INTRODUCTION
The impact of online schooling on pupils’ academic achievement is a contentious issue that
frequently divides opinion. “Online school” means that all courses, including teacher-to-student
and student-to-student interaction, are administered via the internet, according to
NorthStar Academy. ‘Ballotpedia’ states that academic performance is “the measurement of
student achievement across several academic subjects.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
students were obliged to attend online school. Although reputable news agencies such as;
Edweek, ScienceDirect, CNBC, and others have produced comprehensive articles on the subject,
it is unclear whether these findings apply to the researchers’ school. This topic was deemed
appropriate for this study in attempt to:
1. Compare the results for the Grade Ten (10) students before and after the pandemic,
2. Compare which gender in this level grasped online school better,
3. Compare the disparities.

Following the completion of this study, the data gathered will be utilized to analyze the impacts
of online school on students and aid in the development of recommendations. The researchers
will use the report cards for Grade Ten (10) pupils to accomplish this study since they are
credible, contemporary, and readily available.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
The researchers’ method of investigation is a survey with the use of questionnaires via Google
Forms. A questionnaire can be described as a research instrument that is made up of a series of
questions which are intended to collect relative data from respondents which can then be used by
for a variety of purposes. There are the reasons why the researchers chose to use this method of
investigation:
Advantages of a Questionnaire:
• The time taken to fill up the questionnaire is relatively sort,
• Data collection and analyzation can be achieved easily and quickly,
• The scalability to reach a large audience within a short time.

Disadvantages of a Questionnaire:
• Accessibility issues,
• Lack of honesty,
• Questionnaire fatigue as some persons may complain of too many questions.

We are fifth form students at The Bishops' High School who are currently studying Mathematics.
This investigation is a requirement for the CSEC Mathematics School Based Assessment (S.B.A)
and is to be answered by the current fifth formers/ Class of 2022. The main objective is to gather
information which is accurate and genuine and to determine the effects of online school on the
student's academic performance. The researchers are asking for your co-operation in successfully

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Online Schooling was the alternative used to resume the education system in all countries during
the COVID-19 pandemic. Though this method of learning method was known to some, others
found it challenging, hence what the following will prove.
As seen in figure 5, students in Grade 10 excelled at English Language compared to that of
Grade 9. This can be seen as Grade 10 did better from 100% to 60%. Nine (9) students got 100-
90% in Grade 10 as compared to the six (6) students that achieved that Grade in 9. Similarly,
twenty (20) students attained 89-80% in Grade 10 as compared to the seventeen (17) students
who got 89-80% in Grade 9.
Moving on, it could be concluded that students did better in English Literature in Grade 9 than
they did in Grade 10. This is evident in figure 6 as thirty-one (31) students acquired between 79-
100% in Grade 9 as compared to the thirty (30) that got between 79-100% in Grade 10.
In Grade 10, seven (7) students obtained below the 60-percentile range as compared to the three
(3) students in Grade 9 for Mathematics. However, three (3) students in Grade 10 attained
percentages between the 90-100 percentile range, while only two (2) students attained that
average for Grade 9.
Referencing Geography, six (6) students of Grade 10 accomplished between the ranges of 90-
100%, while only three (3) students of Grade 9 got between the ranges of 90-100%. Contrary
only two (2) students got below the 60-percentile range for both Grades 9 and 10. Additionally,
twelve (12) and seventeen (17) students from Grade 10 and Grade 9 respectively got between 70-
79%.
For Social Studies, the 70-79 percentile range boasted for most students as twelve (12) students
in Grade 10 attained this percent and eleven (11) students in Grade 9. Only six (6) students of
Grade 10 achieved 90-100% and four (4) students of Grade 9.
Conclusively, only one (1) student in Grade 10 attained an overall average of 90-100% as no
student attained that percent while in Grade 9. Contrastingly, three (3) students in Grade 10
failed to attain an overall average of above 60% and two (2) students in Grade 9 failed to do the
same.
The difference between online schooling and face to face is detrimental and many failed to grasp
the transition in certain subjects. The research revealed that English Language is the only subject
that maintained a consistent pass rate above 70% while subjects like English Literature,
Geography and Social Studies had significant fluctuations. Mathematics on the other hand,
showed a drastic shift for persons who achieved results higher than 70%. To study the reasons
for these shifts figure 12 was used and it disclosed that 61% of students had information readily
accessible to pass their respective subjects and 45% of students believed the online courses were
exemplary. Now knowing that 35% of students showed neutrality while rating the online
schooling, it goes to show that improvements have to be made.

DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
The researchers’ study was to find out “The effects of online school on student’s academic
performance in Grade 10.” To gather information, questionnaires were sent to the students for
them to use their report cards to answer the questions. A successful turnout resulted in eighty
(80) returned questionnaires with forty (40) being male and female respectively. From the data,
the findings were converted into percentages and graphs for easier interpretation and the goals
prior to this journey were fulfilled.
The following were found:

• After transitioning back to face-to-face classes, students failed to perform as well as they
did online. Most subjects including those of Mathematics and English Literature recorded
a decrease in high performers while English Language was able to maintain a constant
grading.
• When comparing the genders and who grasped the transitions better, the researchers
found that females outshone the males as they performed excellent thought out online and
face to face. For further information, when identify this objective, the researchers became
aware of the fact that females occupy most spots within the top ten (10) of the classes
investigated.
• From the Likert scale, it can be determined that even though information and electronic
devices were accessible, online school was difficult to handle. A total of 35% of
responders remained neutral or rated four (4) when asked to rate their satisfaction with
the online course and this goes to show that while the grades were applaudable, more
than 20% had difficult experiences.

CONCLUSION
Technology isn't always reliable, and it can cause severe class disruptions. Online learning
necessitates the presence of high-speed internet at the student's residence, which can be
problematic if not available. A student's WIFI may go down abruptly, preventing them from
turning in an assignment on time or preventing them from attending class and missing teaching.
This would have a significant and detrimental impact on the education and grades of the student.
Furthermore, students who attend an online school have a harder time learning topics because
there are more distractions that divert their attention away from their studies. When pupils are
not in a school atmosphere with other students and teachers, they are more likely to become
distant, causing them to be less attentive which is evident from this research as the grades
decreased when students returned to face-to-face classes.
