This bill proposes legalizing euthanasia in order to preserve the quality of life for those suffering from terminal illnesses or who are brain dead. It argues that euthanasia is a humane option that most physicians support for terminally ill patients. Legalizing euthanasia would also decrease unsafe home treatments and suicides. The bill defines euthanasia and the legalization process, requiring medical approval on a case-by-case basis. It would take effect in 2026 and be regulated by the Department of Health and Human Services.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE CONGRESS HERE ASSEMBLED THAT:
1 SECTION 1. Legalizing euthanasia is a necessity to preserve the quality 2 of life for those who are suffering, brain dead, affected by a terminal 3 illness, or otherwise. Euthanasia is a humane and safe choice for many 4 individuals especially since the majority of physicians believe it should be 5 provided for those who are terminally ill. Additionally legalizing euthanasia 6 will decrease the amount of unsafe home treatments or suicides. The 7 United States will adopt the same requirements as Canada regarding 8 euthanasia. 9 10 SECTION 2. Euthanasia will be defined as the physician-assisted painless 11 killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease, an 12 irreversible coma, or as Canadian regulations state. 13 14 Legalization will be defined as the action of making something illegal, legal, 15 in this case euthanasia; but will still require medical approval and 16 prescription on a case-by-case basis. Legalization does not mean the 17 process will be easy but rather makes euthanasia an option. 18 SECTION 3. The United States Department of Health and Human 19 Services will oversee enforcement and regulation. 20 21 SECTION 4. This legislation will take effect in FY 2026. All laws in conflict 22 with this legislation are hereby declared null and void. 23 24 25 Introduced for Congressional Debate by Palisade High School.
