1 Scope and Limitations

This document describes methods to use to define 3D electrical harnesses installation during
Development Phase (M7-M13) with the CATIA V5 tools currently available V5R14 for this
issue).
It explains how to refine and verify 3D electrical harness with installation environment and
constraints.
The harness has been previously designed during Definition Phase according to AM5011.2
recommendations. In all cases it's necessary for the user to know AM5011.2 content before
starting reading this document.
See AM5011.2 Electrical Installation Modelling for Definition Phase - CATIA V5
This document will be updated frequently according to CATIA software improvements and
user feedback.

3 Harness Design Use Cases in Development Phase (M7-M13)

3.1 Add Final Electrical Components

3.1.1 Markers
The target of this function is to create the markers along the branch of a harness.
The marker is used to position the harness with regards to aircraft structure.
In the Electrical Harness Assembly Workbenches, there is dedicated function to define Bundle
Segment (BNS) Markers. Via the catalogue .

It is up to the user to determine which type of marker shall be added to the 3D model

MarkerPowerCopyFromPoint

Marker definition
A marker is represented by a cylinder, overlaying the Bundle Segment (BNS) surface. Each
marker is created in a separate CATPart.
A marker is placed on a BNS by means of a distance parameter from a reference point or
reference plane.
Position and geometry of a marker are defined by two input elements:
− the BNS where the marker is placed,
− a reference point on the BNS curve or intersection of the reference plane with the
BNS.

Note: The diameter of the marker surface is slightly higher (105%) than the BNS diameter to
have it properly visible.

Marker properties
The marker geometry is associative to the BNS on which it is placed: When the BNS is
modified (curve, diameter…), the marker is also modified after updating the assembly.
The marker position is associative to its reference point: any modification of the reference
point (support/connector is moved, BNS is modified…) will impact the marker as well. It is
therefore recommended to choose a reference point close to the marker (avoid BNS extremity
point by default for example).

Marker in the tree structure

Part: will be inserted under the Geometrical Bundle (GBN) containing the covered BNS.

Several markers can be placed on a same BNS or on a same Multi-Branchable. A new Part
will be created for each marker and stored under the GBN node.
Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

Workflow for Marker insertion

Warning: Before to insert a marker, check that the option of Infrastructure/Part Infrastructure
"Only use published elements for external selection keeping link" is enable.
Remember that:
− the reference curve should be Published,
− the reference point should never be a "Project point",
− particular rules manage the marker on bundle with forced length.

The marker is to be instantiated on a bundle segment.

• 2nd step - marker diameter

Initialise the powerCopy marker diameter by creating a knowledge formula
1 - Activate the "Edit formula" command on Maker Diameter box
2 - Apply the "Center Graph" command on the concerned BNS
3 - Expand the BNS body and click the "segment_radius" value
4 - Enter "* 2" coefficient to get the diameter value and validate the formula

Workflow for marker modification

1. In order to edit the marker, activate its CATPart
in the tree.
MARKER DIAMETER: Diameter of the marker

LENGTH ON CURVE: Length between

reference point or plane with the references of
the marker

MARKER TEXT1: text shown in the 3D.

Note 1: Just modify the Marker Text1.

Note 2: Text2 and Text3 are inactive.

2. To modify the length_on_curve, edit the "LENGTH_ON_CURVE" parameter.

3. To modify the marker text, edit the "MARKER_TEXT1" parameter

3.1.2 Adding Further Markers into the Same CATPart

To prevent adding a new CATPart with each marker inserted, which can lead to long marker
lists when working on bigger harnesses, new markers can be created within an existing one. In
this case all markers must refer to the same multi-branchable.

Workflow for insertion of an additional marker

The first marker is created like described before, therefore adding a CADPart to the structure
tree. All further markers are inserted inside this first maker using the following description:
− Activate the first marker
− Select Catalogue Browser

The catalogue browser pops up

− Activate from CADLIB with the path

⇒ In …/cadlib/CATIAV5_ToolLib/Definition/StdMarker
Choose MarkerPowerCopyFromPoint or MarkerPowerCopyFromPlane, depending
on how you want to insert the marker.
⇒ A marker definition window pops up.

− Place the Marker on the harness by selecting the bundle centerline that holds the
marker and the reference point or plane, respectively.
Edit MARKER_DIAMETER, LENGTH_ON_CURVE and MARKER_TEXT inside the
marker definition window.

− Close the marker definition window.

⇒ The new marker is added inside the CADPart under the name "Copy of Marker". If
more than one marker is added inside the CADPart, CATIA V5 enumerates the
copies automatically.

Recommendation
For easier working it's recommended to switch the annotation sets to NoShow after adding
new markers to prevent CATIA from displaying all reference planes of the marker texts.

Edit the markers properties inside one CADPart

The properties of each marker are kept by CATIA V5 within the marker subtree. To change a
property of a marker, one has to identify the marker first, like shown in the following workflow:

Workflow for marker modification inside one CADPart

To modify the properties of a marker inside a CADPart, follow these two steps:
1. Select the marker in 3D.
⇒ The open body of the chosen marker gets highlighted in the structure tree.
2. Choose the property you want to change and modify it.

Markers and Forced Length

Case 1: The marker is placed between a derivation and an extremity

For all case in this configuration, you have to consider that the "over-length" included
by forced length is always applied only between marker and extremity.
Case 2: The marker is placed between 2 derivations
This case is forbidden. The true length has to be represented in the mock-up.

