary casing until concreting is finished.

2.1.5.7 CASTING CONCRETE

The concrete is delivered to site by means of truck mixers. The concrete will be received on
site and the delivery ticket will be checked for correctness in accordance with the approved
mix design.

The concrete will be checked for the slump (175 + 25 mm). Cubes will be taken as per
specification to check the compressive strength.
METHOD STATEMENT & PILE DESIGN

Date: 5-Mar-24 Ms. No. MSTA / ED / Piles / SK- - 01 Rev. No. 02

7.1 SOIL MECHANICS ASPECT DESIGN OF PILE
Test Pile (BRG LOC 4-1 and LOC 4-2) BH - BH-02
General Data
Diameter of pile (D) = 2200 mm
Characteristic strength of concrete (Fcu) = 45 N/sqmm
Characteristic strength of concrete (Fc') = 36 N/sqmm
Characteristic strength of steel (Fy) = 500 N/sqmm
Pile Capacity in Compression = 18000 KN
Pile Capacity in Tension = 0 KN
Lowest Pile cut-off-level = 4.300 m DMD

Toe level of pile = -29.000 m DMD

The Ultimate bearing capacity of pile in Compression is given by the formulae

Qu = Qb +Qs
where
Qu = Ultimate pile capacity
Qb= Ultimate end bearing capacity of pile
Qs = Ultimate skin friction capacity of pile

Allowable pile capacity Qa in Compression

Qa = Qu / Factor of safety

7.1-1 To find Ultimate end bearing capacity of pile (Qb)

For Pile toe resting in rock,
Qb = 2 x No x Qub x Ab
where
Phi = 0
No = Bearing Capacity Factor = tan2 (45+Phi/2) = 1.00
Qub = Average unconfined compressive strength for end bearing = 2500 kN/m2
Ab = End bearing area of pile
Ab = (3.1416/4) x 2.2 x 2.2
Ab = 3.801 m2

Substituting the values in above equation

Ultimate Bearing capacity of pile (Qb)
Qb = 19007 KN
Several references give the following end bearing maximum values :
- tomlinson 7th edition Page 285, fig. 7.8, the limit value of end bearing resistance
in coarse soil is 15 mpa (After te kamp)
- tomlinson 7th edition Page 286, table 7.1, the API gives the maximum 12 mpa
for dense to very dense sand and gravel.
- Piling engg. 2nd edition (Fleming, Weltman, Randolph and Elson) Page 96
and the end bearing resistance is limited to 10 mpa to 15 mpa.
- Meyerhof ( 1976) limits the end bearing resistance to 300 N (normalized)for bored
piles. This allows the maximum value of 15 MPA for N spt = 50

Based on above recommendation, we are considering ultimate end bearing of 10 Mpa.

Therefore ultimate end bearing capacity = 10 N/sq.mm x 3.14 x 2200 x 2200 / 4

= 38014 KN

Qb = 0 KN (End bearing is Ignored)

7.1-2 To find Ultimate skin friction capacity of pile (Qs)

Qs = 3 x N X As (for soils in sands)

Qs(for Piles in Rock)

The skin friction is a combination of soils in sands & rocks

Therefore Qs = 3 x N X As1 + 0.20*UCS^0.5*As2+ 0.25*UCS^0.5*As3 (Equation - a)

where
N = Average N value of soils along pile shaft

As = Area of pile shaft = 3.1416 x d x L (in soil or rock)

L = Length of pile shaft in soils

Quc = Unconfined compressive strength along the pile shaft in rock

7.1-3 To find Ultimate bearing capacity of pile (Qu)

The Ultimate bearing capacity of pile in Compression is given by the formulae

Qu = Qb +Qs

where
Qu = Ultimate pile capacity
Qb= Ultimate end bearing capacity of pile (From Section 7.1-1)
Qs = Ultimate skin friction capacity of pile

Qu = 0 + 55581 KN
Qu = 55581 KN

7.1-4 To find Safe bearing capacity of pile (Qa) in compression

Allowable pile capacity Qa in Compression

Qa = Qu / Factor of safety
where
Qu = 55581 KN
F.O.S. = 2.50 for skin friction
F.O.S. = 3.00 for end bearing
Therefore
Allowable pile capacity Qa in Compression
Qa = (55581 / 2.5)+(0 / 3)
22232 KN
Since the allowable pile capacity in compression of 22232KN is greater than 18000KN required.

