STUDY GUIDE #2

Read and write about the ff:

1. Hildegard Peplau developed the concept of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship.

a. Discuss the role of the nurse in the therapeutic relationship as defined by Hildegard Peplau.
- The idea that the nurse-patient interaction is a therapeutic collaboration lies at the core of Peplau's
theory. Effective nursing care, in her opinion, is establishing a setting where patients feel protected,
heard, and understood in addition to giving them prescriptions and treatments. Within the nurse-client
relationship, the nurse adopts one or more of six helping roles when providing care: stranger, resource
person, teacher, leader, surrogate, and counselor.

2. Sigmund Freud believed that human personality functioned at three levels of awareness.
a. Discuss examples of ego defense mechanisms, which derive predominantly from the
unconscious level.
- For instance, repression which Freud considered to be the most fundamental form of ego defense—
involves pushing uncomfortable ideas and emotions into the unconscious and erasing them from
conscious awareness. Repression is demonstrated when you read about someone who "blocked out"
distressing memories of being abused as a child. This is known as the conversion defensive
mechanism. For instance, a person may not admit to having anxiety yet nonetheless have persistent
gastrointestinal issues (after all other possible causes have been considered).

3. A mental health nurse is conducting a group therapy session with a client diagnosed with depression.
a. Discuss therapeutic results of group therapy.
- The goals of group therapy include reducing symptoms including depressive symptoms and low
motivation in addition to enhancing social functioning, better adaptability, and enhanced interpersonal
relationships.