3.1.3 External Protection (Sheaths, Sleeves, Conduits)

Warning: Before to insert a marker, check that the option of Infrastructure/Part Infrastructure
"Only use published elements for external selection keeping link" is enable.
Remember that:
− the reference point should never be a "Project point".
External protections are represented as CATParts. In CATIA V5, a protection is defined as a
mechanical object used to cover one or more Bundle Segments (BNS).
Protections have to be provided by a catalogue. There are four types of protections defined by
AIRBUS: "Convoluted"," Braided Convoluted"," Heat Shrink" and "Split Textile".
For "Convoluted" and "Braided Convoluted" the filling rate is handled by the sub-type of
protection.
Protection "Lower 2m" inherits of a filling rate of 0.8 and "Grater2m" inherits a filling rate of 0.6.
Note that the geometry will reflect the true size of protection including the filling rate.

Workflow for Protection Insertion

1. In the "Electrical Harness Assembly" workbench, select the "Protection" icon .

2. An "Instantiate Protection" window pops up. Select the "Catalogue" button to browse a
catalogue with pre-defined protections.
⇒ In …/cadlib/CATIAV5_ToolLib/Definition/Protection

3. Select a catalogue family and double click on the protection of your choice. Depending on
the protection you might be asked for input parameters.
4. Select the BNS that shall be covered. If you encounter problems to select the segments, try
to select the lower or upper bound of the segment. The covered length is calculated
automatically.
It is possible to select several BNS (from the same Multi-Branchable or different ones), if some
contact and tangency conditions are met. But when using Branch-points, some of these
conditions cannot be fulfilled (see "Protection Covering Several Bundles" later in this
paragraph).
Therefore, it is not recommended to use a protection for several bundle segments.
Whereas instantiating a protection for each bundle segment is more flexible.

By default, the protections limits are the extremities of covered bundles.

To modify these protection limits, double click on start or end extremity (click on the "Start
Extremity" or "End Extremity" labels in the 3D) and define the new position in the "Create point
on curve" window that appears. You can also select a point on the curve in the geometry.
The two Ratio/Length parameters are correlated:
any modification of one parameter will update the
second one. Their values are calculated between
the Reference point and the other extremity of the
bundle segment.
Reference points selected for the protection in this
panel could be:
− BNS definition points,
− supports entry points,
− connector connection points.

Note on "Point to reference": The curve orientation cannot be modified in this panel. The
default orientation is from the extremity point being edited to the
other one.
If you need to modify this curve orientation, you have to edit the extremity points directly in the
protection CATPart (see chapter "Manual Modification of the Protection CATPart" later in this
paragraph). Take into account that this modification has to be handled with care.
Note on "Reference": By default, the reference point is the corresponding BNS extremity at the
protection creation.

This automatic choice of the reference point allows a very fast protection creation. Of course,
any later modification of the reference point (if components are moved or if BNS is lengthened)
will imply a modification of the protection.
Recommendation: Select other reference points than the extremity points in order to be
independent of BNS extremity modifications in the later design. Good
choices could be points that are close to the protection, for example
support points or connector connection points.
Note: Branch-Points are not BNS definition points and therefore cannot be selected as
protection reference points in this dedicated panel. Nevertheless, they can be selected
as a reference point when editing the extremity point directly in the protection CATPart,
within the V5 tree (see chapter "Manual Modification of the Protection CATPart" later in
this paragraph).
Warning: When modifying the reference point, be sure the resulting point is "existing", i.e. still
on the curve between the BNS extremities. Modify the Ratio/Length parameters to
adjust the point.
When all protection parameters are chosen, click "OK" to instantiate the protection. The
protection CATPart is named automatically and it is strongly recommended to rename it now,
before any save, according to the Numbering/Naming conventions.
A protection is named like the assembly in the upper level of the product structure plus the
extension "-SV<XXX>" with <XXX> being a sequential number.
An extension example would be "-SV001".

Workflow for Protection modification

1. In the V5 tree, select the Protection Instance to be modified.
2. Then (in "Electrical Harness Assembly" workbench), select the "Protection" icon .

3. The "Instantiate Protection…" panel pops up: protection parameters and extremities can be
modified.

Protection in the tree structure

The Part that CATIA V5 creates to hold the protection is automatically added under the
Geometrical Bundle (GBN) Product containing the covered BNS.

Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

In most cases, the position of the protection under the GBN Product does not need to be
changed. But sometimes, the protection may have to be moved in the tree structure: e.g. for
manufacturing reasons (see chapter 3.3 "Move a Part in the Tree CATIA V5 Structure").

Protection properties
1. If the BNS routing is modified, for example by adding supports, the protection will follow.
The behavior of the protection is pre-defined by the reference point given in the extremity
point definition.
2. For tape-typed protections, if the diameter of a BNS is changed, the protection diameter will
also be updated.
For tube-typed protections, diameter is fixed by default.
3. A protection can only be added to a BNS with a circular section.
4. A protection in CATIA V5 can cover several bundle segments of one branchable. But it is
not possible to cover segments that belong to different branchables.