Therefore it can be concluded that a 2200mm diameter pile bearing at -29m DMD is adequate for
carrying the applied load of 18000KN(Compression load)

7.1-5 To find Safe bearing capacity of pile (Qt) in Tension

Allowable pile capacity Qt in Tension

Qt = Qs / Factor of safety in Tension
where
Qs = 55581 KN
F.O.S. = 2.50

Therefore
Allowable pile capacity Qt in Tension
Qt = 55581 x 70%/ 2.5 (Considering 70% reduction)
15563 KN
Since the allowable pile capacity in tension of 15563KN is greater than 0KN required.

Therefore, it can be concluded that a 2200mm diameter pile bearing at -29m DMD is adequate for
carrying the applied load of 0KN(Tension Load)

7.1S.0 STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF PILE
General Data

Characteristic strength of concrete (Fcu) = 45 N/sqmm
Characteristic strength of steel (Fy) = 500 N/sqmm
Pile Capacity (N) = 7539 KN

7.1S.1a CHECK FOR CONCRETE STRESS

According to ACI 318, the working stress in compression should not exceed 31.25 % of the characteristics
cylindrical concrete strength (28 days).

Working stresss = 7539 x 1000 = 1.98 N/sqmm

0.785 x 2200 x 2200

Allowable stress in concrete = 0.3125 x 36 = 11.25 N/sqmm

Since 1.98 is less than 11.25 N/sqmm concrete is not overstressed.

2.1s.1b COMPRESSION CAPACITY CHECK

Pn = 0.3 x F'c x Ac + 0.4 x Fy x Ast

where
F'c = 36 N/mm2
Ac = 3801336 mm2
Fy = 500 N/mm2
Ast = 27,646.08 mm2

Subsituting the values in the above equation, we get

Pn = (0.3x36x3801336 + 0.4X500x27646.08) = 46,583.64 kN

Safe working load = 46,583.64 KN

Since 46583.6448 KN > 7539 KN Hence SAFE

Therefore, the pile section can take the applied load.

åsm - åcm = 12.81 mm
Crack width (wk) = Sr.max (åsm - åcm)

where
Sr.max = 239 mm

åsm - åcm = 0.007912 m

Substituting the values in above equation

Crack width (wk) = 239 x 0.007912= 1.89097 mm

As per specification requirements

Crack width (wk) required = 0.2 mm

Since the crack width calculated < crack width required

ie
1.89097 < 0.2 Hence UNSAFE

7.1Se.0 SETTLEMENT OF PILE Test Pile (BRG LOC 4-1 and LOC 4-2) BH - BH-02

The settlement of pile under vertical load is caused by three factors.

Total settlement "S" = S1 + S2 + S3

where
S1 = Settlement due to elastic shortening of pile shaft.

S2 = Settlement of pile caused by the load at the pile point.

S3 = Settlement of pile caused by the load transmitted along the pile shaft.

7.1Se.1 SETTLEMENT OF PILE DUE TO ELASTIC SHORTENING

OF PILE SHAFT. (S1)
S1 = Qwp + s x (Qws) x L
Ap x Ep

where
Qwp = Load carried by End Bearing in KN
Qwp = 10831 KN

Qws = Load carried by Friction (Skin Resistance) in KN

Qws = 7169 KN

Ap = Area of pile cross section in m2

Ap = 3.8 m2

L = Effective pile length (m)

L= 33.300 m

Ep = Young's Modulus of the pile material

Ep = 28200 MN/m2
Ep = 28200000 KN/m2

For Triangular distribution of skin friction along pile shaft

s= 0.67

Substituting the values in above equation:

S1 = (10831 + 0.67 x7169) x 33.3

3.8 x 28200000

S1 = 0.00486 m
