QUESTION 1

The car park and ground floor of a nearby buildings at Kuala Selangor are connected by a
continuous two-span reinforced concrete staircase shown in FIGURE Q1. The lower and upper
ends of the structure are simply supported on a strip of footing, while on the top of a reinforced
concrete wall, respectively. The beam which forms the middle support is cast monolithically with
the landing and is supported by a pair of columns. The staircase width is 2500 mm (2.5m), with
going and riser of 250 mm and 150 mm, respectively. The overall waist thickness of the flight
and landing is 175 mm. Other dimensional properties of the staircase are given in the figure.
Using the data given below, design the reinforcement required in the staircase and show in a neat
sketch your proposed arrangement of steel reinforcement for the whole structure. Also check its
suitability for shear, deflection, and cracking.

Characteristic variable action = 5.0 kN/m2

Characteristics permanent action from finishes, handrail, etc. = 1.0 kN/m2
Characteristics strength of concrete = 30 N/mm2
Characteristics strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover = 25 mm

QUESTION 2

Three reinforced concrete columns sized 400 x 400 mm placed 3.0 meter apart, arranged in a
straight line as shown in Figure Q2. Both outer columns sustaining an ultimate axial load of 1400
kN each, whereas the internal column sustaining an ultimate axial load of 1850 kN. Base on the
bearing capacity of the soil as 175kN/m2, preliminary design found that combined footing is the
appropriate option to sustain the three columns. Evaluate the adequacy of a 2.4 x 8.5 x 0.6 meter
combined footing to sustain the loads from the three columns. Design and sketch all reinforcement
needed. Checking for shear is required but cracking check can be omitted.

Use fck = 30 N/mm2, fyk = 500 N/mm2 and concrete cover 50 mm. Use a factor of 1.4 to change
the design load to service load (where applicable).