3.1.4 Light Protection

The light protection is a particular protection that can be used only when the standard
protection cannot be instantiated due to CATIA limitation.
The light protection is instantiated like a marker with power copy technology. Refer to marker
for workflow.
As for markers it is possible to instantiate new light protection in the same Catpart for the
same multi-branchable.
Note: The properties of light protection (diameter, PartNumber…) should be entered manually
and are not updated in case of modification

3.1.5 Overbraiding
It is possible to specify the internal protection and metal strand to be used across the
parameters of the AIRBUS_BOM
Protection Covering a Junction
Note: There is a similar skill function (see chapter 3.2.6 Create Shielded Junction).
This chapter is going to be updated when the skill function is available.
A) Using pre-defined standard parts
Protections for covering a junction can be selected from the Airbus standard parts catalog.
There are support-like protections with pre-designed geometry that does not depend on the
bundle segments to be covered. The bundle segments have to be routed through the
geometry of the protection.

Planes and points used for

BNS routing

A protection part corresponds to a given BNS size range. The number of entries in the
protection is also fixed.
The protection skeleton is made of points and planes (for BNS tangents) to drive the
bundles segments route through the protection.
Notes: The skeleton elements should be published to make later replacements and/or other
modifications easier.
It is also recommended to use the "Ignore Slack" function in the BNS Route
Definition panel to stiffen BNS within the protection and avoid clashes with the
protection geometry.

Development Phase - CATIA V5 Issue : C

The protection part uses no external references to define its geometry. In parallel, BNS are
routed through the protection and uses protection skeleton elements as external
references. So they are constrained by the protection position.
If the other components routing the BNS are moved, the protection will also have to be
moved in order to give the BNS the most natural shapes.

B) Using the CATIA Protection Function

A protection in CATIA V5 can cover several bundle segments of one branchable. But it is
not possible to cover segments that belong to different branchables. Therefore, if you have
for example two branchables at a junction, you have to define two protections (…-SV001
and …-SV002).

Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

For tape-based protections: if the covered segments of one protection have different

As mentioned before, a second protection has to be defined for the branch of the junction.
One extremity of the second protection
coincides with the junction point. The other
extremity can be defined on the BNS
spline, referencing a BNS definition point,
a support entry point or a connector
connection point. To do so, double click on
the "Start Extremity" or "End Extremity"
label in the 3D.

Note: It is not possible to create two

protections that are pulled on
top of each other and belong to
different branchables.

The length of the second

protection cannot be extended
to the extremity of the first one.
If you want to do so, you have
to modify the extremity
manually (see next paragraph).

3.1.6 Manual Modification of the Protection CATPart

It can be necessary to edit the protection extremity points directly in the protection CATPart.
To edit the protection, activate the protection CATPart.
If you need to access the protection CATPart from the 3D, use the Contextual Menu on the
protection and select "Centre Graph".

Edition of extremity points

In the V5 Tree, double click on an extremity point to edit it. This Point Definition panel provides
more parameters than the Point Definition panel in the Protection function.

Curve of the covered BNS

Do not modify it.

Distance/Ratio definition of the extremity point.

To modify the length, first switch to ratio mode
then back to distance mode, then edit the value.

Reference point for Extremity: BNS definition

point, connector connection point or a support
entry point can still be selected. A Branch-point
can also be selected.
Do check that after changing the reference
point, the extremity point is still on the BNS
curve. Adjust the length value if necessary.

Click on Reverse Direction if you need to invert

the curve orientation.

Definition of a protection in length mode

To define the protection in length mode, one extremity will drive the position of the protection -
let's call it the "master" extremity; the second extremity is defined according to the first
extremity and a length value - let's call it "slave" extremity.
1. First, activate the Protection Part and choose which extremity will become "slave". Double-
click on it in the V5 Tree. The point definition panel pops up.
By default, the "slave"
extremity is referencing the Protection "slave"
BNS extremity of the same extremity
side of the BNS.

3. Then enter a length value.
4. As reference point, select the other extremity - the
"master" extremity.

5. Reverse the curve orientation with the "Reverse
Direction" function or the red arrow in the 3D.
3/6
6. If necessary, modify the length value. Then click
"OK" to validate point modifications.

4
5

Note: An error message may pop up between

selecting the new reference point (step 4)
and reversing curve orientation (step 5).
This would be because of the point not being on
the BNS curve anymore between these two steps.
If this happens, just click "OK" and go on modifying
the curve orientation.
7. For any later modification of the "slave" extremity, double-click on the point in the tree and
modify the point parameters (Length on curve, Reference point…).

3.1.7 Protections on Top of Each Other

For manufacturing needs, it can often be required to place several protections (2 or 3) on top
of each other: overbraiding over Teflon or tape, conduit over overbraiding…
For "Tube"-typed protections, the diameter is part of the protection definition. So the diameter
of the existing protection has to be taken into account when choosing the overlaying tube in
the catalogue.
For "Tape"-typed protections, the diameter is associative to the covered BNS diameter by
default. In case of overlaying protections, the first protection needs to be linked to the bundle
diameter then the second protection needs to be linked to the first protection diameter and so on.

Protection 1
Bundle segment
Protection 2

The methodology is to create the protections independently with the Protection Electrical
function. Then, in the V5 tree, go to the second protection definition and under the "Relations"
node, edit the "MaxDiameter" formula.

By default, this parameter is defined as maximum diameter of covered bundle segments.

Modify it so that it becomes twice the maximum radius of over-covered protections (the
protection parameter corresponding to its external radius is "segment_radius". To insert it,
select the concerned protection Part in the tree and choose the radius parameter).
Warnings:
− These modification steps have to be performed carefully not to break formulas.
− Don't forget to multiply by 2 the maximum radius of protections to define the Outer
protection diameter.

3.1.8 Bonding Straps

Bonding straps are stored in a catalogue. A bonding strap comprises two terminal lugs and a
flexible part, the bundle connecting them. A rib represents the flexible part. These three
components are stored within a single CATPart but in separate bodies. In the example below,
the body "PartBody" represents one terminal lug, the body "TerminalB" the other terminal lug
and the body " Braid" represents the braid.
The last digits of the part number indicate the length of the bonding strap. The part used as
example within this document has a length of 80 mm.

Workflow to insert a bonding strap:

1. First of all the bonding strap is inserted from the catalog:
Activate the right place in the product structure, right click on the part in the catalog and
chose "Instantiate as new component" (an own CATPart for this bonding strap is
created).
Of course, you can alternatively use the "Place from Catalog" feature.
Change the part name of the inserted bonding strap. A bonding strap is a flexible part that
can have different installation positions. Therefore each part needs a different part name.
Use the properties panel to rename the part. The bonding strap shall be named like the
upper assembly plus the extension "-FLX<digit><digit>", e.g. "G92990354002A1-FLX01".
Additionally add the name of the standard (e.g. "ABS0394A80") to the description field.

See AM5012 CATIA V5 Assembly Rules (chapter 3.3.3.2 Standard Parts with Flexible
Elements Inside)

3. For the positioning of Lug2 ("TerminalB") it is in most cases necessary to modify the part
itself. Therefore you have to:
− delete the length constraint,
− switch to the part context and activate the part.

4. If you try to move a component of the part you will be asked if you want to modify the
CATPart. Confirm with "Yes".

5. Move the second lug to the position needed.

Besides the length modification, which will probably be the most commonly used
modification, several other modifications could become necessary.
Like for the length modification, the part itself has to be modified by moving the second lug.
If you try to move a part body, an error message ("Impossible Move. Some elements in the
family are fixed") will appear:

You have to isolate the second plane of the "OpenBody" in order to be able to move the
second lug. Select the plane the "OpenBody" the part, click the right mouse button and

If it is possible to keep the length, you don't need to delete the length constraint.
The following basic modifications and combinations of them are possible:
− Different height of the two lugs
Drawback of this solution:
The length of the braid is getting longer than
it is in reality.

Therefore the lug has to be moved not only

upwards but also in direction of the other
lug. But doing so, it is difficult to maintain
the correct length value.

Remember to delete the length constraint

first.

− "Horizontal rotation" of a lug

Drawback of this solution:
It only works for small angles.
Bigger angles lead to a twist
configuration because the braid is
represented by a rib.

Remember to delete the length

constraint first.

− "Vertical rotation" of a lug

Drawback of this solution:
The length of the braid is modified.

It is difficult to maintain the correct

length value.

Remember to delete the length

constraint first and to isolate the second
plane of the "OpenBody". Select the
plane the "OpenBody" the part, click the

described above, the first lug is
separated from the braid after the
rotation is finished.

3.2 Adjust Harness Shapes

3.2.1 Multi-BNS Passing Through Brackets (Precise Positioning)

A first design has been defined during the definition phase. If several BNS are placed in a
support with only one entry point (i.e. the support is defined by one reference point only), they
are all routed through this entry point.

Note: If several reference points are defined for a support, the BNS will be routed through the
entry point, closest to the location where the user clicks when selecting the support.

Step 1 - Positioning of the bundle segments with the reference bracket

1. Activate the part containing the Branchables to be modified.

2. Select the Branchable (in the tree or its rib in the 3D) and click on the "Branchable Bundle
Segment Definition" function .

3. Open the "Route Definition" of the Branchable.

4a

4b

5. Click on the Positioning Management function "Position":

This opens the Definition panel of the point through which the BNS is routed. By default,
this point is coincident with the support entry point. With the help of the Definition panel, this
point can be moved in the support section plane.

6. The routing point position can be modified in the panel or directly in the 3D.

In the 3D, click on the Support section: the routing point is now following the mouse cursor
and the BNS updates automatically. Click again in the section to the fix the routing point.
This placement method is a bit faster but may not be as precise as the placement from the
panel.

Note: While you move the routing point in the section, its coordinates are shown in the 3D
(green measures) and simultaneously updated in the panel.
In the panel, adjust the routing point coordinates to place the BNS properly.

Note: The Reference point (by default the Support entry point) should not be changed.
7. After the BNS is placed correctly in the support section, click "OK.
8. To propagate the arrangement use "BNS in the support" function.
Note 1: The diameter of a BNS arrangement containing several BNS is in reality smaller
than the outer diameter of an arrangement which spans around all included BNS.
Thus, the BNS that form an arrangement should overlap so that you get a realistic
outer diameter for this arrangement.

3.2.2 Bundle Following Another One (Parallel BNS)

It can be necessary to create a BNS parallel to an already existing BNS. If no more support
elements are available, the only recommended method is to route the new BNS through the
same supports than the one used by the existing BNS.

By default, the new BNS will be routed through the support reference points (entry points) and
may clash with the existing BNS. In this case, you need to move the BNS in each support
section as for a BNS arrangement (for detailed method, see 3.2.1).

Note: Alternative solutions like routing the second BNS on the fly (with offset points) on the
surface of the first BNS, or extruding the spline of the first BNS to build definition points
for the second BNS, are not recommended because of the efforts they require (for
creation and modification) and their lack of precision (especially the first alternative
solution).

3.2.4 BNS Curvature Management on Terminal Block

The curvature of a BNS routed to a connector can
be controlled by means of a back-shell.

But in case of terminal blocks, back-shells are not always available and it can be necessary to
adjust the BNS curvature, using an additional definition point in the BNS definition.

Select in the Junction type combo box ex: "Simple branch: open conduit/open conduit":

Continuity bundle segment

In the Continuity bundle segment combo box, select the name of the continuity bundle
segment. This combo contains same list as Connected entities, and it is visible only if junction
is not "Standard junction" and enabled only for junction creation. By default, correct continuity
segment is retrieved when possible. This is the case when selected main bundle segment is
multibranchable and when one of the connected bundle segment share the same electrical
curve. Otherwise, no default selection is done in combo box (user input is requested).

Automatic/manual angle options

This function is enabled only if one derived bundle segment is defined and differs from
selected bundle segment in connected entities list and if junction type is not "standard
junction".

For the derived bundle segment, it is possible to select an angle for the new routing points
(Manual radio button), else the angle associated with selected bundle segment in connected
entities is calculated automatically list (Auto radio button).

Compute buttons

For the diameter value, it's possible to enter a value in mm or a percentage and the value is
calculated has a percentage of the master bundle diameter. It can also be computed by the
function if the diameters of all the other connected bundle segments are defined, by clicking on
the "Compute" button. The computation is based on the surface conservation rule between the
master bundle and the connected bundles:
The compute button is active when the "BNS Section Surface Conservation" rule can be
applied.
Once the diameter value have been defined, the function can check if the surface conservation
rule is respected or not. Following the result, the "OK" and "Apply" buttons are enabled or
disabled.

3.2.8 Add Repair Length

The repair length is an over-length that must be added to the bundle segment for
maintenance reasons.
When a connector must be repaired within an existing and flying aircraft, the maintenance
team must cut the wires going to it, and reconnect them into the new connector that will be
installed at the same location. Therefore, as the wires are cut, their lengths have changed, and
we must be sure that we have still enough length in order to reconnect them to the new
connector. The aim of the repair length is to take into account this operation early in the
engineering phase.
This function applies an over-length due to repair length on all extremities of bundle segments
of a harness linked to a connector whenever automatic calculation is possible.
− Workflow Repair Length function
1. Activate "Manual repair length" or "Automatic repair length" icons
2. Select the bundle

3.3 Move a Part in the Tree CATIA V5 Structure

It can become necessary to move a part in the tree structure. Moving a part to another product
of the structure causes some efforts. The following workflow has to be performed carefully.
Note: In many cases it will be easier to replace the part that is placed wrongly in the product
structure by a part placed correctly.
Two cases can be distinguished:
a) The part that is moved has no external references (but can be referenced by other
parts).
Examples: Brackets or connectors that are referenced by a BNS.
b) The part that is moved has external references to other parts.
Example: A BNS is moved.
The simpler case a) will be described first by the example of moving a connector. The
connector is referenced by a BNS. It shall be moved to the to the ":::-ELC01" section of the
harness product structure.
1. Activate the upper product (here: "M92990300011A1") containing the part ("ABS0638B12")
to be moved.

Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

2. Move the part to the "destination" product in the tree structure:

2.1. Select and cut the part
2.2. Select the destination product and paste the part

Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

3. If you now perform a local update on the BNS "G92990300011A1-BS001" (which is

the part that references the connector that was moved), warnings may be displayed
because some references cannot be solved any more:

If you open the external references section of the BNS so will also find some broken
references to the connector:

To resolve the references, open the contextual links window of the BNS by using the right
mouse button menu of the BNS: Select the CATPart Instance, open the contextual menu
with the right mouse button and select the menu item "Components → Define Contextual
Links".

The following window appears, listing the reference elements on which the contextual links
need to be solve.

The expected status "To solve" (last column of this window) means the links between the
part and the listed reference elements from the Multi-Branchable (curve and points) have to
be restored.
− Contextual Links Repair:
Multi-select all elements with "To solve" status and press the "Edit" button.

A new window entitled "Define contextual links using the graph" pops up. On the first
node where the link cannot be resolved, open the contextual menu and select
"Replace node":

In the V5 tree, select the connector that was moved in the product structure. This
should heal the links because the missing nodes to complete the path from the part to
its external references are added.
If the nodes are still marked red, the links were not solved. Check that the Product
that was initially containing the part is still activated.

Click "OK" to validate the replacement. In the "Change context of …" panel, all
selected elements now have "Connected" for the "Expected status" field.

Additionally you can check the external references in the respective section of the
BNS. The references that were broken before are now correct again: .
In case b) which was mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, the part that is
moved has external references to other parts.

In the following example, a sleeve is moved between zones.

1. Activate the upper product (here: "G92990300011A1") containing the part
("G92990300011A1") to be moved.

2. Move the part to the "destination" product in the tree structure:

2.1. Select and cut the part. A warning panel may be displayed

Press "OK" to continue.

2.2. Select the destination product and paste the part

The CATPart icon changes to because the contextual links cannot be solved. The
Multi-Branchable reference elements from the covered BNS are sought in the same
CATProduct but cannot be found.
3. To resolve the references, open the contextual links window of the BNS by using the right
mouse button menu of the BNS: Select the CATPart Instance, open the contextual menu

3.4.3 Analyze BNS Curvature

Especially for bend radius analysis, the "Porcupine Curvature Analysis" function of the GSD
workbench can be useful. You can find it in the "Insert → Analysis" menu.

After having executed this analysis, a "Free Form Analysis" section is stored in the structure
tree.

The result of the curvature analysis cannot only be evaluated with the geometry (see above),
but there is also a diagram feature:

3.4.4 Analyze Electrical Connections

An important pre-condition for follow-up processes of electrical 3D installation like:
− flattening or
− electrical wire routing
is that the electrical connectivity of all bundles of a harness is assured. To analyze the
electrical connections a search can be defined:

If you select a bundle segment in the list and click on the "Select" function, the
corresponding bundle segment will be highlighted in the 3D and in the V5 tree.
Note: This query can also be stored (with "Add to favourites…" option) in order to re-
execute it easily later (in the "Favorites" tab of the window).
4. If a bundle segment in listed in this search results, it means that this bundle segment is not
connected.
Use the "Link" button in the "Electrical Harness Assembly" workbench to connect the
bundle segments correctly. Do not get confused by the error message that may appear
("Two successive points are geometrical identical"). Check the link by running the query
again afterwards. The query should retrieve no results.

3.4.5 Analyze Part Dependencies

Analyzing part dependencies is possible with the "Related Objects" button in the
"Electrical Harness Assembly" workbench. You can navigate through the objects connected to
the selected object. It is possible to switch between "Tree" mode which shows the part
structure of the related objects and the "3D" mode which shows the geometry of the parts
listed in the tree mode window.
The related objects command identifies the parent, any children or connected objects and the
relationships between objects.

With the use of Multi-Branchable you are not certain about continuity between branches. This
analysis confirms only connection between Parts. In the diagram only one of the two branches
is connected. However the analysis confirms connection between the two Parts without
information for the unconnected branch.

3.4.6 Analyze Bend Radius Troubles

Troubleshooting

WRONG

WRONG

If an exclamation mark is shown in the icon

of a bundle segment in the structure tree, it
will usually help to reduce the bend radius
(or both: bend radius and diameter) in the
bundle segment definition.

© AIRBUS S.A.S. 2007. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY DOCUMENT.

User_Manual_FM0400730_V1.2 Printed Copies are not controlled. Confirm this is the latest issue available through the Portal. Page 78 of 107
Electrical Harness Modelling for AM5011.3
Development Phase - CATIA V5 Issue : C

The same approach may be useful in case

of a "twist configuration". Try to raise the
bend radius again step by step after the
bundle segment has been designed. To
open the bundle segment definition click the
right mouse button on the bundle segment
part, then select the menu items "Electrical"
and "Bundle Segment".

General recommendations for solving BNS definition problems:

− Reduce the bend radius ratio
− Break the bundle down into several parts and reduce the bend radius ratio for the
more complex zone only
− Apply any modification immediately in order to determine which added constraint
causes the problem
− Check all route points
− Remove tangencies
− Remove points

3.4.7 Harness Checker

Harness check of the five functions described above have been added to the Harness
checker.
A special kind of check is done for each function (repair length, driploop, etc.), using the same
interface.
Implementation
The user selects the function to check and runs the Harness Checker. The tool executes then
a complete check of the function modified.
Input and user actions

Select the type of check

Existing Harness check user interface is updated in order to define which type of skill functions
will be checked (all by default). In addition, columns show the severity level for each:
The interface is launched from the Electrical Skill Functions toolbar:

The following window is displayed:

A geometrical bundle must be selected (in the 3D view or in the specification tree) in order to
use this function; else the checkboxes and the Edit button stay disabled.
One or more function checks can be selected in the "Checks to perform" list.
Then click on the button "Check": the "Result" part is completed with all the warning and error
messages found for each function checked.
The result messages can be sorted by bundle segment, by function (column "Type"), by status
or by severity.
Message of severity 1 or 2 leads to OK status.
Message of severity 3 or 4 leads to KO status.
If the user clicks on a line in the "Result" part:
− the corresponding geometrical element is highlighted in the 3D view,
− a more detailed message about the error or the warning is displayed in the "Report"
field.
If the status of a check message is KO, the user can select the corresponding line in the
"Result" part and then click on the "Edit button": the corresponding function panel is displayed.
After having done modifications or having aborted from the function panel, it is closed and the
Harness Checker window is re-opened. The results are updated with the new input data.
The CANCEL button aborts all the modifications and closes the window.

Junction checks
An error message (KO status in the window) is displayed if:
− the surface conservation rule for all the junctions is not respected.

DripLoop checks
− The driploop max length is checked : DripLoopMaxLength = 300 mm.
− The The maximum distance between the end element reference point and the first
support element encountered by the bundle should not exceed DistHMax in a
horizontal plane (300 mm for NAS 1599 type connectors, boxes 22 and 24 only) and
DistVMax a vertical plane.
Default values:
DistHMax = 200 mm
DistVMax = 100 mm

− Projected in a horizontal plane, the first support element must be positioned within a
range of ± 45° in relation to the vertical plane containing the end element direction
axis:

− When projected onto a horizontal plane, the orientation of the first support element
must be within a range of ± 90° in relation to the vertical plane parallel to the vertical
plane containing the direction axis of the end element passing through point B.

Repair Length checks

Only bundle segments extremities on which the driploop function is not applied are checked.
An error message (KO status in the window) is displayed if:
− harness has a global slack different from 0,
− repair length is defined but should not (e.g. Drip loop should apply, electrical point too
far from connector),
− repair length is not defined but should be,
− relative repair length (total repair length x%) is greater than the local slack,
− sum of repair length percentage on 3 last electrical points is not 100,
− calculated repair lengths differ strictly from the applied repair length.
A warning message (OK status in the window) is displayed if:
− routes are not defined for the bundle segment,
− routes are defined for the bundle segment but no calculation is possible.

Sagging/swelling checks
An error message (KO status in the window) is displayed if:
− sagging is applicable, Ld < 200 mm, local slack > 0 mm,
− sagging is applicable, Ld ≥ 200 mm, local slack <> calculated over-length ± Epsilon.
A warning message (OK status in the window) is displayed if sagging is not applicable, no
repair length applies, no drip loop exists and local slack > 0 mm.

Double junction checks

An error message (KO status in the window) is displayed if the following rule is not respected:
D12 = D122 + D132
D22 = D122 + D232
D32 = D132 + D232

3.4.8 ElecCleaner/ChangeColors and Layer

In order to release clean data in PRIMES for A400M with the correct naming, layers and
colors, users able to use a command working on a multi-selection of Electrical parts to check,
clean and change graphic attributes on harnesses.
Two functions have been developed in VBmacro:
− ElecCleaner.CATScript
− ChangeColorAndLayer.CATScript

Constraints
− The ElecCleaner.CATScript are respecting the following constraints:
• Check the PartNumbers and the filenames consistency
• GBN CATProduct part number must begin by M (uppercase), Has to have
14 characters long. The 13th letter has to be a "A" (ex: M87S11111000A0)
• CATParts PartNumber must have the same PartNumber than the GBN
catproduct plus:
− BS [000] for bundle segment (ex: M87S11111000A0-BS000) ([000] is a
range from 000 to 999)
− SV [000] for sleeve
− MK [000] for marker
• Components inside GBN must have the same PartNumber than the GBN
catproduct plus:
− [AAA][00] for standard node (where [AAA] is a 3 letters words, ex
M87S11111000A0-STD00, M87S11111000A0-DUM00)
− ELC [00] for electrical node
• The Instance Name of Component must not have the GBN PartNumber inside:
ex M87S11111000A0-ELC01.1 by default to be renamed to "ELC01"

− The ChangeColorAndLayer.CATScript are respecting the following constraints:

• For each part in the selection the system changes the layer & the color for:
− PartBody, Body, RIB
− Mechanical Body (Body.x not OpenBodies)
− Each Mechanical Feature inside the mechanical Body (ex: Rib inside the
BNS)

Limitations
− The ElecCleaner.CATScript limitations are:
• selection of a GBN (Geometrical Bundle) CATProduct,
• system informs users and localizes wrong informations only,
• no automatic rename of the Part numbers or Instance name,
• system puts in No Show all the following elements for each -BS -SV -MK CATpart
under GBN product:
− ElecRouteBody

− Open_body (except double junction Open_body)

− Axis system
− External References
• system automatically delete all unresolved publications.

− The ChangeColorAndLayer.CATScript limitations are:

• multi-selection of CATPart (ex: -BS -MK -SV parts),
• the command will ask for an element (ex: rib of a BNS) in order to have a
reference element for the layer and the color.

3.5 Harness Shape Evolution During Component Motion

This kind of analysis is used to verify BNS shape evolution during movement mechanisms.
Example: Instrument removable from forward face or door opening.
All components must be connected (assembly constraints) and the last BNS (between last
bracket and connector) must be created with "length" mode.

Remark: For this topic, the components connected to the equipment must be positioned on
the correct level in the assembly in order to place a mechanical constraint between
the parts (connectors and equipment). This constraint can be easily updated during
each step of motion so that you obtain the resulting harness shape. Flexible
assembly notion can also be used.

3.6 Copy Harness

The target of this function is to duplicate a Geometrical Bundle and all dependant parts
(Bundle Segments, Protections, Markers) having the same root PartNumber.
In more of 3D geometrical items the macro automatically replaces involved data in the
specification tree as shown the following example.

Constraints
The following methods are respecting the following constraints:
− only the PartNumbers and the filenames are modified,
− instance names are kept to facilitate the management of contextual links,
− internal UUIDs are kept to ease the usage by the Manufacturing team of the
"Synchronization" command of the EHF workbench,
− electrical connections within the sub-assembly are kept,

− external and Contextual links are kept,

− external ASCII files such as M87S19700000A1-PROPT.xml are taken into account,
− only Airbus S1 or ST licenses package are required.

Limitations
− No batch solution proposed.
− For this method the copied source data must be in Read access. The -EWP must be
in write Access in order to keep the modification.
− Workflow Copy Haness macro
1 Open the Design Tree assembly (-EWP) in which the sub-harness has been designed, or
open directly the sub-harness document if all links are self-contained in this document.
2 Select the sub-assembly to be renamed and then select the macro

Appendix 1. ...........

A.1 Bundle Types

The description of bundle types is subject to AM5011.2.
See AM5011.2 Electrical Installation Modeling for Definition Phase - CATIA V5
But with CATIA V5 R12 a new bundle segment type, the multi-branchable bundle segment has
been introduced. Since module 2 of this AM was based on CATIA V5 R11, the multi-
branchable was not mentioned in that module. Therefore, all bundle types available with R12
are described here again.
In the next paragraphs, the definition, properties and main differences between the 2 bundle
document types are summarized:
− Bundle Segment,
− Multi-Branchable Bundle Segment.

A.1.1 Bundle Segment

The bundle segment (BNS) is a single bundle in a CATPart. It is specified by a single set of
parameters (diameter, minimum bend radius, slack…) and is driven by one electrical curve.

A.1.2 Multi-Branchable Bundle Segment

Starting with CATIA V5 R12, the new multi-branchable bundle segment enables to create
several branchable bundle segments in one CATPart. Each Branchable can still be made of
several BNS.

Branchable

Branchable

Each branchable of the multi-branchable is managed independently: each branchable has its
own electrical curve, specified by independent parameters. As a result, a complete harness
can be stored in one CATPart file.
A given branchable is still defined by BNS-specific parameters (diameter, colour…) and
common parameters (slack, minimum bend…). As with branchable BNS, all BNS of a
branchable are built on a single electrical curve.

A.2 Multi-Branchable: Creation, Modification, Delete

The handling of Multi-Branchables is very similar to the handling of Bundle Segments and
Branchables, except that all bundle segments can now be stored in the same CATPart.
The following paragraph summarizes the main scenarios for Multi-Branchables.

A.2.1 Creation of a Multi-Branchable

Activate the GBN in which the Multi-Branchable has to be created.

Select the "Multi-Branchable" icon (in Electrical Harness Assembly workbench). A new
CATPart is created under the GBN for the Multi-Branchable and the Branchable Definition
panel of "Branchable 1" automatically pops up:

Note: When clicking "Cancel" in the Branchable Definition panel, you only leave the edition of
the Branchable and the Branchable is kept empty.
The "Cancel" doesn't concern the creation of the Multi-Branchable CATPart itself and therefore
does not remove the CATPart from the tree. If you want cancel the creation of the Multi-
Branchable CATPart, use the "Undo" function.
Then, in the Definition panel, the edition of the Branchable route and parameters (diameter,
minimum bend radius, slack…) is exactly the same as with previous CATIA releases.
When you working with "Build mode in slack mode the value should be upper to 0% (0.18 or
0.2) excepted if you use Sagging/Swelling and Repair length Skill Function on the Bendable.
You can for some specific cases store with Build mode in Length mode.
For the manufacturing you have to store after applied skill functions a model with build mode in
length mode or if in slack mode with a value upper to 0% (0,1 mini).

A.2.2 Creation of a New Branchable within an Existing Multi-Branchable

Activate the Multi-Branchable CATPart in which you want to create a new Branchable.

Note: If the Multi-Branchable has only one Branchable, the Definition panel of this Branchable
will automatically pop up when the Multi-Branchable CATPart is activated. In this case,
click "Cancel" to close it.
Select the Multi-Branchable CATPart and click on the "Multi-Branchable" icon .

A new Branchable is added to the Multi-Branchable and its Definition panel pops up.

Note: If you click "Cancel", the creation will be aborted and "Branchable 2" removed from the
Tree.

A.2.3 Modification of a Branchable within a Multi-Branchable

Activate the Multi-Branchable Part containing the Branchable to be modified.

Select the Branchable (in the Tree or its rib in the 3D)
In the tree: Or in the 3D:

Then click on the "Branchable Bundle Segment Definition" icon . The Definition panel of
the selected Branchable pops up and you can perform the modifications.

A.2.4 Delete a Branchable within a Multi-Branchable

Activate the Multi-Branchable Instance containing the Branchable to be deleted.

Select the Branchable to be deleted in the tree. Delete it from the contextual menu or use the
"Del" key of the keyboard.
Warning: Do not delete the Branchable from the 3D because only the Branchable geometry
would be deleted, i.e. the Rib. But the Branchable itself would not be deleted.

A.2.5 Division Management

In a user area:
One Multi-Branchable CATPart must correspond to one main ROUTE. It is forbidden to create
a Multi-branchable CATPart with bundle segments representing different main ROUTEs (1M,
1S, 2S, etc.).
One Multi-Branchable part must contain only continuous bundle segments.
− See in the picture the different colours (1 per SubHarness).

Remark: A400M = ATA 87; Others = ATA 92.

A.2.6 Manage Bundle Diameter

Two Possibilities:

• Activated the CATPart • Double click on the Bundle Segment

• Click on the Bundle Segment • A windows appears
• Click on Bundle Definition • Modify the Ø value
• Modify the Ø value

A.2.7 Distance & Band Analysis

To check the respect of the SIDP for the distance between Harness and environment a fast
method is to use the function Distance & Band Analysis. For this choose option "selection
against all" and select the bundle to analysis.

With Multi-Branchable this analysis depends on creation. So be careful with the result.

A.2.8 Quality Check List

Ensuring the quality of the V5 CAD data is necessary in order for the data to be used for data
exchange and within the internal process chain.
This also enables data to be saved and viewed at the same standard and allows more efficient
concurrent working
Note: This Quality Check list is an example. Refer to Official document.
